Norway's Viktor Hovland throws away the shot he's just worked so hard to get back.

His tee shot comes up way short on the par-three and when he races his chip - from the thicker stuff just off the edge of the green - way past the flag, he's in trouble.

Unlike Collin Morikawa, who plays into 10 feet and rolls in for birdie.

  2. Birdie for MacIntyrepublished at 23:37 BST 14 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre -1, Fleetwood +2 (15)

Robert MacIntyre is poised to finish well here.

The Scot picks up a valuable birdie with a putt from 12 feet on the par-five 15th.

Tommy Fleetwood comes up a few inches short with a birdie of his own.

The 2010 champion Martin Kaymer has been speaking to Sky Sports after his excellent round of 67: "The last few years, I haven't played well. I have had a lot of injuries but when I've been able to practise, I have felt I was trending in the right direction.

"I've enjoyed the test here- it's a really fair test. I stayed in it and it was a stress-free round. It was very enjoyable.

On his biggest motivations: "On Tuesday night, at the Champions Dinner, I got asked by one of the guys from the PGA of America if I still played. I'm playing this week! That really motivated me.

"I want to compete in all the tournaments I play in. I have put myself in a good position - there are three very difficult days ahead so I'll see where it goes.

  4. Hovland pulls back a strokepublished at 23:34 BST 14 May

    Hovland +2, Morikawa E, Lowry -1 (16)

Norway's Viktor Hovland picks up a stroke on the par-five 16th after clipping into two feet with his third.

It's only his third birdie of the day and adds a slightly nicer slant to a scorecard littered with bogeys.

  5. Young & Thomas go closepublished at 23:28 BST 14 May

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas -2 (15)

Justin Thomas and Cameron Young both go agonisingly close to birdies.

Thomas rolls his putt just past the lip of the hole while Young skims one just past.

Both men have to settle for birdies.

  6. Rose chips in for birdie on 14thpublished at 23:26 BST 14 May

    Scheffler -2, M Fitzpatrick +1, Rose E (14)

Oh hello. There have only been a handful of birdies on the par-three 14th today, which is currently playing at 3.385.

The pin is in a horrible location but listen to the roar that greets one from Justin Rose.

The Englishman looked to be scrmabling for his par there after finding the left bunker but he chips out beautifully and points to the sky as he gets back to level par.

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler's momentum is checked as he wafts at a par putt from five feet and misses it high, while Matt Fitzpatrick's run of pars ends with a bogey four.

  7. Postpublished at 23:22 BST 14 May

    Smalley -3 (13)

As Martin Kaymer joins the leaders, another interested party also moves to three under.

American Alex Smalley had a hot start of three birdies in his opening five holes before two bogeys around the turn knocked him back.

However, back-to-back birdies has reignited his challenge - and he's back with the leaders.

  8. Kaymer closes with a birdiepublished at 23:20 BST 14 May

    Kaymer -3 (67)

Martin Kaymer just comes up short for a dream finish but he'll absolutely pocket that tap-in birdie on his final hole.

He signs for a three-under 67 and that's a share of the lead.

    Rolling back the years.

  9. Fleetwood bogeys 15thpublished at 23:18 BST 14 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre E, Fleetwood +2 (15)

Tommy Fleetwood grimaces after a 20-foot putt on the 15th comes up short.

A poor tee shot means he is unable to get on the green in two and it leaves him too much to do with the putter.

    Robert MacIntyre snaffles par.

    Love that from Martin Kaymer.

The ninth hole at Aronimik is a beast of a par five at 690 yards and it's his final hole of an excellent round.

After a decent drive down the middle, the German whips out his driver again for his second shot and hits it clean off the deck. A smile lights up his face as he biffs it all the way to the green and it comes up within 15 feet.

He'll have an eagle putt to seize the outright lead.

  11. Birdie for Rosepublished at 23:14 BST 14 May

    Scheffler -3, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose +1 (13)

    Justin RoseImage source, Getty Images

Finally a birdie for Justin Rose, who plays the 13th like the Justin Rose that featured at the Masters last month.

The Englishman finds the fairway off the tee and makes things look very simple as he stiffs an iron to seven feet before rolling in for a three.

There's no birdie for Scottie Scheffler, who not for the first time today is putting from over 35 feet, while Matt Fitzpatrick makes his 13th consecutive par.

  12. Thomas escapes with bogeypublished at 23:11 BST 14 May

    Young +1, Bradley +2, Thomas -2 (14)

A wayward tee shot from Justin Thomas at the 14th ends up striking the grandstands running alongside the course and he nearly pays the price.

Thomas drops his club on the ground in disgust with himself.

But with a double bogey looming on the green he drains a monster 38 footer to ensure he escapes with just one dropped shot.

  13. Morikawa's putting problemspublished at 23:08 BST 14 May

    Hovland +3, Morikawa E, Lowry -1 (15)

Collin Morikawa looks disgusted with himself as he coughs up a shot on the 15th.

The American is on the dance floor in two but comes up well short from nearly 80 feet and then prods his par-saving attempt past the cup.

Routine stuff for Shane Lowry, whose second doesn't quite carry on to the front edge but it allows him to play a little bump and run to gimme range.

  14. PGA pro Block 'has nothing to lose'published at 23:03 BST 14 May

Some of you loyalists may remember from three years ago, PGA club professional Michael Block finished in the top 15, played alongside Rory McIlroy on the Sunday and hit a fairytale hole-in-one in his final round.

He's back again this week and has gone round in level par. As ever, he's speaking for all of us:

"I have zero to lose. I'm about to be 50. I can see my wife and my kid up on the hill there right now, and my boss, they support me 100 per cent. There's zero losing this week.

"They don't expect me to play well. They hope I play well, and they know I could play well, but I could get last place, and I'm still going to be loved and have a great job and everything else - and that's perfectly fine with me.

"I was in the bathroom on hole 12 or 13 today, and there was no mirror, so I wasn't looking at myself. But I said: 'You got this. You're actually pretty good, buddy.'

"And I just kept going. I'm playing with DJ [Dustin Johnson], one of my idols, a guy I looked up to my whole life, and Rasmus [Hojgaard], who's an unbelievable player. They both hit it 50 yards by me on every shot. It's really cool. It's kind of fun if I'm honest!"

On the conditions: "I had 30-mile-an-hour winds at Bandon Dunes [in Oregon last week] so this was nothing, to be honest!

  15. Unlucky 13 for Youngpublished at 23:00 BST 14 May

    Young +1, Bradley +2, Thomas -3 (13)

    Cameron YoungImage source, Getty Images

Cameron Young has been a little up and down in this round.

He finds the sand with his approach shot at the 365-yard 13th hole but his chip out only finds the rough just above the bunker.

    The inevitable bogey follows.

A bogey for Keegan Bradley as well but the efficient Justin Thomas holds par.

  16. Postpublished at 22:54 BST 14 May

    Scheffler -3, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose +2 (12)

    Scottie SchefflerImage source, Getty Images

Scottie Scheffler has never held an outright lead or even been tied for it at the end of the first round of a major championship in 26 previous attempts.

However, given he has tended to be there or thereabouts when it comes to contending on a Sunday and been inside the top 10 in 10 of his last 12 majors, well, it's already looking pretty ominous for the rest of the field.

While he can't dispatch a long 44-foot putt for birdie on the 12th, he taps in from four feet after leaving it short.

He's currently ranked fifth with the flatstick today and is yet to miss a fairway.

  17. Postpublished at 22:54 BST 14 May

There are a lot of people clustering on this leaderboard within two shots of the summit.

The DP World Tour have just tweeted, external that the record after round one of any major is 28 players, set at the 1993 Open Championship.

Currently, it's 32. It will be interesting to see how that develops over the final couple of hours' play.

  18. MacIntyre drops backpublished at 22:52 BST 14 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre E, Fleetwood +1 (14)

Ah, I jinxed Bob with that post at 22:42 as he's just bogeyed the par-three 14th. He missed the green right and couldn't get up and down, missing a 14-footer for his par.

But he still has a par-five to come on the 16th, so there's still a chance of getting back under par.

  19. Hovland & Lowry drop backpublished at 22:45 BST 14 May

    Hovland +3, Morikawa -1, Lowry -1 (14)

Viktor Hovland and Shane Lowry both dump their balls in the second of the two greenside bunkers down the left of the 14th hole.

And it costs them both a shot, with both unable to splash out inside eight feet.

  20. Thomas misses birdie chancepublished at 22:43 BST 14 May

    Young E, Bradley +2, Thomas -3 (12)

    Justin ThomasImage source, Getty Images

Justin Thomas is grumble under his breath after his tee shot at 12th is a little wider than he would have like.

However, the 33-year-old recovers with a 102-yard iron on to the green which leaves him 10 feet from the hole.

Thomas rolls his head back in frustration, though, after his putt comes up just short and he has to settle for par.
