Hayden has transformed himself from a player fighting for his place to the pre-eminent opening batsman in world cricket in less than three years.
His rise to the top was confirmed in October when he set a new Test record with an innings of 380 against Zimbabwe at Perth.
It was on Australia's 2001 tour to India that Hayden, who previously averaged only 24 in Tests, served notice of a special talent when he hit 569 runs in three matches.
Although less epectacular in the Ashes series in England which followed, he still finished 2001 with 1,391 runs - the most ever scored by an Australian in a calendar year.
