He slaps down a serve out wide to get himself to 30-30, then finds another ace before Nadal, somehow, recovers from a sliding shot out wide to swing over a winner.

A body serve isn't dealt with by Medvedev, getting Nadal in front for the first time on his serve.

And the French Open champ crashes a big serve down the T to hold. Lovely serving.

A crouched Medvedev aims a backhand cross-court, and misses.

Rafa trips into a double fault for 15-30 and he puffs out his cheeks as Medvedev smashes his way to parity.

Medvedev is battering Rafa at the moment.

Medvedev started quickly here and he has hit a vein. He has been the man to beat and he has found that form. Rafa is pedal to the metal. This is what we expected and what we saw at the start of the first set.

Hello! Both players try out some deft movement, charging to the net as fast as their feet will carry them, and Medvedev somehow chases down a Nadal drop shot and passes him with a winner.

Rafa Nadal hasn't lost a match where he's won the first set since Acapulco in 2019, where Nick Kyrgios stunned him after saving two match points.

Positive signs for the Spaniard. Remember, he's never won the season-ending tournament...
