Men's ice hockey - Czech Republic 1-0 Denmark

Czech Republic capitalise on their powerplay to take the lead!

Roman Cervenka, on the right, plays the puck back to Filip Hronek, who passes it on to Martin Necas on the left. He lets rip from distance and beats Frederik Andersen's left glove, shooting high with his one-timer!

    Great strike!

Oh there could have been a goal at either end!

Denmark pick up a loose puck but have their shot cut out. Czech Republic immediately go up the other end and Ondrej Palat is picked out in space in the back post.

However, Frederik Andersen dives across his line to deny the one-timer and after a bit of a scramble the puck is diverted away.

Unfortunately for Denmark, in the aftermath, Lars Elleris pinged for a high stick. Czech Republic go on the powerplay.

Czech Republic qualified for the Olympics as one of the top eight teams in the IIHF rankings (2023) but only won one game to finish third in Group A. They beat France 6-3 but lost to Canada (5-0) and Switzerland (4-3 in overtime).

Czech Republic were Olympic champions in 1998 but haven’t won a medal since 2006 (bronze) and only finished ninth in Beijing four years ago. They are seven-time world champions, most recently in 2024, and finished sixth in 2025.

With a squad boasting no fewer than 11 NHL-contracted players, they should expect to beat Denmark, who had to come through qualifying to reach Milan.

Denmark finished third in Group C, losing to Germany (3-1) and USA (6-3) before beating Latvia 4-2 on Sunday.

Denmark competed in Olympic men’s ice hockey for the first time in 2022, finishing seventh, but recently came a surprise fourth at the 2025 World Championships, losing to their co-hosts Sweden in the bronze medal match.

How it workspublished at 16:28 GMT 17 February

Men's ice hockey - Czech Republic 0-0 Denmark

Czech Republic and Denmark will both be hoping to break the deadlock as we close in on the start of the second period of this playoff match. But how does ice hockey work at the Olympics?

Twelve teams are competing in the men’s ice hockey.

During the preliminary round, they were split into three groups of four and played a single round-robin to determine the rankings for the knockout stages.

The top four teams (Canada, USA, Slovakia, and Finland) advanced straight through to the quarter-finals, with the other eight teams entering the qualification playoff (5 v 12, 6 v 11 etc.).

The teams are reseeded ahead of the semi-finals (20 February), with the bronze medal match on 21 February and the gold medal match on 22 February.

Finland are the defending Olympic champions. They beat the Russian Olympic Committee in the final, with Slovakia finishing third. USA are the reigning world champions, finishing ahead of Switzerland and Sweden.

It has almost, almost, stopped snowing in Livigno.

We've just had confirmation through that the women's snowboard slopestyle final, which was due to take place this afternoon but was postponed due to the terrible weather, will now take place back-to-back with the men's tomorrow.

The men's final will get under way at 11:20 CET (10:20 GMT).

The women's final will follow at 14:30 CET (13:30 GMT).

A reminder that no British athletes will be competing in these finals after missing out in qualifiers.

    I've surveyed the desk...

Thomas says not skiing (he broke his leg) before eventually settling on skeleton or snowboarding.

Maisie would like to be good at ice skating (the dancing, not the racing).

Phil, a self-described "opposite of an adrenaline junkie", opts for curling or biathlon.

It's ice hockey for me, or failing that anything of the snowboard slalom racing persuasion.

Denmark are on the penalty kill but they're the livelier of the two sides.

Oscar Moelgaard upends a Czech skater, who was dawdling on the puck around the halfway line, and gets a shot away.

Scrappy is the word to sum up this first period. Not many clear-cut chances for either team.

Czech Republic have out-shot Denmark 8-4 but it remains 0-0 in Milan.

That's the first real save either netminder has had to make for some time, Denmark's Frederik Andersen, getting down into the butterfly position to deny Czech Republic an opener.

(Butterfly - knees down, flare your legs to the side, almost ending up like the yellow brick in Tetris).

There's a little over five minutes to go in the first period.
