    Trump 6-5 Wilson

    John Parrott
1991 world champion on BBC Four

The last couple of frames earlier on showed Judd Trump in a different light. Yes, he had flukes but he made the most of them in both frames. He looked like he was starting to hit the ball properly.

If Judd can get through I have got a feeling he is going to fly here. So far he hasn't really shown his best this year, so there is a big performance coming from somewhere.

  2. Trump edges in frontpublished at 20:08 BST 21 April

    Trump 6-5 Wilson

An attritional 11th frame between Judd Trump and Gary Wilson with neither player able to string together a defining break.

Wilson misses the green into the top corner pocket trailing Trump by eight points at 42-34 which allows the world number one a chance to clear up.

He doesn't quite but, needing two snookers with just pink and black left, Wilson plays on.

However, Trump eventually sinks the pink to move ahead.

  3. Murphy nudges aheadpublished at 19:56 BST 21 April

    Murphy 6-5 Fan

Shaun Murphy responds to Fan Zhengyi by chalking up the next frame in his favour.

Murphy puts together a fluent break of 74 and when he misses a black with four reds left on the table Fan is happy to concede without putting a point on the board.

  4. All square on table onepublished at 19:38 BST 21 April

    Murphy 5-5 Fan

Shaun Murphy and Fan Zhengyi battle on table one. Fan goes in off the black with the frame at his mercy to let Murphy back in at 68-38.

A bit of safety play ensues and Murphy picks up a snooker on the green to leave himself with a chance to snaffling the frame.

However, Fan pots the green with an incredible double down the table - see above clip - before he sinks the blue to draw level.

  5. A long evening ahead...published at 19:29 BST 21 April

    Michael Emons

Five-five on table two, and potentially 5-5 on table one. It's going to be a long night of action.

Get comfortable, we're here for a while. We have not seen any match be closer than 10-7 so far in this tournament, with three of the nine completed matches ending at that score.

Will there be some final-frame drama coming our way later on?

    Trump 5-5 Wilson

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Four

Gary Wilson was quick out of the starting blocks and will feel he deserves that after a bit of bad luck in the first session. He gave Judd Trump a sniff of that frame on a risky pink and it is risk reward. You have to be aggressive without overly aggressive. Trump will be thinking about scrambling over the line.

  7. Wilson pulls levelpublished at 19:26 BST 21 April

    Trump 5-5 Wilson

Gary Wilson opens up with a break of 58 - a statement of intent. But he cannot quite cut the pink into the middle pocket as he breaks up the pack leaving Judd Trump a way back into the frame.

The world number one inches way to a break of 31 but the final red proves troublesome and he misses an attempted double.

Wilson promptly dispatches the red and the remaining colours to take the frame.

    Trump 5-4 Wilson

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Four

If you said to Gary Wilson you will be 5-4 up or 5-4 down to Judd Trump he might be happy with it. But having been 4-1 up earlier he's not going to be happy with it. Obviously seeing the flukes, and losing a frame when Judd needed a snooker, is a horrible way to end a session.

    Murphy 5-4 Fan

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Four

I was thinking a couple of years ago that maybe Shaun Murphy was coming off the pace a bit, that he was thinking of doing more commentary work because he felt like he needed a B-plan. But I think his game is back on track now. He's going to be a danger if he plays as well as he has done.

Is this the year Shaun Murphy finally replicates his unexpected underdog Crucible triumph of 2005?

Well, he's in a bit of a dogfight with Chinese qualifier Fan Zhengyi.

The 'Magician', however, did conjure up a 140 break in the final frame of Monday evening's session to nudge 5-4 ahead.

All to play for still, though.

    Steve Davis

It seemed to be a trend that the top players were under pressure in the first round against highly competitive qualifiers, but this year it's been a different story. Maybe it shows how you good you need to be to get into the top 16 so they are the strongest this year.

A best of 19 match can be scary and sometimes the seeded player settles down in the second session, but you still have to put your opponent away.

  13. Can Trump keep seed superiority going?published at 19:03 BST 21 April

    Trump 5-4 G Wilson

No top-16 player has been eliminated from this year's World Championship, with nine seeds through from nine completed matches.

For much of Tuesday morning's session between world number one Judd Trump and qualifier Gary Wilson, however, that statistic looked in danger.

Wilson, a 2019 Crucible semi-finalist (beaten by Trump at that stage) established a 4-1 lead with breaks of 139 and 77, aided by some uncharacteristic Trump errors.

However, the Bristolian ended the session strongly, aided by the odd stroke of luck but also some doggedness in winning a frame from snookers required, to take the final four frames for a slender 5-4 lead.

    O'Sullivan 7-2 He

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

Ronnie O'Sullivan makes it looks easy but it's bread and butter stuff for him. A couple of frames he lost it a little bit but a satisfactory session for him. Generally he did what he had to do.

  17. O'Sullivan in controlpublished at 17:48 BST 21 April

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at the Crucible

Seven-time winner Ronnie O'Sullivan began his quest for a record-breaking eighth World Championship title with a dominant opening session against Chinese debutant He Guoqiang.

O'Sullivan, 50, took the first five frames and holds a 7-2 advantage, needing only three frames for victory when the match resumes on Wednesday afternoon (14:30 BST).

He pulled out of the Masters in January and has only played in three of six ranking events in 2026, reaching the final of the World Open in China last month.

During that tournament he made a break of 153, the highest ever recorded in professional snooker, after benefiting from an early snooker that left him a free ball, which then acted like a 16th red.

He was playing at the Crucible for a 34th season and instantly took control as breaks of 72, 97 and 113 helped him into a 5-0 lead, with 25-year-old He, the world number 47, already in massive trouble.

The Chinese player did manage to win two frames in a row, but O'Sullivan claimed both the last two frames of the session, helped by breaks of 52 and 86.

    O'Sullivan 7-2 He

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

This has really been a masterclass from Ronnie O'Sullivan. It's been like watching a genius at work.

You can't help but feel a little bit sorry for He Guoqiang who was sat in that chair for the first few frames while everything went wrong.

He'll have been looking forward to this match, but the Crucible can be a lonely place at times.

  19. Rocket finishes day five aheadpublished at 17:37 BST 21 April

    O'Sullivan 7-2 He

No second century of the session but an 86 break from the 'Rocket' and a five-frame advantage.

A fist bump between the combatants and the afternoon session is complete.

Now he's in the O'Sullivan 'zone' of delicate kisses and cannons in and around the pink spot (black on the cushion).

Could be frame over soon enough, 50-odd ahead and counting.
