Ronnie O'Sullivan briskly goes about his business, moving quickly round the table, as he finds some early rhythm.

Easy as you like for the Rocket.

He Guoqiang misses a straightforward red of his own. A few nerves from both players as they attempt to settle.

Ronnie O'Sullivan chalks his cue as he analyses the table between shots.

Ronnie O'Sullivan comes down the stairs at the Crucible after being introduced by master of ceremonies Rob Walker.

The 50-year-old strolls out to 'Drops of Jupiter' by American rock band Train.

He nearly heads to the wrong table, before doing a quick about turn. The Rocket looks relaxed.

It's great to get a sighting of the lesser-spotted O'Sullivan!

Brilliant to have him back on these shores and he's on a quest - it's very important for him to try to get that eighth championship.

I've seen him around the venue the last couple of days and he looks focused.

    Wu 8-1 Lei (14:30 BST)

The other match at the Crucible this afternoon is an all-China affair as Wu Yize faces Lei Peifan on table two.

Wu is well and truly in control with an 8-1 lead after a dominant performance yesterday. Lei needs to win the first frame today or it's probably curtains.

I'm just looking forward to watching him play - he's the best player in the world when he's on song.

It's just fascinating to see how he's going to perform.

Any time there is a Ronnie O'Sullivan match at the Crucible it is always one of the hottest tickets of the tournament.

The queues to get inside on a lovely sunny afternoon were snaking along Tudor Square with the Rocket taking on Chinese debutant He Guoqiang on table one.

There will be many fans on the other side of the arena hoping that Wu Yize, currently leading 8-1, wraps up a quick win over Lei Peifan on table two.

As soon as that match is over, the divider in the middle of the floor will be raised and then the whole theatre can watch the O'Sullivan match.

He's not played many matches on tour this season so there is a buzz of anticipation about this long-awaited return.

If you've ever wondered why so many snooker fans don't like Trump, well in the last couple of frames we've seen why. Fluke after fluke after fluke. No one has more, not even Steve Davis in his prime.

    Kevin, Fareham

The criticism is bit unfair on Trump, I love watching him play. He gets his fair share of flukes but like Hendry said, he can do things no other player can and that's pure skill. He also showed great mental strength to come back from that start.

  14. Pullen impresses but trails Wakelin by onepublished at 14:00 BST 21 April

    Wakelin 5-4 Pullen

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at the Crucible

Liam Pullen dropped off the World Snooker Tour at the end of last season, only then to instantly regain his tour card weeks later at Q School.

The 20-year-old from York is ranked 86th in the world and had to battle through four qualifying rounds to make his Crucible debut.

Before the tournament started, he spoke of how he, as a 12-year-old, had watched the 2018 final between Mark Williams and John Higgins and was left "star-struck" by a chance encounter with Higgins in a Pizza Express.

But if he was feeling any nerves, he did not show it as he made breaks of 57, 63, 97 and 58, although he still finds himself 5-4 behind against fellow Englishman Chris Wakelin, a quarter-finalist last year.

Wakelin, helped by breaks of 66 and 82, holds a one-frame advantage with that match being played to a finish on Wednesday morning from 10:00 BST.

But Pullen can be pleased with how he performed and it was another bright spot for young English players after 19-year-old Stan Moody gave 2024 champion Kyren Wilson a real scare before losing 10-7 on Monday.

On the other table, China's Wu Yize holds an 8-1 lead over compatriot Lei Peifan.

If Wu finishes the job in quick fashion, the screen will be raised so the whole arena can witness Ronnie O'Sullivan beginning his quest for a record-extending eighth Crucible crown.

Liam Pullen can be delighted with his first session of snooker at the Crucible Theatre.

The 20-year-old debutant wins the final frame of the morning session to keep right on the heels of world number 13 Chris Wakelin.

The balls were all over place at the start of frame nine but Pullen compiled a brilliant 58 break to leave Wakelin needing snookers.

The world number 86 - the lowest ranked player remaining in this year's tournament - will resume tomorrow morning just a frame behind his seeded opponent.

  19. Trump recovers from 4-1 down to lead Wilsonpublished at 13:34 BST 21 April

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at the Crucible

World number one Judd Trump recovered from a slow start to hold a narrow lead over Gary Wilson in their first-round match at the World Snooker Championship.

Trump, the 2019 winner, lost both of the opening frames and four of the first five with Wilson, ranked 27th, holding a 4-1 lead.

But Trump then won the final four frames of the session, including superb breaks of 128 and 77 to hold a 5-4 advantage before the match restarts at (19:00 BST).

"The last couple of frames have been the best I've seen from Judd for a long time," said seven-time champion Stephen Hendry on BBC TV commentary.

Trump, 36, has been top of the world rankings since August 2024 and will extend that run if he makes it into at least the last 16.
