It's actually a mistake from Wyndham Clark with his approach as he tugs it right and watches it run off to the side of the green - a good 30 yards from the pin.

Similar result for Gary Woodland but he's far more unlucky as his shot looked ideal to set up an eagle shout only for it to land on the slope and trundle off the back.

Jon Rahm's birdie putt burns the edge of the third hole. Another par ticked off though and that's 21 holes without dropping a shot.

Jordan Spieth's effort from 35 feet misses by two inches, while Justin Rose rolls in a four-footer to also make par.Nine pars out of nine for these three so far today.

Hole five is playing as the easiest on the course and it's where Wyndham Clark separated himself from the field last night with a stunning eagle.

Something similar today would be a real statement.

Smoking his drive straight down the fairway is a good start.

Two birdies in three holes for Max McGreevy as he joins the group on second place on three under in what is the 31-year-old's US Open debut.

McGreevy really fought for his place in the field as he came through final qualifying only through an eight-man play-off in Canada. And he's making the most of it.

The par-four third is playing 513 yards today. All three players take more than 300 yards off that with their drives into the centre of the fairway but none can threaten the pin with their second shots.

Jon Rahm is closest but his ball is about 30 feet away after clinging on to the right edge of the green.

Ryder Cowan has been almost shot perfect so far, but the first real big mistake comes at the eighth as he goes long over the back of the green - we've spoken already about how on some holes you just can't do that, and this is one of those holes.

His chip back on is poor and he's left with a long par putt that he can't convert so it's a bogey, his first of the day and third of the tournament, to slip back to two under. The young amateur will learn from that one.

An unforced error on the 12th leads to a bogey for Bob MacIntyre.

He finds the centre of the fairway off the tee, but from 180 yards his second shot finishes short of the green and he takes three more from there, missing a nine-footer for par.

There's a huge roar at Shinnecock Hills as crowd fabvourite Justin Thomas pours in a birdie from 15 feet on the 13th. He's only level par for the tournament but that's a rousing start.

Oh no! Bryson DeChambeau has come undone at Shinnecock Hills as he cards back-to-back double bogeys - and out of nothing really as well.

Again he's just short of the green with nothing really difficult but again his short game lets him down as it's another poor effort that leaves him 17 feet from the hole for par.

And, again, not only does he miss but he leaves four feet for bogey, which he misses! This is quite incredible for a golfer of his talent as he's taken eight shots on the past two holes for two rather simple up and downs.

Including missing putts of five feet and four feet - rancid stuff from the two-time US Open champion.

Lovely shot from Dustin Johnson onto the fourth green to set up 10 feet for birdie. Can he capitalise? Sadly not. The tall American lopes after his ball and closes out a par.

It's a missed opportunity for Wyndham Clark as he misreads his birdie putt from 20 feet and leaves a nervy five-footer for par. It has a little run around the lid but drops into the cup.

Meanwhile, Gary Woodland's topsy-turvy round continues. He finds the rough off the tee, takes two to reach the green and ends up with a second bogey of the day.

Jon Rahm is wayward off the tee on the short second. I write short, it's a 262-yard par-three hole today.

He splashes out of a greenside bunker but will have to make a 15-footer to avoid dropping his first shot of the championship.

Justin Rose, out of the same bunker, almost holes his attempt. He'll have an 18-incher for par.

Here's Rahm... centre of the cup, keeps the momentum.

Jordan Spieth found the green and took two putts from nearly 60 feet to also write a three on the card.

A regulation par for Bob Mac on the par-three 11th, his second hole.

But it was two inches from being a brace of birdies to begin. The Scot put a good roll on his second shot after finding himself 27 feet from the hole with his tee shot.

Lengthy birdie putts for the leading trio at the third.

Dustin Johnson gives his 62-footer a thwack but it keeps on rolling and leaves him 13-and-a-half feet coming back. He can't convert - and drops a shot.

It's tidier from both Gary Woodland and Wyndham Clark to get within three feet and they settle for pars.

Pretty similar approach to the third as Matt Fitzpatrick from Bryson DeChambeau, and a pretty similar chip to - a poor one that's 30 feet short, but unlike the Englishman he can't save himself with a long par putt.

Not only that, he leaves himself five feet for a bogey, which he also misses as he has to stick a double down.

All three find the heart of the green with their approach shots and it's Jon Rahm, who is first to go with his birdie try.

It's tracking nicely but dies away to the right at the end. Jordan Spieth was interested in that but his effort from 20 feet suffers the same fate.

Here's Justin Rose from 15 feet... it's the closest of the three, but another par.

Take a bow Matt Fitzpatrick! After coming up short of the green again on the third, while his chip on the last was brilliant this was clunky and heavy handed, leaving him with well over 30 feet to save par.

But in she goes! It's tracking all the way and drops into the cup perfectly - back-to-back up and downs for Fitzpatrick but in vastly different fashion. No picgtures on the scorecard and all that...

It's been a terrific start to day two for Chile's Joaquin Niemann who has opened with birdies at the first and the second.

That does however only get him back to the score he ought to be at, having been docked two shots by USGA for throwing his club on the sixth hole in round one.
