Sigh. Jannik Sinner sends a backhand long.

Make that eight break points wasted in this fifth set. Deary me.

Jannik Sinner steps inside the baseline and wrong-foots Novak Djokovic with a down the line backhand.

At the end of a brutal baseline exchange, he succeeds in dragging the Serb wide on his backhand and puts away the easiest of volleys at the net.

Djokovic nets a backhand. Three more break points for Sinner. He's already wasted five in this set...

From inside the media centre, you can hear shrieks every time Djokovic wins a point.

We might have gone past 1am here, but none of the hordes of Serbian fans watching on the big screen outside Rod Laver Arena have moved.

That's a slight lie. They have moved to their feet, dancing in celebration as Djokovic breaks in the decider.

It's going to be a heck of a party down there if their hero sees this one through.

As a tennis fan, I saw Djokovic as a villain for years. However with Murray, Federer and Nadal retiring, it's hard to respect his extraordinary longevity. It's the first time I've found myself rooting for him anyway!

I am not a fan of Djokovic, however I have to say that I am amazed by his longevity and his ability at times to still give the younger players a great match, he is a machine

    Mark in Belfast

People are too nostalgic. Yes, Djokovic at the moment is the greatest there's ever been, but to say a 22 and 24-year-old will never get near him is madness. They themselves are nowhere near their peaks, and Novak has come into this after effectively five days off

Jannik Sinner sends a forehand long and it's Novak Djokovic who breaks first in the fifth set!

He's saved five break points on his own serve and converted the only one he's had against the Italian in this deciding set.

Ace number 26 whistles by Novak Djokovic: 30-0.

The Serb, once again going for a thunderous forehand, finds the net: 40-15.

But he pegs Jannik Sinner back, first bringing a forehand error with a deep return and then getting Rod Laver Arena on its feet with a heftily struck cross-court forehand.

    Deuce.

Novak Djokovic holds to 15 with an ace. No issues in that service game.

I can't stop thinking about those five break points that Jannik Sinner wasted.

It just feels like Djokovic is the one that's looking up the mountain at the moment. Sinner has found something extra in this game. He looks very calm and in control.

Jannik Sinner pumps his racquet as he takes a 0-15 lead with a forehand which kisses the line.

Novak Djokovic responds with a forehand winner of his own, coming on the approach and receiving the ball with both feet off the ground.

    What a ridiculous sport.

Right from the word go in this final set Sinner has looked like a different player. Way more energy, way more power coming out of his ground strokes. He just looks fully in command, in the driving seat.

This just shows to me that both Sinner or Alcaraz wouldn’t match Djokovic at his peak. The fact he can still give them a game at 38 years of age proves it!

Djokovic can dig deeper than most anyone in the sporting world, maybe this is meant to be. He deserves a place in tennis history.

This debate about which generation is better. Novak is nearly 40 and hanging with a youngster. Let's get real. The big three will always rule the roost.

Novak Djokovic secures the hold with a booming forehand onto the baseline that a chasing Jannik Sinner can only return into the net.

He's saved five break points in this fifth set alone. Penny for Jannik Sinner's thoughts.
