Scottie Scheffler looks to be getting into his ball striking groove, which could spell danger for the rest of the field, judging by his tee shot on the par-three fourth.

It's as crips as you like and does everything bar go in the hole - so no hole-in-one but it's an easy birdie and a signal of intent from the world number one.

Tyrrell Hatton gets back on an even keel for the day with a birdie on the long par-five 10th hole, which is measuring in at 606 yards today.

Rory McIlroy will be encouraged with a couple of things so far; the leader have come back to him a little bit and he's giving himself chances for birdie.

Sadly, the putter has started a little cold for the 36-year-old.

Three pars to start but he's only seven off the lead now - two better off than when he stepped onto the 10th tee about an hour ago.

Veteran Richard Bland was going along nicely today until coming unstuck at the fifth where he made a double-bogey six to slip back to one under.

Bland is playing here as the winner of the Senior PGA Championship last year - a title he'll be defending next week at Congressional.

More trouble for Jhonattan Vegas, who smashes a drive into the trees down the left on the second.

He takes his medicine with a pitch to the fairway but leaves a 25-foot putt from the front edge with a wedge shot that comes up woefully short.

It's going to be another bogey. The 40-year-old has dropped four shots in this last three holes to relinquish the outright lead.

One or two gasps as Matt Fitzpatrick almost chips in for eagle with his approach but instead his ball strikes the flag and skitters off to the left to leave a much longer putt for a three than he'd have expected.

He can't drop that in but the Englishman is looking good so far.

Jon Rahm finds the green on the long par-four ninth hole, leaving himself about 18 feet for birdie - but he has to settle for par.

He reaches the turn in two under par for the day and, with overnight leader Jhonattan Vegas starting slowly, Rahm is suddenly right in the mix.

A birdie chance comes and goes for Rory McIlroy on the 11th, so it's two pars to start for the 2012 and 2014 US PGA champion.

Playing partner Xander Schauffele - who made his 64th consecutive cut on Friday - has made a hot start with the putter, sinking a 12-footer for par on the 11th having done so from 20 feet for birdie on 10.

The first player today to cash in on the driveable par four at 14 is America's Maverick McNealy whose tee shot blitzes the green.

He's got less than eight feet for eagle and casually rolls it in.

Up to three under par for the tournament. That's only four off the lead now.

The eighth hole is playing only 316 yards today so everyone will be having a crack - as Viktor Hovland does. He misses the green but chips up to nine feet and sinks the putt to card a second birdie of the day.

The Norwegian came close to winning this in 2023 but for a final round run-in with the lip of a bunker, and after his recent struggles it'd be great to see him challenge again.

The big slope at the front of the second green has been catching players out all week - and Max Homa comes up well short with his approach.

Scottie Scheffler isn't though as he makes a perfectly struck iron spin back after landing pin high - but not too much spin to send it off the green, and he'll have a birdie putt coming up.

Jhonattan Vegas starts like a man feeling the pressure. The 40-year-old who is aiming to become the first player from Venezuela to win a major, clips forward out of the pines and scuttles his ball down toward the green.

It comes up short mind and he is hampered by a very awkward stance as he plays a little chip and run onto the green to leave a 25-foot putt for par.

He rolls that four feet past and it'll be a bogey to begin with. He was at 10 under heading on to the 18th on Friday evening!

Matt Fitzpatrick from an almost identical initial position on the green can't roll in a long-range birdie effort and takes a par along with Matthieu Pavon.

Alex Noren was one under for his round until he took on the sixth hole and ended up with a bogey after missing the green to the left and then failing to get up and down.

That's his first dropped shot of the day as he returns to where he started - on three under.

It's been a decent start for Keegan Bradley whose three birdies and one bogey through eight holes has him threatening the top five.

Two under is the best score out there at the moment and the Team USA Ryder Cup captain is making his move.

Also moving up is JT Poston who is at -5 after birdieing the second.

Robert MacIntyre compounds his bogey on the first by making another on the second, and he slots back into the group at two under par.

Scrappy start from this group, with Max Homa finding the left bunker by the green, which costs him a shot.

Scottie Scheffler goes left of the green but he too makes an opening bogey, but Si Woo Kim shows them how it's done as he escapes from the sand and sinks his six footer to save par.

Jon Rahm responds perfectly to a dropped shot at the sixth with a birdie four on the seventh - thanks to a brilliant approach after playing it as a three-shotter.

It's about time Rahm made a big run at a major as he's not been at his best since joining LIV Golf - but this is much more like it from the Spaniard.

Lovely tee shot from Aaron Rai on the fourth, almost holes the thing for an ace, but he'll have a great birdie chance coming up. A solid par start for Rai so far.
