As has already been alluded to, notable contributors to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic are being welcomed into the Royal Box throughout the tournament.

Today's guests include leaders who have developed the Covid vaccines, NHS nursing and critical care staff, and those who led clinical trials.

Hannah Ingram-Moore, the daughter of Captain Sir Tom Moore, is also among them, as is Formula 1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart.

After that slip, Djokovic has left skid marks on what he described as the “virgin” grass. Looks like a caravan trailer has gone off piste and across a soggy lawn. I can imagine the groundskeeper tutting somewhere from the side of the court. All that hard work…

  3. Draper saves break point to hold servepublished at 13:50 BST 28 June 2021

    *Djokovic 1-1 Draper

That will be a massive boost to Jack Draper as he saves a break point on his way to holding serve. Djokovic put a two-handed backhand just wide before an overhead smash gets Draper up and running, accompanied by a huge cheer from the home fans.

A slip from Djokovic, on the slick, wet grass, helps Draper see off that break point and the reigning champion seems to be OK. Deuce.

In his first service game, Jack Draper instantly has to go on the defensive as Novak Djokovic has a break point after a Draper forehand goes long.

While the first game didn’t go to plan, Draper found his feet at the start of the second. That first serve which Djokovic couldn’t divert back for 15-0 was greeted with a roar which would have been heard back in the Village - had the roof been open, of course.

A huge, huge cheer as the Brit wins his first two points in Grand Slam tennis. He's coming into this in good form after he reached the Queen's quarter-finals a couple of weeks ago, beating world number 23 Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik, then ranked 39th in the world, on the way.

  11. 'Coming back as a dad is a surreal experience - Draper seniorpublished at 13:40 BST 28 June 2021

    BBC Newsbeat

Jack Draper may know his way around the All England Club, having reached the boys' singles final in 2018 and with his dad Roger formerly the chief executive of the LTA.

But he has never played on Centre. Draper senior says the last time the 19-year-old was inside the famous court was actually watching today's opponent Novak Djokovic! That was when the Serb lost to Andy Murray in that 2013 final when Draper was aged 11.

So how is dad feeling today?

"A bit of a mixed bag of emotions really, a lot of pride, a lot of excitement, a bit of fear! I'm really proud of Jack, what he has achieved so far and hope this is another milestone on his journey," Roger told BBC Newsbeat's Betty Glover.

"I've been in sport a long time and on the surface I'm normally quite calm - but when it is your own son it is completely different. Coming back to tennis as a dad is a surreal experience.

"He is excited but very competitive. He expects to win tennis matches. He's not here to make up the numbers. He proved at Queen's he can mix it with the very best."

In the white corner… Novak Djokovic, two-time defending champion, world number one and 20-time Grand Slam winner.

In the, erm, other white corner… Jack Draper, British teenager given a wildcard and playing his first Wimbledon main-draw match.

There might only be around 7,500 fans in here but they made a heck of a noise when the pair strolled out.

The fans are glad they’re back. And the players are glad they’re back.

    Let’s go!

And, after a year without Wimbledon in 2020, we've got players on Centre Court - and some fans in the stand as we're at 50% capacity.

A massive step back to normality.

Novak Djokovic, who won the last singles match here with a five-set thriller to defeat Roger Federer in the 2019 final, against young Brit Jack Draper, ranked 253rd in the world.

He's won the trophy on five occasions, lost in one final and gone out in the semi-finals three times.

He has never been beaten in the first round, so a chance for Jack Draper to make some tennis history today.

A tender moment as the Wimbledon crowd cheer Monica Niculescu getting on the scoreboard here. She trails Aryna Sabalenka 5-1 in the opening set.

There's no doubt she was being willed to find something there in what has been wall-to-wall suffering so far.

Sabalenka sends an ace down for point one of game seven. She then closes the set with an ace - 102mph - on her second serve.

    Ruthless.

Eight years after watching Andy Murray defeat Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon, teenager Jack Draper is relishing the chance to take on the world number one on Centre Court.

Draper, 19, will make his debut in the main draw after being given a wild card and then seeing his name paired with the defending champion.

The Londoner was lucky enough to be among the crowd as an 11-year-old in 2013 when Murray ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s singles champion at the All England Club.

“That moment I saw him and I was really inspired by all that he’d achieved and it gave me the confidence that potentially I could do this one day,” recalled Draper.

As surprises go, the news you are going to be playing Novak Djokovic in your first Wimbledon is a pretty decent one.

Jack Draper, explaining how he found out he would be taking on the world number one, said: “I was about to practise. I was on the phone and I sort of looked round and I didn’t realise they were doing the draw.

"And I saw Djokovic’s name next to mine, and I turned to my coach and said, ‘I think I’m playing Djokovic here’.

“What an opportunity for me to play against the best player in the world. I’m definitely going to relish the opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it.

"To be on Wimbledon Centre Court opening the Championships with him is something that’s amazing.”
