Great sand save from Rory McIlroy too, just for a par though, and his day is almost done.

People on each other's shoulders to get a glimpse of Rory.

Both players on the green about 30 feet away on 18 in this nice little battle for second place between the pair of Americans.

Although you could say the entire day has been a battle for second place...

I can already see the entirety of Portrush waiting on 18.

It's going to be quite the moment when McIlroy approaches the green.

Pretty similar spot for Rory McIlroy that he was in yesterday off among the crowd down the right of 17, and this time there's nowhere near as much noise as he dinks one down the hill - lands it on the green but gets a nasty bounce to his left and ends up in the bunker.

It's been a fine week for Xander Schauffele, who has performed admirably in defending his Open title.

The American went round in a level-par 71 on Thursday but has followed that with three rounds in the sixties and will have another top-10 finish at a major to stick on the CV.

As for today's playing partner, Tyrrell Hatton has found himself in the mix at another major but absolutely nothing happened for him with the putter, especially over the weekend.

The Englishman's time will come, I'm sure.

Scottie Scheffler, aiming for a fourth birdie on Calamity Corner this week, plonks his tee shot 12 feet from the hole.

It breaks left to right but Scheffler gives it too much and the ball stays afloat.

Li Haotong's excellent lag putt from distance sets up another par for him. It's been an eventful level-par round so far, with five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.

The 17th is named 'Purgatory' but it's been quite heavenly for players this week as one of the five easiest holes on the course - mainly because of weather conditions.

Today players can bang a drive over the brow of the huge hill and let it power down the slope towards the green - like Harris English does here with only 28 yards left to the green.

Chipping up to 13 feet was good, not great, but he nailed the putt to make his birdie.

Chris Gotterup also played a beauty but just got snarled up in the rough a bit and then missed a 15-footer for birdie.

Two Americans have finished their final rounds with clean cards.

Brian Harman finished with back-to-back birdies to take him to nine under for the tournament.

It's a case of what might have been for the champion of two years ago, whose 73 yesterday ruled him out of contention.

Meanwhile Russell Henley built on a six-under 65 on Saturday with a similar 68 today to also finish at nine under.

A huge roar for Matt Fitzpatrick, who judges his birdie putt across the 16th green to perfection.

Fitzpatrick has cut a frustrated figure out here over the past hour but he returns to double figures under par.

The chants for McIlroy are still in full flow. The atmosphere this week has been electric. It's just a shame these fans haven't been treated to a nail-biting Sunday.

Matt Fitzpatrick looks to the sky as he lands a monster 30 footer for birdie on 16 - where's that been all day he's thinking as he's largely looked a frustrated figure most of his round.

He's still managed four birdies today, but the three bogeys have been the problem.

Rory McIlroy produces a nice up and down from just the top of the gorge that guards the 16th green and gets a great reception - including a few "Ole, Ole, Ole" chants as some fans already start to think towards the Ryder Cup...

Scottie Scheffler can't get his birdie putt to drop from 20 feet but he'll be more than happy with pars from here.

A five-shot advantage over the field with three holes left of a major is what you dream of as a player.

Li Haotong makes three to rejoin the large group at 10 under.

It's par at the last for Robert MacIntyre, who looks like he is going to beat his best finish at The Open.

He's closed out at 10 under and is currently in share of fifth.

His previous best was a tie for sixth, set here at Royal Portrush in 2019.

The Scot clearly enjoys playing in Northern Ireland.

That's some two from Harris English on the 16th - the American can really stripe an iron and another sweet strike gets him onto the dancefloor at the tough 16th.

He's still over 40 feet away though but rolls that it for a magical birdie.
