  1. DeChambeau an early moverpublished at 23:15 BST 17 June 2021

    DeChambeau -1, Matsuyama E (2)

Another grip it and rip it drive from Bryson DeChambeau down the second. This one also heads left but hugs the edge of the fairway before feeding into the middle.

And that just leaves a flicked wedge into the green. A hop, a skip and the brakes go on. Four feet for birdie... and that's a first of the day.

Hideki Matsuyama safely in for another par.

  2. DJ, Rory and Rose head outpublished at 23:12 BST 17 June 2021

Here comes the late marquee group of US Open champions...

2016 champion Dustin Johnson is first off, slightly left but in fine shape.

2011 champion Rory McIlroy pushes his right into the cabbage. All about the lie.

2013 champion Justin Rose, splits the pair and the fairway.

  3. 'Majors are what you are remembered for'published at 23:08 BST 17 June 2021

    Koepka -2 (18)

    Brooks Koepka to Sky Sports:

"One of the big things for me is this how is you are remembered by - I don't think many people can say how many regular PGA tournaments Nicklaus, Palmer, Watson all have but they know how many Majors they have.

"That's our benchmark in golf - how many Majors you win, so I'm going to just keep doing what I'm doing.

"I'm locked in from the moment I get here. I can be kind of lackadaisical, going through the motions a little bit at the regular PGA Tour events. I like when it's difficult. It's so difficult at a Major championship mentally. You've got to understand where you can miss a ball, where you can put the ball.

"At regular Tour events sometimes you can just get lazy and fire the ball right at the flag and it doesn't always end well."

    Westwood E, Cink E, Casey E (1*)

No early dramas for Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Stewart Cink as one of the big-name groups starts with pars apiece on the 10th.

  5. Postpublished at 23:02 BST 17 June 2021

    DeChambeau E, Matsuyama E, Strafaci +2 (1)

Bryson DeChambeau for birdie on the first. And there's a sight we'll see lots more this weekend, the big man wondering how on earth a putt that he has studied and analysed from every angle has not fallen into the hole.

His ball slides just by. Par it is.

Tyler Strafaci's wayward tee shot costs him a double bogey six.

We're not seeing much of Hideki Matsuyama, but he too is in for par.

  6. Wonderful start for Wallacepublished at 22:55 BST 17 June 2021

    Wallace -1 (1)

Matt Wallace quickly into the groove of things with a birdie on his opening hole.

Four Englishmen in the top 15 as it stands - Richard Bland, Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick the others.

Hatton and Fitzpatrick are in the clubhouse on one under apiece.

  7. DeChambeau chasing early birdiepublished at 22:54 BST 17 June 2021

Bryson DeChambeau, out of the bunker, is right on the money. Pin-high, 10 feet to the left.

He's playing with the Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama who has found the front edge with his second shot.

US amateur champion Tyler Strafaci completes this trio. He was way right off the tee and hacking back on to the fairway with his second.

  8. Get Involved - golfing honeymoonspublished at 22:49 BST 17 June 2021

    Westwood (22:44 BST)

Lee Westwood and new wife Helen are spending their honeymoon where? If you said Torrey Pines, you guessed right. Romance isn't dead, eh?

Of course, if Lee ends his career-long wait for a Major title, he'll face some difficult questions about which was the happiest day of his life...

Halfway through this first round then but plenty of big guns left to come.

As mentioned, reigning champion Bryson DeChambeau has just teed off to begin the defence of his title, alongside Hideki Matsuyama.

Jordan Spieth, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm all to come.

  10. DeChambeau heads down the firstpublished at 22:49 BST 17 June 2021

Bryson DeChambeau gets the defence of his title under way with a drive that is pulled a little down the left and finds a bunker.

He has vowed to use the same "bomb and gouge" tactics that proved so successful in his victory at Winged Foot back in September.

Let's see how he gets on...

  11. Hatton and Fitzpatrick left asking 'What if?'published at 22:47 BST 17 June 2021

    Hatton -1, Fitzpatrick -1, Hovland +3 (18)

Mixed rounds for both Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick come to very different ends.

A chip across the 18th green sets up a birdie chance for Hatton, which the world number nine takes to finish one under after four birdies and three bogeys.

As for Fitzpatrick, the world number 20 finds a greenside bunker en route to finishing with a bogey, his third of the day, which also featured a double bogey and six birdies.

I expect the English pair would have taken one under at the start of the day, but surely they'll ask themselves 'what if?' a few times tonight.

  12. What a shot!published at 22:38 BST 17 June 2021

    Bland -1 (1)

What a start for Richard Bland!

Second shot into the bunker? No problem, just dig it out, one bounce, straight into the hole!

  13. Mickelson and Schauffele finish uppublished at 22:37 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +4, Schauffele -2 (F)

Phil Mickelson is taking plenty of time over his third shot on the par-five ninth hole. He's only got 111 yards left but he wants to get the ball up on the back-left shelf where the hole is located.

Xander Schauffele has already played and come up short, spinning further down the slope.

From 35 feet, he races one up the slope to tap-in range. A terrific opening for the man who has never finished outside the top six at a US Open.

Mickelson, from 16 feet for a closing birdie... like so many putts today, it's stayed on the green. A tap-in par and much to do on Friday for Lefty if he wants to continue his pursuit of the Grand Slam this year.

  14. Postpublished at 22:32 BST 17 June 2021

Thus far, 90 players have either finished their rounds or are making their way around Torrey Pines. Only 12 of them are under par.

They don't make US Opens easy.

  15. Postpublished at 22:24 BST 17 June 2021

    F Molinari -3 (18)

It's been a good day for the Molinari brothers.

Francesco ends his day with a birdie to move to three under, just one shot off the lead.

  16. Molinari - 'the Major I enjoy the most'published at 22:22 BST 17 June 2021

    E Molinari -1 (18)

Edoardo Molinari speaking to Sky Sports:

"It's been good, it's been a long time [since I played a Major] and I've been looking forward to this week.

"I've been playing really solid the last few months, my putting has been a bit off but I had a decent day on the greens and it shows in the score.

"This is the Major I always enjoy the most - I like tough courses and the US open is as tough as it gets.

"I think it suits my game as well because I'm really good lately tee to green and this is a week where you have to hit fairways, greens and make a lot of pars and a few putts here and there."

  17. Fitzpatrick makes amendspublished at 22:22 BST 17 June 2021

    Hatton E, Fitzpatrick -2, Hovland +3 (17)

It's been a good day for Matt Fitzpatrick, but it could have been so much better. After putting for a third straight birdie on the 15th from 30 feet and a share of the lead, he ended up three-putting for a bogey.

But the Englishman sank a 19-foot putt on the 17th to claim a shot back.

Meanwhile, a bogey on the 16th leaves fellow Englishman Tyrrell Hatton on level par.

  18. Who's staying up through the night?published at 22:19 BST 17 June 2021

Who's in this for the long run this evening?

Lee Westwood is teeing off at 22:44 BST, the same time as Bryson DeChambeau, although they are in different groups.

Rory McIlroy is out at 23:06 and we'll be following them for as long as there is daylight on the Pacific coast of California.

Use the thumbs to let us know who's staying up.

  19. Postpublished at 22:16 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +4, Schauffele -2 (17*)

A two-putt par on the short eighth keeps Xander Schauffele right in the hunt with just the par-five ninth to play.

Phil Mickelson also takes two on the green to walk off with a par.

  20. Koepka ends on two underpublished at 22:15 BST 17 June 2021

    Morikawa +4, Koepka -2, Thomas +2 (18*)

Brooks Koepka lets a birdie opportunity slip by on the final hole to finish his day on two under.

It's a very respectable opening round but there will be a slight feeling of 'what if' given he was four under at one stage before throwing in a couple of bogeys on the back nine.

Collin Morikawa ends an erratic round with a bogey, while Justin Thomas tucks in an easy par putt for a two over score, which he will be fairly happy with, given he's been far from his best.
