What a pot from Shaun Murphy!

That final red wasn't safe enough and the Englishman knocks it into the green pocket.

But then his safety shot isn't the best and, with just the colours left, Murphy leads by 15.

    Match stats

Really good stuff from Wu Yize.

Nice half-century break after Hossein Vafaei's visit ended on 39.

He took a risk on a couple of reds - potted one, missed another but by chance or design, he snookered Vafaei on the two remaining reds in doing so. Shot to nothing, perhaps.

Vafaei escapes but leaves Wu an easy red and he dishes up to move two frames in front.

    Zhao 9-10 Murphy

The blue proves to be Shaun Murphy's undoing. It was in the way of two reds near the corner and Murphy fails to pot it.

Zhao Xintong returns to the table with a 30-point deficit - he gets 16 of those points with two reds and two blacks, before playing safe off the final red.

    This is anyone's frame now.

    Zhao 9-10 Murphy

Inside, Shaun Murphy will be breathing a huge sigh of relief as a black off the spot only just drops in off the jaw.

His lead is up to 29 with 59 points remaining, but the four remaining reds are not best placed.

What an incredible set of quarter-finals. One's finished 13-11, one is 9-7 and nothing is separating these two matches. Every time a player goes ahead, the other responds. They're pushing each other all the way and to greater heights!

I'm not sure what Zhao expected to happen with that shot because there was never any chance he was going to be on the black.

Shaun Murphy misses a long blue so can only score one point, but he isn't punished as Zhao misses a fairly similar red to the one he missed about two minutes earlier.

    Zhao 9-10 Murphy

This is a surprise - Zhao Xintong misses a fairly straight red to the corner and his break ends on 20.

He was trying to free the black at the same time and maybe took his eye off the pot?

    Zhao 9-10 Murphy

For the first time in this session, Shaun Murphy and Zhao Xintong are involved in a lengthy safety battle.

I say lengthy - anything above three or four shots apiece is a lengthy safety exchange for these two.

Zhao ends it with a long red to the right corner. Is he on a colour? He goes for a difficult blue, gets it and lands perfectly on the next red in baulk.

    Wu 6-5 Vafaei

Not been many errors on this side of the divider either - as evidenced by Hossein Vafaei's frankly ridiculous 98% pot success rate in this session.

But he just gets in to a screw shot into the pack a bit too much and runs out of position on a break of 39 in this final frame before the mid-session interval.

Ooh, and now Wu Yize has Vafaei in a fair bit of trouble behind the green with a fine safety... good escape by the Iranian but he leaves a long red that there's no way Wu will turn down. Pots it. Really good black to middle follows it. Chance to get back into this frame.

    Zhao 9-10 Murphy

Shaun Murphy pots the balls he needs to leave Zhao Xintong at the "snookers required" stage and now he's eyeing up his first century break of the match.

It's not to be but it's another frame on the board for the 2005 world champion, who needs three more to reach the semi-finals.

    Rob Walker

    It's just one-visit snooker.

It's about as good as it gets and brilliant to watch.

The way they are potting the balls and strutting around the table, you'd never think neither of them have made it this far before.

  13. Postpublished at 15:19 BST 29 April

    Zhao 9-9 Murphy

Shaun Murphy is putting together another decent break on the other side of the curtain, although it could stall on 40 with the cue ball tight on the side cushion and nothing obvious to go at.

He finds a red in the mini bunch and deposits it in the corner, splitting the other reds in the process, and now the frame should be his.

  14. Wu back in frontpublished at 15:18 BST 29 April

    Wu 6-5 Vafaei

Trading blows like mighty heavyweights, this pair.

Wu Yize lands two in succession, following up his 76 break in the previous frame with a 71.

    Mesmerising to watch.

    Wu 5-5 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei has already beaten two Chinese players on his way to the quarter-finals.

He defeated Gao Yang 10-4 in the final round of qualifying - world number 32 Vafaei is the only qualifier still in the tournament, indeed he was the only qualifier to reach the last 16 - and then he pumped former semi-finalist Si Jiahui 10-3 in his Crucible opener.

In both of those matches the Iranian won nine straight frames - he's not going to replicate that feat here.

Wu Yize might yet do so though - he's in again in frame 11 with a similar chance to his previous frame-winning visit, lots of reds nicely placed and the black available, his lead over 40 already.

All of the things we've said about Shaun Murphy and how wonderful he cues, just replace his name with Zhao Xintong.

These two are the two most fluent players in the event and it's a joy to watch them.

    Zhao 9-9 Murphy

Zhao Xintong clears the table with a break of 71 and, to be honest, it never looked in any doubt.

Both players have shown they're in prime scoring form in the opening two frames of the session.

China's Wu Yize, 22, is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in snooker.

He was aged 14 when he became World Under-21 champion in 2018 and clinched his first ranking title, the International Championship, earlier this season.

That put him into the top 16 for the first time and he began the World Championship ranked 10th in the world.

This is Wu's third appearance at the Crucible and this year's tournament is the first at which he has won a match at the Sheffield venue. He lost to Neil Robertson on debut in 2023 and pushed eventual finalist Mark Williams close in the first round last year.

    Zhao 8-9 Murphy

Zhao Xintong leaves Shaun Murphy tucked up behind the brown. The first attempt misses and so does the second, but crucially he gifts Zhao a free ball from the second try.

The reigning champion has a chance for the counter-attack.

    Wu 5-5 Vafaei

Yep, Wu Yize picks off the required reds and colours with a fine 76 break to get himself back on terms.

Lovely break, all centred around pink and black, rarely ever out of position.

Hossein Vafaei decides to come back to the table despite needing five snookers - but that doesn't last long.
