That first set is a huge surprise, because nobody on tour can match Marta Kostyuk's record on clay this season.

The 23-year-old is on a 17-match winning streak on the surface, with 16 successive wins at Tour events and one in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers.

She is the only player undefeated so far this season on clay at WTA level, and has beaten Mirra Andreeva twice this year - including in the Madrid final last month.

The first Ukrainian to reach the women's singles semi-finals at Roland Garros in the Open Era, she is seeking to become the first Ukrainian woman to reach a major singles final.

    David Law

Marta Kostyuk is not controlling the ball anywhere near as well as Mirra Andreeva.

At the moment, Andreeva is playing on autopilot, and it is all going well.

  6. Game and first set - Andreevapublished at 14:42 BST 4 June

    Kostyuk 1-6 0-0 Andreeva*

Marta Kostyuk is relieved to see Mirra Andreeva miss on break point, but the Ukrainian returns the favour to give her opponent another opportunity.

With little over 30 minutes on the clock, Kostyuk nets to concede the first set. This is getting away from the 15th seed remarkably quickly here and she needs to change things if she's going to have any hope of turning this around...

It feels like Marta Kostyuk has got more of the support from the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd.

That might be partly because she is struggling to stop this opening set running away from her, but also because the Paris fans have largely been sympathetic to Ukrainian players.

There was warm, elongated applause here when Kostyuk dedicated her quarter-final win over Elina Svitolina to her nation. Several Ukrainian flags are visible today - including among Kostyuk's guests.

Andreeva promised to play the opponent not the occasion and the Russian teenager is doing a good job of that so far.

    *Kostyuk 0-4 Andreeva

    Mark Woodforde
17-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra 2 and BBC Sounds

Marta Kostyuk might be thinking; 'OK, this set is not looking great.'

A good percentage of first serves from Mirra Andreeva, and it seems like on the first two games she has served that she hasn't been looking for those corners.

Impressive stuff, this, from Mirra Andreeva.

The Russian teenager drives a powerful forehand deep into the court and Marta Kostyuk can't get her racquet behind it.

Another game on the board. Andreeva is absolutely flying through this first set.

    Kostyuk 0-3 Andreeva*

A superb serve from Mirra Andreeva on an important fourth point, catching the line to restore parity with a timely ace at 30-30.

But that's an excellent shot from Marta Kostyuk, switching things up with a clever drop shot from just inside the baseline to reach deuce.

Can the Ukrainian build on that now?

Great Britain's Henry Patten and Finland's Harri Heliovaara have secured their place in the men's doubles final.

The pair continued their bid for a third Grand Slam title together by defeating French duo Quentin Halys and Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 6-4.

Having won Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 2025 and the Australian Open in 2025, they will seek a first French Open triumph when they face either top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos or Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in this weekend's final.

  19. 'Maturity from Andreeva'published at 14:20 BST 4 June

    Kostyuk 0-3 Andreeva*

    Mark Woodforde

That's a huge game. In these big matches, if you come out and break serve in that first game and if you have some nerves it evaporates them even more. This is the maturity of Mirra Andreeva.

Andreeva with a really nice start. If she can consolidate the double break, then you can virtually say that set is hers.

  20. Andreeva breaks for second timepublished at 14:19 BST 4 June

    Kostyuk 0-3 Andreeva*

Mirra Andreeva has certainly settled quicker here.

That is very evident as she hammers a winner into the corner, as she sets up a couple more break points.

Marta Kostyuk does well to see off the first with a big first serve - but Andreeva takes the second to take control of the opening set.
