People are dotted on the beach. The bus driver was chatting away to me telling me that the biggest shopping centre on Gold Coast has said their visitor numbers have fallen 65% during the Games.

Apparently television channels were flooded with fear stories about traffic during the Games and hence not only have locals left the area for a few weeks but the usual tourists who come for a break have swerved it too. The result? Relatively traffic-free roads and sparsely populated beaches.

These are the poshest seats in the house, reserved for VVIP buttocks.

I believe they might have been the perch from which Prince Charles and Camilla watched the opening ceremony. Maybe they are a little too comfy because a jet-lagged Camilla has caught a bit of flak in the local press for apparently kicking back and flicking through the programme during the speeches., external

"Incredibly frustrated. We didn't take our chances, we weren't on it. It's just not good enough, we're much better than that," Hinch told BBC Sport after the defeat to India.

"We need to put this anger and frustration into the Malaysia game because we can still top this Pool.

"We have to kill sides early and we're not doing that at the moment.

"We haven't go time to dwell on this now and we have to now focus on Malaysia."

    Carrara Stadium

    Welcome to Carrara Stadium.

You may have caught a peek at this 35,000-capacity venue on Wednesday when it hosted the opening ceremony. But through the dark and rain of that night you may have missed it 'explosion-in-a paint-factory' colour sheme.

Complete with a flouncy roof on one of the stands, it looks like the sort of thing that Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen might have revealed to a mortified suburban couple on Changing Rooms.

Normally home to the Gold Coast Suns, the Aussie Rules tenants have upped sticks to Townsville and the Commonwealth Games organisers have slapped down a track on bits of the oval that are usually the reserve of big men in short shorts.

Today is the first day of sporting action and everything is looking box-fresh. Action starts at 05:00 BST.

Prince Charles is getting some really positive press here following a speech at Government House on Friday.

This is his seventh visit to the state of Queensland and the local headline reads: “The wisdom of Prince Charming.”

A witty snippet above catches the eye but the paper carries his whole speech which touched on climate change and the need to sustain human jobs rather than switch to automation.

“The dignity of human work and interaction is essential to our wellbeing,” said the Prince of Wales.
