  1. Ukraine-Russia tension hangs over semi-finalpublished at 14:18 BST

The first of the two women's semi-finals sees Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk face Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva.

After Kostyuk came through an historic first all-Ukrainian major quarter-final against Elina Svitolina and dedicated the match to her homeland, Russia's invasion of Ukraine provides an unavoidable backdrop to this contest.

Kostyuk has regularly denounced the war since Russia's invasion began in February 2022, and criticised athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus who have failed to do so.

"The biggest thing I can do is sit here and talk about [the war] so more people can find out about it and don't get used to this terrible life," Kostyuk said.

Andreeva has consistently attempted to deflect any discussion about the war and did the same again before playing Kostyuk.

"It doesn't matter who I play. I really try to play against the ball that is coming at me," said Andreeva.

  2. Andreeva saves three break points to holdpublished at 14:16 BST

    *Kostyuk 0-2 Andreeva

Marta Kostyuk looks all set for an immediate response as Mirra Andreeva misses to hand over three break back points.

It's been an untidy start by both players, but Kostyuk can't capitalise on the opportunity.

An excellent serve down the middle from Andreeva sees the Russian hold with a fifth straight point.

The wind will play a factor. Both women have to be able to absorb the issues today.

It has been a brilliant run and Marta Kostyuk is undefeated on clay this season.

I think Mirra Andreeva's serve tees up a lot.

It's the perfect start for Mirra Andreeva.

Marta Kostyuk produces two double faults in the opening game to gift her opponent the early advantage. The conditions, or just some early nerves?

It is another windy day in Paris, but the roof is open as we have predominantly blue skies above.

So, the world number one is OUT.

It has been quite the tournament, with shocks and surprises arriving almost daily over the past two weeks at Roland Garros.

This is the first Grand Slam event without a former Grand Slam champion in both the men's and women's semi-finals since 1977.

All four women’s singles semi-finalists are born in the 2000s for the first time at a Grand Slam event.

There's no two ways about it, this is a massive opportunity for one of them to get their hands on one of the sport's most coveted trophies.

There was another almighty shock at the French Open on Wednesday, as women's world number one and heavy title favourite Aryna Sabalenka crashed out after she unravelled in a crushing quarter-final defeat by Diana Shnaider.

Sabalenka led 6-3 4-1 before an astonishing momentum shift and extraordinary comeback from Shnaider.

The Russian 25th seed, playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, won 12 of the final 13 games to win 3-6 7-5 6-0.

That came after Polish qualifier extended her dream run on her French Open debut by beating 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.

Chwalinska had only ever won two tour-level matches on clay before beginning her bid to qualify for this year's French Open - but now she is two wins away from emulating Britain's Emma Raducanu as only the second qualifier in the Open era to win a major title.
