  2. Bogey for Bhatiapublished at 20:34 BST 14 May

    Bhatia -2 (10)

After a flawless front nine, Akshay Bhatia suffers a lapse in concentration as he finds the left rough with a bit of a slice off the 10th tee, and he can only advance the ball 100-odd yards before wedging on and two-putting for a five.

  3. Young birdies sixthpublished at 20:33 BST 14 May

    Young -1, Bradley E, Thomas -2 (6)

Routine pars all round for American trio Cameron Young, Keegan Bradley and Justin Thomas on the fifth hole.

Close but no cigar for Thomas on the green at the sixth.as his putt comes up a foot short of a birdie and he has to settle for par.

Young, however, drains a 22-footer to go back to one under.

  4. Steady stuff from returning Sullivanpublished at 20:32 BST 14 May

    Sullivan -1 (3)

Great to see Andy Sullivan back on a major championship stage after five years away from the game's four biggest tournaments.

The PGA of America extended a special invite to the 2016 Ryder Cupper and he's made a strong start with a couple of pars to back up an opening birdie.

The four-time DP World Tour winner is 38 now. It'd be some story if he shows up some of the more illustrious names in the field.

  5. Bogey for Hovlandpublished at 20:31 BST 14 May

    Hovland +3, Morikawa -1, Lowry E (7)

    Viktor HovlandImage source, Getty Images

A brilliant 25-footer from Shane Lowry saves par on the seventh, which Collin Morikawa matches with far less stress as he almost holed a 40-footer for birdie to leave a tap-in four.

Viktor Hovland isn't so good here though, finding the rough off the tee and needing to just punch it out. A third to the green isn't anywhere near close enough to stand a chance of saving par.

  6. Fitzpatrick saves parpublished at 20:30 BST 14 May

    Scheffler +1, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose +1 (5)

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

The wind has definitely picked up for the afternoon starters, which means the greens are drying out and getting a tad firmer.

And it appears to be playing tricks with one or two as Matt Fitzpatrick ends up leaving himself 10 feet short after a loose tee shot gives him an initial putt from nearly 70 feet.

The Englishman knocks that in beautifully to keep a clean card and it's pars all around. Again.

  7. Putnam in the mixpublished at 20:27 BST 14 May

    Putnam -2 (9*)

American Andrew Putnam has put together a really solid opening nine holes. Playing the tougher back nine first at Aronimink, Putnam hasn't put a foot wrong with a bogey-free 33 seeing him turn in two under and just a shot off the lead.

  8. Gotterup joins Bob and Tommypublished at 20:19 BST 14 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre +1, Fleetwood +1 (6)

For Tommy Fleetwood to contend this week, his putter simply has to behave, but he's let a good chance slip through the net on the par-four sixth as he burns the left edge from 12 feet.

Chris Gotterup, who has already won twice on the PGA Tour this year, rolls in a much-needed birdie to join Fleetwood and Bob MacIntyre on one-over.

  9. Bogey for Schefflerpublished at 20:18 BST 14 May

    Scheffler +1, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose +1 (4)

Justin Rose's decision to change clubs recently hasn't yielded immediate results but a laser-guided iron shot gives him a birdie chance only for his putt to go astray from seven feet.

And a collector's item from Scottie Scheffler who flies the green and is then heavy-handed as he tries to get up and down.

The American finds himself putting from 30 feet and his run of 42 bogey-free holes in majors comes to an end

A bit of evidence about the course's difficulty so far today.

No wonder the world's best are finding it tricky.

  12. 'Have you seen the course?'published at 20:14 BST 14 May

    Rahm -1 (69)

Fair to say Jon Rahm was not impressed by the journalist who asked him if he was surprised that the scoring had not been better so far in round one.

"People thought it would be lower?" he replied. "Have you been out there? Have you seen the golf course?"

Rahmbo scored under par on only three holes today, one an eagle where he holed out from 100 yards, another a chip from off the green and then finally a tap-in birdie at the last.

Aronimink Golf Club has shown some bite today.

  13. Bhatia joins the leaderspublished at 20:14 BST 14 May

    Bhatia -3 (9)

Akshay Bhatia continues his fine round as the left-hander rolls in a birdie putt on the ninth to join the leaders on three under.

It's been a flawless front nine by the 24-year-old, who famously opted not to go the traditional college golf route in America and instead turned professional in 2019 right after high school aged just 17.

What's notable about this young man is his character, as shown by all three of his PGA Tour wins coming via play-offs - including this year's Arnold Palmer Invitational - showing he can hold his nerve when the pressure's on.

  14. Promising from Thomaspublished at 20:13 BST 14 May

    Young E, Bradley E, Thomas -2 (4)

    Justin ThomasImage source, Getty Images

An impressive start to the round by Justin Thomas as he picks up another birdie on the par-four fourth.

The two-time PGA champion's iron shot to get on the green is immaculate and he duly slides in a putt from 10 feet.

Meanwhile, Cam Young is back down to even par after a bogey while a birdie for Keegan Bradley cancels out his earlier bogey.

  15. Spieth on 'diabolical' Aronimink pinspublished at 20:13 BST 14 May

    Spieth -1 (69)

    Jordan SpiethImage source, Getty Images

Jordan Spieth on the tough pins at Aronimink: "We kind of knew that was going to be the case coming in, and they definitely did that. They give you kind of an easier start on the first hole, on number one, and from there it got kind of diabolical."

And on his first round as he continues his bid to win the Grand Slam: "It's one of those rounds where I feel like I played better than I scored, which is frustrating because you want to get the most out of your round. It's also a good thing, which means things are in a good spot."

  16. Hovland horseshoepublished at 20:09 BST 14 May

    Hovland +2, Morikawa +1, Lowry E (6)

Viktor Hovland has the chance to grab a shot back on the sixth as he leaves himself with a short birdie putt after a neat wedge in, but the ball does a big horseshoe around the edge of the cup and stays out.

Collin Morikawa and Shane Lowry play similar shots but get different results as they both drain their birdie putts.

  18. Bogey for Rosepublished at 20:00 BST 14 May

    Scheffler E, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose +1 (3)

Nothing quite happening for this stellar grouping yet and now Scottie Scheffler skips through the back of the third green.

He judges a delicate chip back down the slope with superb precision and taps in for his par from no more than three feet.

Matt Fitzpatrick's approach finds the back ledge and trickles down but his birdie putt strays right and misses the cup by no more than a ball width.

Justin Rose's task is all the more difficult as he pumps his iron shot left to give himself a tough putt across an undulating surface from 50 feet. The Englishman's ball wanders a good six or seven feet past and he can't salvage the situation.

  20. Morikawa bounces back as Hovland strugglespublished at 19:47 BST 14 May

    Hovland +2, Morikawa E, Lowry +1 (4)

Collin Morikawa has already had a look at a couple of lengthy putts and now he drains a 30-footer up the slope to get back to level par.

No such luck for Viktor Hovland, who is punished for missing the green with his second. He then watches his pitch back on run and run after he misses his landing spot to leave a par putt from 36 feet.
