A couple of unforced errors to start the third set by Novak Djokovic and he's 0-30 down on serve.

Then a great point as Carlos Alcaraz chases a lob, hits a superb tweener and Djokovic just about reaches it for an overhead winner.

A clutch second serve gets Djokovic back to 30-30.

The next two points are shared - deuce.

Novak Djokovic really needs to reassert himself in this match and send some signals down the other side of the court.

He looks a little weary, I'm going to be honest.

The real Alcaraz has finally entered the match. The longer this goes on, the more likely Alcaraz will win.

Djokovic decides to head off court for a breather. Wise move.

Alcaraz isn't happy about something, but not sure exactly what he's complaining to umpire John Blom about.

Perhaps the roof? Alcaraz has a deep discussion with tournament referee Wayne McKewen and glances up to the sky.

I agree with Carlos - if it's not raining, open it. Carlos is very upset about it.

The roof is not very open. They often do this in Melbourne when it is hot, but not hot enough to close it.

Carlos Alcaraz would like to see the roof open properly, which would make it windier inside the arena, and that perhaps might be in his favour.

While Novak Djokovic is off court, Carlos Alcaraz is deep in conversation with the umpire and tournament director regarding the roof, which is slightly open -but not fully - because of a threat of rain.

Alcaraz was better in the second set, he's not as good as we expect him to be, but Djokovic's level has fallen off a cliff.

We shouldn't forget what happened on Friday. Occasionally you see players, like in 2012 when Djokovic was 14 years younger, he played five hours against Andy Murray in the semi-final and then nearly six hours to beat Rafael Nadal in the final here.

(After the marathon semi-finals) I think we can expect that this might not be the best-quality Grand Slam final of all time. It might be the most historic of all time though and if it's full of errors and close, it could be one of the more thrilling ones.

After Novak Djokovic's 33-minute opening set, Carlos Alcaraz responds by taking the second just 36 minutes later.

A big roar from the Spaniard. He has very much announced himself in this Australian Open final now.

Djokovic has already guzzled a lot of fuel.

The serve is nowhere near as precise and the groundstrokes are nowhere near as punchy.

It's chalk and cheese, the two sets from Novak.

  13. Alcaraz breaks againpublished at 09:51 GMT 1 February

    *Alcaraz 2-6 5-2 Djokovic

That's the double break for Carlos Alcaraz, as Novak Djokovic knocks a tame forehand into the net.

The Spaniard will look to level up with an efficient set of his own now.

  14. Break points Alcarazpublished at 09:51 GMT 1 February

    Alcaraz 2-6 4-2 Djokovic*

That's a superb winner from Carlos Alcaraz, crashing a backhand down the line for 15-30.

The world number one is really firing now, while Novak Djokovic is just suffering a bit of a dip in his level. Two break points to come!

I think both players are suffering out here (after lengthy semi-final matches). There might be some ups and downs, as far as energy is concerned.

An ace for 40-0 helps Carlos Alcaraz to a rapid hold without reply from Novak Djokovic as he begins to really find his rhythm on serve now.

Djokovic is just not quite on top of those returns as much as he was in the first set. He's catching it a little bit later.

  18. Djokovic holds servepublished at 09:46 GMT 1 February

    *Alcaraz 2-6 3-2 Djokovic

Neither player quite executes their drop shot as they would ideally have liked, but Novak Djokovic is able to guide in a closing backhand to take an important first point on his serve.

Another backhand winner ensures he takes control of this latest game, before Carlos Alcaraz gets fortunate with another shot off the net cord which Djokovic wrongly decides to leave as it catches the line.

Yep, he's pretty annoyed with that. But he resets quickly to remain within striking range.

Djokovic will need to wrap this up quickly to win, not sure he could do another five-setter.

    Bob

Djokovic wants to win in three sets ideally after his semi-final marathon. Can he keep Alcaraz at bay for another two sets? A huge achievement if Novak wins today!

  20. Alcaraz saves break point to holdpublished at 09:41 GMT 1 February

    Alcaraz 2-6 3-1 Djokovic*

An unforced error is very frustrating for Novak Djokovic as the break point slips from his grasp.

It's all the encouragement Carlos Alcaraz needs as he gets Djokovic moving around the court before the Serb eventually folds at the net.

A huge swing of the fist from the world number one! The fightback is on.
