Jordan Spieth wants that career Grand Slam!

After a delightful approach into the sixth, he rolls in the birdie putt and joins the leaders at three under.

Contrasting fortunes for the man who became a Slam winner just over a year ago, however, as Rory McIlroy gives the shot he gained on the previous hole right back after another missed fairway.

    His frustrating day continues.

  2. Theegala well in touchpublished at 18:02 BST 14 May

    Theegala -2 (17*)

Sahith Theegala has had a quietly efficient round so far today with three birdies and one bogey putting him on two under and just one shot off the lead as he tees off on the ninth, which is his final hole of the day.

It's a par five and he's hit the fairway off the tee so he'll hope to pick up a shot to sign off in style.

  3. Higgo pleads his casepublished at 17:59 BST 14 May

    Higgo -1 (69)

Garrick Higgo, who was given a two-stroke penalty earlier for being late to the tee for his 07:18 (12:18 BST) tee-time, has just been pleading his case in the clubhouse.

TV pictures have shown Higgo talking with PGA officials after handing over his scorecard following a one-under round of 69.

The South African has his arms folded and does not look best pleased with what he is being told. That, perhaps, suggest the punishment stands.

    Brown -2 (17)

Dan Brown is holding himself together nicely, chipping out of the front bunker on the 16th to save his par.

The Englishman follows up by zipping in to around six feet on the 241-yard par-three 17th to set up a birdie chance that he can't convert.

That goes down as a missed opportunity to get back up into a tie for second.

    Gabriele +7 (77)

Chris Gabriele, who is a PGA head professional by day and a wedding singer by night was one of the early starters.

The 30-year-old, who is from New York and making his debut at the US PGA Championship loves a bit of Frank Sinatra and Billy Joel.

He even sang after his own nuptials so he knows a little bit about performing under pressure but I wonder what he'll be belting out this evening.

Maybe 'The Best Is Yet to Come' after two double bogeys and a triple-bogey seven on the 10th - where he found the water - contributed to a score of seven-over par.

  6. MW Lee claims leadpublished at 17:45 BST 14 May

    MW Lee -4 (16*)

Min Woo Lee moves to four under with two holes of his round left.

The Australian rolls in a putt from 13 feet for a birdie at the seventh before briefly acknowledging the crowd.

He looks laser-focused on a strong finish.

  7. Postpublished at 17:45 BST 14 May

    Jaeger -3 (16)

Stephan Jaeger has a 10-foot putt coming up for a share of the lead on the 16th.

The German pushes that left and is hoping it'll turn but no, it looks like a slight misread there.

  8. McIlroy bounces backpublished at 17:44 BST 14 May

    McIlroy E, Rahm E, Spieth -2 (14*)

    Oh how he needed that!

Rory McIlroy's shot into the par-three fifth is a good 30 feet short, but he steps up and rams his birdie putt in!

Good thing the hole got in the way there, that ball was really travelling.

Jordan Spieth continues to thrill the crowd, too. He knocks one into three feet and makes no mistake to move back to two under.

  9. Schauffele moves within onepublished at 17:38 BST 14 May

    Schauffele -2, Koepka -1, Hatton +1 (14*)

Two brilliant shots into the par-three fifth from Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka.

Schauffele makes his birdie putt, but Koepka misses from four feet! Deary me, what a chance that was.

  10. 'Been a whirlwind' - Fitzpatrickpublished at 17:38 BST 14 May

    A Fitzpatrick +2 (72)

England's Alex Fitzpatrick speaking to Sky Sports about his opening two-over 70 after a hectic first few weeks on the PGA Tour: "It's been a whirlwind. I still can’t wrap my head around it. I feel like I’ve not had any rest to digest what has happened. Every step I take I’m just trying to go with it. It’s been pretty crazy!

"I feel like my game suits when the courses are harder. I feel I am starting to drive the ball really well, which is really important on these tough courses. If you hit it a little off line, you can get punished. I’m just trying to take it one step at a time and just enjoy it."

On his relationship with big brother Matt: "He might start getting fed up of being called Alex’s brother soon! It’s amazing to spend time with him. I didn’t have many opportunities growing up to do so as he was always at tournaments and I was elsewhere, so it’s nice to be able to be with him."

  11. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 17:37 BST 14 May

    McIlroy +1, Rahm E, Spieth -1 (13*)

Now then. The frustration is starting to show for Rory McIlroy as he thumps the tee box with his driver in anger after slicing one into the rough on the fourth.

He comes up well short with his second and then plays a clumsy pitch that fails to advance past the ridge and trundles back down the slope to 30 feet. The par putt misses and that's an untidy bogey.

  12. Back-to-back bogeys for Abergpublished at 17:32 BST 14 May

    DeChambeau +4, Aberg +1, Fowler E (14*)

Oh dear, another bogey for Ludvig Aberg as his round just starts to slip away from him a bit - going from one under to one over in the blink of an eye.

It's generally scrappy stuff as after going from rough to rough on the fourth it's a three-putt bogey on the fifth from 40 feet away - that's a killer for the pros in the majors.

Bryson DeChambeau has steadied the ship from a rough front nine but has not managed to pick up any shots yet with five straight pars.

Nothing doing for Rory but still within 3 of the lead with 60 holes to play. You can’t win it on Thursday but you can for aure lose it. Tha whole group is playing good, solid stuff, and all are very much still in the golf tournament!

  14. Birdie for Hattonpublished at 17:26 BST 14 May

    Schauffele -1, Koepka -1, Hatton +1 (13*)

    Brooks KoepkaImage source, Getty Images

Brooks Koepka's long game has been wonderful today. He's giving himself so many chances on the greens but the birdie putts are mostly staying above ground.

Patience is key at majors, though, and he knows that better than anyone as a five-time winner.

Tyrrell Hatton is battling well though. Three over early on, he's just made another birdie to move back to one over.

  15. Nothing doing for Rorypublished at 17:21 BST 14 May

    McIlroy E, Rahm E, Spieth -1 (12*)

Rory McIlroy is starting to look a bit flustered now as he miscalculates his latest birdie putt after a precise approach from the rough set up a good chance.

He runs his putt a good four feet past but rolls in the return effort for par.

Pars for Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm, too.

  16. Fitz finishes with a 72published at 17:18 BST 14 May

    Fitzpatrick +2 (72)

Alex Fitzpatrick finishes up his first round at the US PGA Championship with a two-over 72 - which is not too bad for just his second ever major and first outside of the UK.

He played pretty nicely apart from a three-hole spell where he went double bogey-bogey-bogey to undo a lot of the hard work he'd put in earlier in the round.

All in all though not a bad start and plenty to build on for tomorrow.

  17. MW Lee claims share of leadpublished at 17:15 BST 14 May

    MW Lee -3 (14*)

What a shot that is. Min Woo Lee zips into two feet on the par-three fifth to give himself the easiest of putts for a share of the lead. Brilliant from the Australian.

  18. Schauffele slips backpublished at 17:13 BST 14 May

    Schauffele -1, Koepka -1, Hatton +2 (12*)

Xander Schauffele has mixed some lovely play with sloppy moments today and it's a case of the latter at the third as he drops his third shot of the round after missing the fairway and green in regulation.

  19. Bogey for Brownpublished at 17:08 BST 14 May

    Brown -2 (14)

Dan Brown finds the 14th green off the tee but when he shunts a long birdie putt nearly eight feet past it sets up a tricky return that he can't make.

  20. Spieth drops backpublished at 16:59 BST 14 May

    McIlroy E, Rahm E, Spieth -1 (11*)

After the excitement whipped up by Jon Rahm's hole-out eagle, Jordan Spieth three-putts for his first bogey of the day and slips two shots off the lead.

Rory McIlroy - a bit like his opening round at Quail Hollow last week - can't get off the par train. Nine in a row for the world number two and he remains level par.
