  1. Five share early leadpublished at 18:39 BST 17 June 2021

    Wolff -2 (6*)

Matthew Wolff made a great par saver from nine feet on the 14th. He needs to repeat that on the 15th to stay in the lead on his own.

Not this time. That's a three-putt bogey from 55 feet and he slips back into a five-way tie for the lead. A five-way tie that includes England's Tyrrell Hatton.

  2. Scruffy Mickelson bogeypublished at 18:36 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +2, Schauffele -1 (4*)

Earlier in the week, Ireland's Shane Lowry said the rough around the greens was "too thick" meaning shots out of it were more about luck than skill.

We all know how great Phil Mickelson is from these kinds of situations but even he can't get closer than six feet with a chip from 25 feet. He knocks it in but it's a bogey on a par five.

Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele, who has had a trip to a greenside bunker, two putts for par from 15 feet.

    Mickelson +1 (3*)

Phil Mickelson finds his ball to the left of the 13th green. Sadly for him it's in the middle of one of the bushes. He's out with the driver, again, but this time to work out where to take relief.

When this tournament was last played here in 2008, Phil had a nightmare on this hole, watching three successive chips come up short and trundle back to his feet as he posted a nine!

Back to 2021 and he finds a decent spot to drop. It's almost the perfect wedge, straight at the flag. So straight that it smashes into the flagstick and spins backwards into thick rough.

Lefty is not impressed with that.

  4. Bogey for Molinaripublished at 18:25 BST 17 June 2021

    Lowry +2, F. Molinari -1, Stenson -1

It's Francesco Molinari's putter that lets him down this time, dropping a shot on the par-four fifth, while Shane Lowry recovers by claiming par with Henrik Stenson.

  5. Postpublished at 18:24 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +1

What can Phil Mickelson do from the collar of the rough? He's out with a big-looking club, perhaps a 2-wood. He purses his lips as he watches his ball scoot out to the left and into some scrubland and prickly-looking bushes.

  6. Triple bogey for Lowrypublished at 18:21 BST 17 June 2021

    Lowry +2, F. Molinari -2, Stenson -1

Francesco Molinari claims his second birdie of the day on the par-four fourth, but it's a nightmare for Shane Lowry.

The 2019 Open winner takes a penalty stroke after hitting it into the rough from the tee then three putts before tapping in for a triple bogey. The Irishman slips to two-over par.

  7. Birdie for Fleetwoodpublished at 18:20 BST 17 June 2021

    Wolff -3, Fleetwood E (5*)

Matthew Wolff has got a swing that has probably baffled most coaches. He has this weird little right-hip twist before he takes his club back and then an almost helicopter twizzle at the top of his backswing.

His drive on the 14th leaks out to the right and he can only hack his second on to the front edge of the green, 40 feet from the hole.

And he overhits his birdie attempt, leaving a nine-footer coming back for par. The lightening-fast US Open greens can do that to you. Nerveless from Wolff though. Par.

Tommy Fleetwood is playing with Wolff. He rolls in an 11-footer for birdie to cancel out his bogey on the 11th.

  8. Postpublished at 18:17 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +1, Schauffele -1 (3*)

"I'm going to hit a rip high cut," says Phil Mickelson as he prepares to hit his drive on the 615-yard par-five 13th.

I don't think he hit that quite where he wanted it. "Darn it," says the 51-year-old San Diego native who grew up playing countless rounds at Torrey Pines. It's in the first cut and he might still have a chance of chasing one up.

Xander Schauffele hits the near-perfect drive, 320 yards over a bunker down the left.

  9. Birdie for Fitzpatrickpublished at 18:13 BST 17 June 2021

    Hatton -2, Fitzpatrick -1, Hovland -1

Tyrrell Hatton goes close with a seven-footer to birdie the fourth but it's another comfortable par for the Englishman.

Matt Fitzpatrick's approach shot leaves him 19 feet from the hole, and he makes it to move back to one under par.

  10. Postpublished at 18:13 BST 17 June 2021

    Koepka -1, Morikawa +2, Thomas E (4*)

Up on the par-five 13th, Brooks Koepka taps in for par. He found a greenside bunker in two and got too much action on his escape, his ball spinning 25 feet from the hole.

Justin Thomas is also in for par, holing a curling 15-footer to rapturous applause.

Collin Morikawa, from slightly closer in to get a shot back. The groans speak volumes. Par.

  11. Birdie for Schauffelepublished at 18:10 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +1, Schauffele -1 (3*)

Phil Mickelson's radar is a little out on the par-four 12th. From the middle of the fairway his ball finds the centre of the green, but the flag is at the back on top of a ridge. Lefty's ball trundles back towards the front edge.

Xander Schauffele is also on the fairway and he's a little stronger with his approach, finding the top step of the green and leaving himself a 12-footer for birdie. Straight in the middle.

Mickelson has already given his third a good hit up the hill but he's now got a slippery four-footer coming back...makes it.

  12. Wolff takes early leadpublished at 18:03 BST 17 June 2021

    Wolff -3 (4*)

Matthew Wolff is eating up Torrey Pines right now. He's on the par-five 13th green in two and eye-balling a 45-footer for eagle.

The American doesn't get the line quite right but a straightforward four-footer for birdie sees him take the outright lead.

  13. Postpublished at 17:58 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +1, Schauffele E (2*)

Xander Schauffele, fresh from parring the first, finds the left side of the green on the par-three 11th, his second of the day. The flag is over on the right though...

Phil Mickelson is a little unfortunate to see his ball pull up on the front edge of the green. From 50 feet, his ball pulls up half a dozen short. Great par saver.

Schauffele's 40-footer across the green also leaves a tester for par but he too is in the hole in par.

  14. Par for Hattonpublished at 17:54 BST 17 June 2021

    Hatton -2, Fitzpatrick E, Hovland -1

Tyrrell Hatton rolls it down the hill on the third. He's put a little too much on it though and the Englishman taps in from a foot for a comfortable par.

  15. Birdie for Koepkapublished at 17:54 BST 17 June 2021

    Koepka -1, Morikawa +2, Thomas E (3*)

Brooks Koepka is up and running with a birdie on the 12th, holing from 20 feet.

But Collin Morikawa is moving in the opposite direction, with a second bogey of the day.

Justin Thomas continues to deal in pars.

  16. Birdies for Hatton and Hovlandpublished at 17:43 BST 17 June 2021

    Hatton -2, Fitzpatrick E, Hovland -1

Viktor Hovland isn't far from the hole but has to chip out of thick rough at the back of the second green. But the Norwegian does it superbly and it rolls in for a birdie.

And Tyrrell Hatton strokes it in from nine feet to make it two birdies from two and take an early share of the lead. What a start by the in-form Englishman, who finished in a tie for second at the Palmetto Championship last week.

Matt Fitzpatrick gets it all wrong on the green though and comes away from the par-four second with a bogey.

  17. Birdie for Armitagepublished at 17:42 BST 17 June 2021

    Armitage -1 (4*)

Marcus Armitage's solid start to the week continues with a first birdie on the 613-yard par-five 13th.

    That has followed three pars.

  18. Wolff makes fast startpublished at 17:40 BST 17 June 2021

    Wolff -2 (3*)

Matthew Wolff is our current leader after a couple of early birdies. The American has also started on the 10th and has just rolled in from a couple of feet on the par-four 12th after a sensational iron into the green.

  19. Bogey for Leftypublished at 17:38 BST 17 June 2021

    Mickelson +1 (1*)

Phil Mickelson, black cap, black shirt, silver grey trousers, aviator shades in place, is facing a tricky par-saver on the 10th after tugging his second shot into a greenside bunker.

He can only escape from that to about 12 feet. His ball is right on line, horseshoes right round the hole though to ooooohs from the crowd. Bogey start.

  20. Englishmen start wellpublished at 17:32 BST 17 June 2021

    Hatton -1, Fitzpatrick -1, Hovland E

Englishmen Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick are under way, playing in a group with Norway's Viktor Hovland.

And both get off to a fine start with a birdie on the first, Hatton confidently stroking in while Fitzpatrick's effort just drops.

Both played their second shots from out of a fairway bunker, Hatton's effort clattering in to the flagstick.
