Thanks for joining us for what has been a fascinating opening round of the US Open at Torrey Pines.

Louis Oosthuizen, who has two holes of his first round to complete, and Russell Henley lead the way on four under par.

But there are a whole host of top stars on their tail with two-time champion Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama and Jon Rahm all within striking distance.

It's been a tougher opening day for defending champion Bryson DeChambeau but he recovered to post a respectable two over par.

Join us right back here at 15:30 BST on Friday to see who furthers their title hopes - and who misses the cut in San Diego.

Right, let's have a look at how things stand.

Remember, the leaderboard is slightly skewed by the fact 36 players out of the 156-strong field, will have to complete their opening round on Friday - including co-leader Louis Oosthuizen.

  5. Birdie finish for McIlroypublished at 04:12 BST 18 June 2021

    McIlroy -1, D Johnson E, Rose +7 (F)

Dustin Johnson can't go at the flag from his lie in the sand, so splashes out left of the flag.

Rory McIlroy is wasting no time in lining up his birdie putt, playing out of turn, but just keen to get finished. It's in. He salutes the fans peering through the gloaming.

    Dustin Johnson takes a two-putt par and signs for a level-par 71.

Justin Rose, who has been in the water, knocks in for par and a seven-over 78.

McIlroy might owe Rose a decent cuppa for getting his drive away on the last before the hooter sounded.

    McIlroy E, D Johnson E (17)

Dustin Johnson, from the middle of the fairway, pulls his second a touch and that sends it long and into a bunker.

Rory McIlroy has left himself a decent number with his second shot, just 93 yards and he hop, skips and jumps his ball in to about seven feet and then hop, skips and jumps up to the green. The light is fading fast and he wants to get a good read on his putt.

    Rahm -2, Reed +1, Leishman +3

Jon Rahm also completes his round in time, a par on the last concluding a pleasing day that sees him finish two under.

Patrick Reed is three shots further back, while Marc Leishman has work to do from three over.

    Garcia E, Scott -1 (F)

There's about as much light left as when I was racing to complete my Sunday afternoon rounds at Silsden Golf Club way back when in the depths of winter.

Adam Scott finishes with a birdie on the 18th to get to one under and Sergio Garcia follows him in for a 70. They will feel justified in finishing up.

  9. McIlroy playing the lastpublished at 04:01 BST 18 June 2021

    McIlroy E

It appears as though Rory McIlroy did get his drive away before the hooter sounded.

Justin Rose was the first to take a swipe down the last actually and put the frighteners on Sergio Garcia who was in the middle of the 18th fairway as Rose's ball raced past him.

The Spaniard threw his hands in the air in mock disgust but he will know what Rose was up to.

Rory's ball dribbled into the rough, so it will be a lay up with his second and then hoping for a chip and a putt and a birdie to go to bed on.

  10. 'Every shot is a potential disaster'published at 04:01 BST 18 June 2021

    Bland -1 (18)

Richard Bland speaking to Sky Sports:

On his British Masters triumph at the age of 48: "The first two days were a bit of a whirlwind with all the media to do, and social media was overwhelming - the messages that I got from all over the globe really, people saying how inspired they were by it and that they were going to continue their journey. I wasn't expecting that, it's just a guy winning a golf tournament.

"I've been driving the ball great. I did at the Belfry and I did again today. There were a couple of loose ones coming in but overall, from probably five through to 13, I was splitting every fairway.

"I don't think you ever really feel comfortable in the US Open because you know every shot is a potential disaster no matter what club you've got in your hand. It's only going to firm up and, for me, I'm certainly not one of the longer hitters out there so the driver becomes even more crucial because I have to hit a very high percentage of fairways.

"But I felt very comfortable out there and I don't see why I can't continue the same way I'm doing."

    McIlroy E (17)

And that signals the end of the day's play.

Players can finish the hole they are on, or elect to mark their ball and come back and finish the next day.

We're just waiting to see if Rory McIlroy had teed off on the 18th hole. He did hole his 22-foot par putt on the 17th and I suspect he'll want to get finished if he can.

  12. DeChambeau finishes with birdiepublished at 03:55 BST 18 June 2021

    DeChambeau +2, Matsuyama -2 (F)

Up on the 18th, Bryson DeChambeau has a 51-foot eagle putt, up and over a ridge that runs through the middle of the green.

How about this for a momentum changer... the ball is on its way, up, over and down towards the hole but never threatens the hole.

Hideki Matsuyama has already flipped a wedge up on to the top shelf and he's got a 10-footer for birdie. He starts it straight at the hole but it shifts left. Par finish.

DeChambeau from five feet for a birdie. In. And that's not a disaster.

  13. Postpublished at 03:51 BST 18 June 2021

A kiss from the caddie, his wife Helen, at least for Westwood.

The newlyweds are honeymooning in California - not a bad place for it, eh?

  14. Westwood and Casey finish level parpublished at 03:50 BST 18 June 2021

    Westwood E, Casey E, Cink +2 (18)

Up and down rounds from Lee Westwood and Paul Casey end with the English pair both finishing on level par.

Westwood was one under heading into the final hole, the 9th (the group began on the 10th) but a very tame fourth shot left him a tough par putt and he bogeyed.

  15. Postpublished at 03:48 BST 18 June 2021

    McIlroy E (16)

Rory McIlroy is leaning left after hitting his tee shot down the 17th, which usually means the ball is scooting out to the right. Right into the rough.

This untidy finish is gathering pace. His second plunges into a greenside bunker. "Don't plug," he calls, somewhat hopefully, after his ball.

We'll find out soon enough... no plug but a bit of an awkward stance and he can't get close. Big par putt coming up.

  16. Postpublished at 03:45 BST 18 June 2021

    DeChambeau +3, Matsuyama -2 (17)

Up on the par-five 18th and Hideki Matsuyama is laying up short of the water guarding the green after finding a bunker with his tee shot.

Bryson DeChambeau has boomed another drive miles down the middle. He will be taking on the green in two and probably with nothing more than a 5-iron in his hand. His driving has been reasonably solid today, it's his second shots that have let him down.

Just 215 yards left for Bryson after a drive of 360 yards. That's a 7-iron folks. "Ah, it didn't draw," Bryson tells himself. He's on the green but a long way from the hole.

  17. MacIntyre finishes on level parpublished at 03:45 BST 18 June 2021

    MacIntyre E (18)

A birdie to finish for Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and he will be pleased with his opening day's work after recording a level-par round.

  18. Co-leader in trouble - but recovers superblypublished at 03:41 BST 18 June 2021

    Oosthuizen -4 (15*)

Russell Henley could well be back in the lead on his own again.

Louis Oosthuizen finds a bunker off the tee and his attempted recovery ends up well off the green on the par four seventh hole.

A par is the best he can hope for here.

He has the putter out! He's a mile off the green. Oh, what a shot. Within two feet of the hole. Simply sensational.

  19. Bogey for Rorypublished at 03:39 BST 18 June 2021

    McIlroy E, D Johnson E (16)

Rory McIlroy finds the sand off the 16th tee. His ball plugs. That makes the escape so much more tricky and he can do little more than smash out to about 15 feet.

The par putt is three inches off perfect. Bogey though and back to level par.

Dustin Johnson is on the dancefloor in one but takes two more.

  20. Postpublished at 03:38 BST 18 June 2021

    Rahm -2 (16*)

Jon Rahm has gone a bit quiet on the back nine - five successive pars after a really up and down front nine that featured birdies and bogeys galore.

He chips in within a couple of feet on the 8th green and that will be a sixth straight par. Very much in the mix, the Spaniard.
