Alexander Zverev perhaps got ahead of himself and started thinking that the work had been done there.

He played a dreadful game on his serve. He has to regain his focus rapidly now.

Jacob Fearnley, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about how he turned the match around in his five-set victory over Alex Michelsen: "I just had to dig deep, I knew I was close and I managed to find some level in those last three sets and I'm really happy with the way I finished the match. I'm really happy.

"[I changed] nothing really specific. I definitely started returning better which really made a difference and put a lot of pressure on his service games, and that led to a few more mistakes from him and helped my level go up.

"I think mentally I was pretty good for the whole match. I'd say the tennis was the thing that improved the most as the match went on."

On how he's feeling after injuries: "I feel actually really good. One of the things I was saying to my coach is I actually could have gone for a few more sets out there. So that's pretty positive considering where I was a week ago, I wasn't looking great in terms of my back so I'm just really happy with the way I've been able to respond to that.

"Obviously I had a rib injury that took me out for two months and the back's a recurring thing but it feels good. Really happy with where I am physically."

On deciding not to play at Eastbourne to be fit for Wimbledon: "That was the thing that I really thought about - look what's coming next week. Obviously you want to perform at Eastbourne in front of a home crowd and any ATP tournament is big, but I knew I wanted to be healthy at Wimbledon and play my best tennis at Wimbledon. Today it paid off."

Goodness me, another double fault for Alexander Zverev on break point and he gives the break of serve straight back to Alexander Blockx.

Seven double faults in the match for the German. Blockx has served eight.

That might be the clinching shot of this match!

If Alexander Zverev can serve as he has done for the vast majority of this match, it is almost done here. There have just been small moments when he has let the intensity go.

Alexander Blockx, who has been so strong mentally and physically throughout this match, knows he is clutching at straws now really. He needs Zverev's serve to fail again - and it just might.

    It's 15-40 - two break-back points for Blockx...

  5. Choinski wins first setpublished at 18:45 BST 30 June

    *Kopriva 3-6 0-0 Choinski

Britain's Jan Choinski has made a strong start against the Czech Republic's Vit Kopriva by taking the first set 6-3.

The 30-year-old sealed it in emphatic fashion by holding to love with an ace.

Choinski, ranked 100th in the world, is the last remaining Briton in action today and is aiming to become the fourth home player to reach the second round.

  6. Zverev breaks in fourth setpublished at 18:41 BST 30 June

    Blockx 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-7 (5-7) 2-3 Zverev*

Alexander Zverev will be keen to get this first-round match wrapped up in four sets if possible, and conserve as much energy as he can for the days ahead.

And this will definitely help! Alexander Blockx saves the first of two break points but Zverev fires a backhand winner down the line on the second of them to seal the break.

The German hasn't lost his serve at all in this match and if he holds three more times, he'll be into round two.

    Mensik 5-7 6-3 6-3 3-6 7-6 (10-7) Samuel

Jakub Mensik, speaking after his five-set victory against Toby Samuel: "Toby played some unbelievable tennis and he showed it last week in Eastbourne. The level he was showing and the performance, he didn't give me any free points. An incredible job.

"I am super happy that I kept it on my side in the end. Every story has it's own journey. I am happy I can walk out and be in the second round.

"The momentum is key. I lost the first set, then I was winning 2-1 and then out of nowhere it was the fifth set. He started [the match] very well, I came back, and it was 5-3 serving for the match. Two lucky shots on his side made him come back. It's crazy how one second can be a total game-changer.

"I'm happy that even though I could have finished earlier, in the tie-break I stayed focused and played point by point.

"I felt the energy from the crowd, even though they were supporting Toby! It's fine, the London crowd is always so polite. It's good to play in front of you guys even when the atmosphere is on his side, I still feel the energy. [There is] a lot of Czech fans as well."

Wawrinka saved three break points in the third game as the set went with serve.

The 41-year-old failed to convert his first three set points in the tie-break but when Berrettini double-faulted to give up 8-7, Wawrinka made no mistake with a big first serve that the Italian couldn't return into court.

After 10 British defeats on Monday, there have been three home successes on day two at Wimbledon:

    • Katie Swan became the first British player to reach the second round with a 6-4 6-4 success over Romanian world number 173 Irina-Camelia Begu
    • Arthur Fery overcame a nosebleed to beat Bosnian Damir Dzumhur 3-6 6-2 6-2 6-1
    • Jacob Fearnley produced a superb comeback to prevail 3-6 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-2 after three and a half hours.

    • Billy Harris put up a good fight but lost to 19th seed Karen Khachanov 6-3 5-7 6-3 6-3

Toby Samuel could not have pushed the 15th seed much closer to the brink than that!

But after three and a half hours, there was a resigned look on Samuel's face after he presented Jakub Mensik with three match points.

That's 15 British singles players out in the first-round at their home slam.

But there was no sense of that external doom and gloom anywhere inside court three this evening as Samuel fought valiantly - and he walks off to huge cheers and a well-deserved standing ovation.

Samuel has given a fantastic performance. This will definitely not be the last we see of him. I expect big things because he has a great game and he troubled one of the best players in the world for long parts of this match. In the end it just got a little tense for him.

Samuel shouldn't hang his head that's for sure - he should savour this moment and reflect on this match to make himself keep raising his ranking.

He played a great match, nothing to be ashamed of, and he played probably better than he thought he could play and that gives you hope.
