Ponting broke the hearts of millions of Indian cricket supporters with a brilliant 140 not out in the World Cup final in Johannesburg earlier this year.
Arguably the greatest one-day innings ever played, it paved the way to a 125-run victory and resulted in Ponting lifting the trophy only a year after being handed the one-day captaincy.
In Test cricket, however, he has yet to take over the reins from Steve Waugh, enabling him to concentrate on further improving a batting average of over 52 without distraction.
Although sometimes vulnerable early in his innings, Ponting is hard to dislodge once established and already has more than 5,000 Test runs to his credit.
