Edmund started out winning eight of the first nine points, three aces to start the tie – that sent a message to Lopez.

Lopez has certainly picked up his game and he won’t be as easy to break in the second set.

There was only one stipulation, made by Andy Murray on Instagram earlier, on the free British tickets: those who bagged them had to make some noise.

The British Barmy Army are following that instruction to the letter, drowning out the subdued Spanish thanks to Edmund's strong start.

It’s a good hold from Edmund, you wonder if it does him a favour to have a tight game. Things were going along so perfectly but at some stage you are going to get challenged.

Nice, wide serve from Kyle Edmund to leave him with plenty of court to play with from Feliciano Lopez's short return. The Brit goes on the attack at advantage and punches Lopez beyond the baseline, landing a knockout blow with an unreturnable forehand. Important hold.

Good from Kyle Edmund, his fifth ace of the match.

He wriggles into the net but dices a volley just long. Deuce.

Feliciano Lopez is starting to pick up, he's softened the steam train-like start from Kyle Edmund somewhat. The Brit flicks one on to the tramline and, despite Lopez's challenge, it just kisses the chalk. 30-15.

Huge forehand winner from the left-handed Lopez from deep, and a fist bump in appreciation of his corner-cracking effort. But then a double fault.

Well, that's quietened the home fans...

Kyle Edmund continues in the same free-hitting style which helped him beat Mikhail Kukushkin and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Feliciano Lopez, who you will remember won the Queen's title, hasn't played in the singles this week. And it is showing.
