  9. Match Report: Grassroots football at it's finestpublished at 14:39

    Emdad Rahman reports from Newham

Here's another match report - thanks Emdad!

The boys played like warrior poets. The level of skill, determination and guts we displayed blew our opponents away. Don't forget Team Legend had plenty of guile and know how and we used this to great effect; drawing teams in, hitting on the counter and sometimes simply bamboozling them with dinks, feints and drop of the shoulders. Then there were the surprising bursts of pace and swashbuckling goals.

We had turned into a cavalier team with guts of fire. It wasn't Total Football, nor samba, but we were pretty good nevertheless.

12th October, 1980 will forever live in my memory. I was 25, playing football and about to catch the ball from a corner when I collided with another player. 16 operations and 20 years later, I now have a titanium knee.

I loved playing football. Back then though it's not like what it is now, other people would say that's not right, girls shouldn’t be seen playing football. I'm so happy to see it’s not the same these days. It took me a while to get back into the game after that accident. It's like a grieving process when it's been such a big part of your life. Slowly but surely I got back into it and now I'm coaching boys and girls and playing walking football! It’s a revolution that I'm privileged to be part of.

People I know were unsure to begin with, but I thought it would be a laugh. We now train - I say 'train,' that sounds very professional, I mean we have a kick about - and people come to watch! How great is that? Because we are not too bad, people want to watch us play!

Walking football is different to football. It's more about your touch and your technique. Obviously it's not about running about. Just give it a go it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Better than any medication a doctor can give you.”

Jan was talking to the Get Inspired team ahead of her game today in Hull. You can hear more about Jan's experience of Walking Football on the BBC Get Inspired site in the coming weeks.
