What do you do if you really want to play in the FA People's Cup but don't have a team?

If you are 6Music radio DJ Chris Hawkins, you do what you do best. Broadcast it to the nation and see what happens.

Seeing this as his chance to get back into football after years of good intentions, Chris recognised that he'd probably need some talent on the team if he had any chance on the pitch.

After a call out to the public on his morning show and on social media, six players were selected, a manager was engaged in the form of Rochdale's Jimmy McNulty and the Hawks were ready to rock. Or play. Well, let's hope they are ready to play.

They are competing this afternoon in Manchester. We'll keep you posted on their progress...

  9. The "I" in "Team"published at 11:17

And here's a nice tale from one of the gents taking part yesterday.....

As you may or may not know, you don’t have to be in a team to sign up to the FA People’s Cup. The FA has been arranging for individuals without teams to together wherever possible.

One of these “individual” players is Paul Baker who played in the first ever FA People's Cup last year, signing up to the veterans category in Manchester.

I saw the FA People's Cup advertised on Match of the Day and because it was an FA tournament I really wanted to play. I couldn't get a team together but I knew I had to play in it. It was such a big deal and I didn't want to miss out so I signed up as an individual.

Action shot of Paul Baker playing in 5-a-side match

Despite not making the final, Paul loved it so much last year that came back for more in 2016, again as an individual. Unfortunately, his team missed out of qualifying for the semis by missing one goal, but we get the feeling we haven’t seen the last of Paul Baker.
