    Gauff v Vesnina

Coco Gauff has also confirmed she intends to play on the US Olympic team in Tokyo this summer.

"That was one of the goals this year, to qualify for the team," she said. "So, yeah, the decision was to always play if I was able to make the team.

"Especially my mom, she ran track. She didn't make the Olympics, but it was one of her dreams. She told me that I kind of accomplished that dream for her."

  5. Words of wisdom...published at 15:32 BST 1 July 2021

    Gauff v Vesnina

Coco Gauff saw off Britain's Francesca Jones in straight sets in the opening round and had some advice for her opponent afterwards.

"Also after the match it took her a while to get to the net," said Gauff. "I think she was really trying to savour the moment. I basically told her that you're going to have plenty more moments like this but you'll be the one winning the match instead.

"Don't let this match affect you because if you compete like that, the way she did, if you're a competitor, you compete hard every point, you'll have matches that go your way in the future.

"She's just an outstanding person, outstanding player, that she'll go far. I was just letting her know don't let this crush you because matches like this can really hurt or break a player.

"I don't want it to break her. I want her to build this for her, and next time when she has a match like this, maybe even against me or against someone else, that she knows what to do and come out on top."

Coco Gauff's stock is always on the rise and it's hard to believe she's only just turned 17.

The American reached the fourth round at Wimbledon on her first, and only, appearance in the main draw in 2019 and will be looking to at least match that this time around.

Gauff is the 20th seed and faces Russia's Elena Vesnina, a player twice her age who reached the semi-finals at SW19 five years ago.

That doesn't feel too long ago, but Gauff was just 12...

Third seed Elina Svitolina has been speaking about her second-round defeat by Magda Linette.

"I think mentally today I was not really in a good place," the Ukrainian said. "I need some time to analyse, but I think mentally it was not very good for me today.

"I need to reset, I need to rest. I need to, you know, feel again fresh to play the upcoming tournaments."

It's so far, so good for Russian world number two Daniil Medvedev on Court One.

The second seed leads Spanish 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz by a break in the opening set after breaking the teenager in his opening service game, at the third opportunity.

World 75 Alcaraz gets himself on the board in his next game, but some excellent serving sees Medvedev hold to love for a 4-1 advantage.

"I'm very happy to be through to the third round, couldn't be more pleased with myself. It was a bit of a tricky start - he came out firing and I was down a break

"It will be special to play Roger Federer or Richard Gasquet. Another opportunity to get out on the court. If there's a time to play Roger, now's the time I guess, but he's still a decent player."

"We had to do a lot of homework to try to figure out her [Blinkova's] game. She played a great match today - a few points here and there and it could have been a different story. I'm happy to be able to get through and get another opportunity to play.

"It's been a great year so far - it's really nice to have the fans in the stands again and Wimbledon wouldn't be the same place without you."

  17. Why so slippery at SW19?published at 15:18 BST 1 July 2021

There has been a lot of talk around slipping at Wimbledon this week, and one of the country's top slip-safety experts, Christian Harris, has laid out the factors for why this may occur...

Contamination: Can you keep the grass perfectly dry? Probably not – the surface is what it is: grass traps moisture. Players will sweat

Heel: Have shoes been made with a tennis players’ movements in mind? To me, it would be just as important to have a tread pattern that offered slip safety for lateral movement as linear movement. Just because a shoe has a texture on it, that doesn’t make it slip safe

Individual: Moving at speed in all directions, stretching and over-balancing, pushing your body to the limit and doing so in what must be one of the most tiring, gruelling sports on the planet… these are all recipes for slips to happen. But that’s the nature of the game. All players can do is try to not over-reach, over-stretch, over-balance

Maintenance: Cleaning isn’t relevant here, nor change of use, but wear is: as the grass wears, the surface becomes more solid and the grass stops becoming a barrier between the foot and the floor

Environment: Weather is playing a role here, as is condensation being trapped in as the roof is closed. This is the main contributing factor that is different this year than others – is there a way to control the environment better through air flow / air conditioning perhaps?

Surface: Unlike any hard floor, which we make safe day-in-day-out, you can’t anti-slip grass.

  18. Barty 'given plenty to think about'published at 15:16 BST 1 July 2021

    Barty 6-4 6-3 Blinkova

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Lovely to see that beautiful smile and a lovely warm handshake at the net.

Anna Blinkova certainly played her part in the match, she made it interesting and gave Ash Barty plenty to think about.

It was certainly a below-par Barty - the game ebbed and flowed and fluctuated but she finished with a flourish.

She made too many double faults and wasn't getting the first serve into play but she dug, she scratched and she found a way to get through, and showed great mental strength.
