It’s hard to tell from so far away how the Commonwealth Games is being received during a frenetic period of sport in the UK. It’s fair to say though there’s a pride in the event here from the hosts.

Breakfast TV stations are wall to wall with coverage, interviewing medal winners galore and hyping the coverage to come.

The front page of local paper ‘The Sunday Mail’ points to Cate Campbell, who won 50m freestyle gold last night.

The page reads: “Two years ago she almost walked away from swimming. Now the Queensland superstar sits on top of the world. She’s our very own...”

    Cate Campbell

And inside there is story after story about the Games. This one catches my eye as it’s about the venue I’m heading to for the next 10 hours - the beach volleyball.

The story says that holidaymakers on Coolongatta Beachfront have saved a few quid by renting high rise flats, so they can see straight into the arena.

    Nice work.
