Justin Thomas is 'on a heater' as they say, with back-to-back birdies making it three in six holes as he marches onto two under and creeping up that leaderboard.

JT will be hoping for the wind to blow as there aren't too many players with a better range of shot shapes than the two-time US PGA Championship winner.

The par-five fifth is playing the easiest hole this week, so far.

And Justin Rose, Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth take advantage by picking up birdies.

Rose nudges in from a couple of feet after mis-reading a 25-footer for eagle. But that's two on the trot to get the Englishman into the red figures.

Rahm rolls in a five-footer to get back to where he started the day, while Spieth's 10-footer keeps him interested.

Three birdies and no bogeys so far today for William Mouw, who finds himself tied for second place in the US Open on just his second appearance in the tournament.

The 25-year-old came through the same qualifying event as Max McGreevy in Canada - and also came through that eight-man play-off to grab one of three spots in the field.

Another chance goes begging for Wyndham Clark at seven and this is unlucky as half his ball seems to disappear into the hole before clinging to the edge and staying up.

He could be five or six shots clear by now, but the good news for the rest of the field is he's yet to pull away.

Handy having a three-shot lead nonetheless.

More trouble for Gary Woodland - and it's another shot gone.

What better way to atone for a bogey than getting that shot right back on the next hole. Solid drive, attacking second to 10 feet and the putt drained.

He needs to build on the momentum.

While Bryson DeChambeau is making birdies and bogeys (and doubles) Matt Fitzpatrick is parring his way around Shinnecock Hills today with seven in a row to start his second round.

It's been a good round from Aaron Rai today after his tricky +4 on day one.

The US PGA champ is two under through eight and making his way up the leaderboard.

Another bogey for Bob Mac after another misjudged second shot, albeit coming out of the rough.

The wind isn't as strong as it was on Thursday but it's clearly playing a role.

Also tricky are the false fronts on 14 of the 18 greens. The Scot finishes just off the front on the 14th and takes three from 50 feet.

"Wow," breathes Dustin Johnson as his putt comes up one revolution short of dropping into the cup.

That's about as expressive as we get from the languid American.

For a moment, Wyndham Clark's par putt looks like it's drifting away but it holds its line and falls in.

Gary Woodland nudges it close from 33 feet to stop his run of consecutive bogeys.

I wonder if the slightly slower greens are catching out some of the players.

Jon Rahm flicks his wedge from short of the fourth on to the green and can only chuckle to himself as the ball pulls up six feet short. Another tester to keep his bogey-free streak going.

He stemmed the bleeding at the fifth with a birdie - almost an eagle - but has immediately gifted that shot back to Shinnecock.

Plenty of work to do over his remaining 12 holes to make the weekend.

A mistake from Jon Rahm on the par-four fourth with his approach to the green. He's only got 120 yards or so but he blames the wind as his ball comes up 10 yards short of the flag and spins back off the green.

Justin Rose is on the dancefloor in two though and has left himself a 12-footer for birdie.

It's missed by Wyndham Clark - his putter has been so good recently but he's pushed that from seven feet.

Pars for his playing partner Dustin Johnson too.

Gary Woodland pays the price for having to chip on again and loses another shot.

Golf ain't fair is it.

Gary Woodland hit a much better approach than Wyndham Clark but ended up in a much worse spot.

And his chip onto the green doesn't quite reach the flat bit and comes rolling back to his feet.

Clark on the other hand has judged his nicely to set up a promising birdie chance.

It's a par for Robert MacIntyre on the 13th. A bit of a missed opportunity for the Scot after pummelling his drive to within 100 yards of the hole.

His wedge is flicked right over the pin but the ball doesn't spin back as much as he'd have hoped and he takes two swipes with the flatstick from 18 feet.
