  1. Will Zhao v Ding draw the biggest TV audience in snooker history?published at 14:27 BST 25 April

    Zhao 4-4 Ding (14:30 BST)

Over the next few days, a World Championship match might break the record for snooker's biggest-ever television audience.

But it is not the last-16 encounter between Ronnie O'Sullivan and John Higgins, nor does it feature world number one Judd Trump, or three-time winner Mark Williams.

Such has been the rapid growth of the game in China, the match between Ding Junhui and Zhao Xintong is the tie in question, as the country's first ranking event winner and trailblazer goes up against its first world champion - and the defending champion in Sheffield.

"It's a big clash and it could surpass all records, it could be hundreds of millions [watching] in China," said Jason Ferguson, the chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), who has been a key figure in the growth of the sport there.

"It could be the highest [television audience], we just keep on breaking records with snooker, it just keeps growing. Since Zhao Xintong won [the world title], snooker has continued to grow and recently we went to the number one sport watched on state media, China Central TV.

"We have a really popular world champion. He is popular, cool and funny - and funny in both languages. Him winning has had a huge impact on the sport and it has gone from strength to strength."

  2. Finely poised heading into Saturday's sessionpublished at 14:17 BST 25 April

All the talk about big audiences, well, Ding Junhui and Zhao Xintong couldn't be more finely poised going into Saturday's session from an audience perspective.

Neither were able to get more than a frame ahead of the other in a tightly contested opening session.

It was scrappy at times from two players we expect so much from, with Zhao's 116 being the only century of the opening eight frames.

Zhao did have the opportunity to take a 5-3 lead into Saturday but on 61, he missed the black off its spot and allowed Ding to knock in a 62 and ensure we go into today's afternoon session level.

  3. Vafaei 'fighting to make Iranians proud'published at 14:10 BST 25 April

Iran snooker player Hossein Vafaei said he "is fighting to make Iranians proud" as he aims to go further than before at the World Championship

The 32-year-old beat Chinese practice partner Gao Yang 10-4 in the final round of qualifying last week to secure a place at the Crucible for a fifth successive season.

Vafaei, who lost in the last 16 twice, then became the only qualifier to win in the first round with a comprehensive 10-3 win over China's 15th seed Si Jiahui.

But Vafaei said it had been extremely difficult to focus on the sport with the ongoing conflict in his home country, which began at the end of February.

"It's been very hard, very, very hard. My family are safe," said Vafaei. "I'm fighting as well for my country, for my family and I'm trying my best and will give it my all.

"If I do well, if they can see me - of course some of them can see me - it will be a proud moment," said Vafaei.

  4. All tied up before Sundaypublished at 14:04 BST 25 April

    Wakelin 4-4 Robertson

Tight? Edgy? Call it as you wish.

Chris Wakelin certainly won't care after fighting back from 4-1 down.

Here's a look at the stats following that first morning session.

    Wakelin 4-4 Robertson

The frame has indeed ended! And so has the session.

Chris Wakelin fights back from 4-1 down to tie things up at 4-4 ahead of things resuming tomorrow.

We didn't get a break above anything in the 70s in this session in what was a very edgy one throughout.

With that said, it is looking very finely poised before getting back under way on Sunday.

  6. 'This frame may never end'published at 13:48 BST 25 April

We're already over the three hour mark in these seven-and-a-bit frames.

It's hard to see an end to this frame. It may never end.

  7. What's to come?published at 13:44 BST 25 April

While Chris Wakelin and Neil Robertson continue to battle it out in their final frame of the morning session, a reminder of what is to come this afternoon and evening.

Reigning world champion Zhao Xintong resumes his match against Ding Junhui in the next hour, while former world champion Judd Trump is also in action.

There's also the small matter of 'The Rocket' Ronnie O'Sullivan facing off with old foe John Higgins this evening.

    Order of play for Saturday:

    14:30

    • Zhao Xintong (1) 4-4 Ding Junhui (16) *
    • Hossein Vafaei v Judd Trump (2)

    19:00

Chris Wakelin is growing in confidence. He has played some wonderful shots and has certainly kept us on our toes with some shock choices and decision-making.

    Wakelin 3-4 Robertson

And the mistake is made my Neil Robertson who leaves the blue open for Chris Wakelin to get in and dispatch brilliantly.

He follows that up with the pink and Robertson concedes.

A strong shake of the head by the Australian as he takes his seat with one frame remaining of the morning session.

This is a very nervy end to this seventh frame.

  11. Postpublished at 13:13 BST 25 April

    Wakelin 2-4 Robertson

Neil Robertson and Chris Wakelin are tied at 40 points apiece with just the colours remaining.

As has been the the story for much of this match, it has turned into a snooker/safety-fest with neither able to get a clean shot off to clear up.

The frames between these two have been very long in this morning session.

Former world number one Mark Allen defeated Kyren Wilson 13-9 in a thrilling last-16 tie to become the second player into the 2026 World Championship quarter-finals, joining Shaun Murphy in the last eight.

Northern Ireland's Allen led 5-0, but then lost six successive frames to trail 6-5 against the 2024 winner.

But Allen had moved into a 9-7 advantage by the end of Friday's first session and managed to win four of the six frames on Saturday to reach the last eight for a sixth time.

The 40-year-old's best performances at the Crucible came in 2009 and 2023 when he lost in the semi-finals and he will face either 2013 finalist Barry Hawkins or three-time champion Mark Williams.

Hawkins holds a 10-6 advantage with that match played to a finish from 19:00 BST.

The quarter-final, again the best of 25 frames, will begin on Tuesday and finish on Wednesday.

Saturday is an excellent day of action at the Crucible, with seven world champions among the 12 players, with seven-time winner Ronnie O'Sullivan facing four-time champion John Higgins at 19:00 BST.

  14. Wakelin gets one backpublished at 12:48 BST 25 April

    Wakelin 2-4 Robertson

Chris Wakelin is back on the board for the first time since frame one with a break of 77.

He looked for all the world that he'd nail the first century break of this morning but misses a long red.

That won't bother him too much, though. He needed a frame back, and he got one.

  15. 'Allen gets his own back'published at 12:39 BST 25 April

    Wilson 9-13 Allen

    Dennis Taylor
1985 world champion on BBC Two

Mark Allen will be so pleased because he got his own back and reversed the score of 10 years ago. He beats Kyren Wilson 13 frames to nine and marches on to the quarter-final.

  16. Allen moves on to quarter-finalspublished at 12:37 BST 25 April

    Wilson 9-13 Allen

What a way to clinch his spot in the quarter-finals.

Masterful cueing from Mark Allen in the latter stages to book his place in the next round.

Kyren Wilson battled throughout and at one stage looked favourite for the frame but after an unfortunate snooker of himself, Allen punished him to the maximum.

It is the first time 'The Pistol' has beaten Wilson at the Crucible theatre. He will be absolutely brimming with confidence after that.

The two hug it out at the end which is wonderful to see. A great match.

  17. Robertson makes it four on the spinpublished at 12:33 BST 25 April

    Wakelin 1-4 Robertson

Back from their own mid-session interval and back on the board for Neil Robertson, who extends his lead further.

From 1-0 down, the Australian now leads 4-1 after another consolation from Chris Wakelin.

  18. 'Wilson has to live up to 'The Warrior' name here'published at 12:24 BST 25 April

    Wilson 9-12 Allen

    Dennis Taylor
1985 world champion on BBC Two

Kyren Wilson's nickname is 'The Warrior' and he has got to show us that here and live up to that name because he is a battler, he will never give up, this player.

  20. Allen closing in on quarter-finalspublished at 12:08 BST 25 April

    Wilson 9-12 Allen

Dennis Taylor is absolutely right. Mark Allen with a wonderful frame to put him just one frame away from a place in the quarter-finals.

There were some absolutely wonderful pots towards the back end of that that he had no right in making under pressure.

Kyren Wilson needs a monstrous run to turn this one around.
