What a glare from Edmund! It follows a chalk-kissing, baseline-bounding forehand winner from the Brit. Delightful. And then he follows up with an even better backhand... a sweeping, winding effort that curls away from the net-hunting Lopez. Magic.

I'm a big fan of the Spanish bloke who has brought a megaphone into the Caja Magica. Makes it feel like a football atmosphere.

"Oles" ring out in Madrid. But it's Kyle Edmund who punches down a bullet-like serve that the home favourite is unable to cope with. 30-30.

Now we've got a match, exhibition stuff as Lopez dashes on to the short ball with a clean pick-up and then hammers away a volleyed winner. 15-30.

Not quite the cruise it was in the opening set so far for Kyle Edmund. Feliciano Lopez is digging his heels in like a Spanish bull, and going on the counter charge.

Edmund spins his racquet, screams down a serve and takes the Spaniard on successfully in the following rally.

It's a party between every point. A quick burst on the trumpet before every serve...

Feliciano Lopez flops a mishit drop shot into prime position for Edmund to whack away, but the Spaniard holds off the next point.

A huge "come onnnnn!" from Kyle Edmund, side-stepping into a brutal backhand winner. Love it. Feliciano Lopez responds by dashing to the net and jabbing a volley out of the Brit's reach.

Too much zip in that Kyle Edmund forehand, and Feliciano Lopez pats it long.

    The Brit holds.

Good reach from Lopez, leaning down to his right, but he can't hook it on target on the full toss. Edmund opens up and goes for a winner at 40-0, but fires wide.

It's a lively atmosphere in Madrid. That GB ticket giveaway seems to have worked a treat...

    A wrist-rattler of a serve from Kyle Edmund, followed by a wrong-footing whipped forehand winner. That's 30-0.

Take away the first three games, where Edmund was virtually perfect, and things have certainly middled up. Lopez’s serve can be awkward and pose lots of problems – he appears to have settled in.

    He's pumped.

Feliciano Lopez steams to a snappy love hold to edge back in front in this second set.

Neat net play from the veteran home player. A deft backhand from Lopez to guide it narrowly over the gauze. 40-0.

HawkEye proving that the return from Kyle Edmund had gone long whipped the Caja Magica into a frenzy for the first time this evening.

But the nerveless Briton silences them straight away. Brilliant.

Just the winner Kyle Edmund needed. Rifling a backhand down the narrowest channel and leaving Feliciano Lopez stranded. The Brit fights back to 40-30.

And then Edmund punches long with a backhand. It was called in, mind? Lopez is sure that was out, looked it to me, and Hawk Eye confirms it on the challenge.

    A mini-break for the Spaniard.

Angles. Kyle Edmund is finding them. A corking forehand that dips inside the tramline and burrows its way beyond Lopez.

But oh no... the Brit comes in to take on a volley at the net, only to wrap one into the tape.

    15-15.
