Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells BBC Radio Scotland: "What an occasion.

"Fiji played really well, we knew they would, I felt they picked their strongest side today and it took a lot of work for us to break them down but also it took a really good defensive performance.

"Fiji didn't really break us that often, in that final quarter the guys were outstanding. We'll take a few positives from that

"The areas we need to work on is when we have all that possession and pressure we have to get seven and 14 points and make it a bit easier for ourselves.

"The maul is an area every team has struggled with in this competition because of the law changes. Credit to Fiji they made it hard for us but we'll look back and there were two or three clear opportunities we should have taken but they made us work for everything.

"I thought our bench did really well. Something I've learned over the last 12 months, the bench can help you change momentum. The players can come up with solutions themselves but the bench can give you energy and solutions but also bravery.

"We're a team that will back our decisions and that put real pressure on Fiji.

"I'm pleased there were no serious injuries today. We changed the team, that was always the plan, we want to build more depth.

"I was really pleased with how well the players who played last week played today and trained this week, it shows how much Scotland means to them.

"We delivered against Argentina, we created a lot against the Boks and learned a lot from that game. We can go into the break now with a positive campaign behind us and a positive Six Nations as well."

  5. Scotland 'thunderous' in second halfpublished at 16:13 BST 18 July

    FT: Fiji 17-33 Scotland

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer on Radio Scotland

I think at the start of the second half Scotland were on the right path, they came out with a lot of intent, started to go direct.

First half Scotland were nowhere near their own level, pretty pedestrian and predictable but in the second half they got it together and I thought they were thunderous.

Had they had another 10 minutes they would have scored another two or three tries.

They thoroughly deserved their win and their bonus point.

This is the best Fiji have played in quite a while and Scotland needed the heavy artillery to come off the bench.

Scotland captain Stafford McDowall to ITV Sport: "I'm really proud of the boys. We got loose and let Fiji into the game but we responded and the bench had a really big impact.

"We had to stick to what we have done all year. It was a good sign to see those lads coming on in the second half. I am off to be a groomsman at a wedding now..."

Job well done by Scotland in the end! They were on the ropes a bit at half time but had the quality from the bench to rally and see off a spirited Fiji.

I thought Cummings did really well to keep hold of it. He was definitely in control when the ball went to ground.

That might be that! Oh, it's being checked...

No that's a try! Fiji are tired and slow to get in shape and Cummings goes in more or less untouched, juggled the ball slightly but got it grounded.

Great exit play from Scotland, backing themselves.

The timing of Ollie Smith's pass to free Tom Jordan, who recognises he may as well give it to Van der Merwe as quickly as possible, was spot on.

Duhan van der Merwe has been kept quiet today, but now he gets the ball in hand with green grass ahead of him and powers down the left wing, before a desperate but brilliant lunging tackle just puts him into touch. He was nearly away!

A lot of huff and puff from Fiji, but Scotland's defence more than matched it.

It was the first time in this half Fiji have really had a chance.

Into the last 15. Fiji awake from their slumber and wrestle into the Scotland half, but they can't really breakthrough. Their attack was so clinical in the first half but looks sluggish now.

All credit to Scotland who have found much-needed intensity and energy in the last 10 minutes. It's Fiji now who look shot.
