    Champions League

It feels like the Champions League is stirring into life.

Manchester City started the night outside the top eight before finishing in the top eight. Chelsea were in it, then out, and then back in again.

And record 15-time winners Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain both have to make do with a play-off place.

Then there were those scenes in Lisbon as Jose Mourinho got one over his old club as Benfica beat Real Madrid - with the goalkeeper scoring one of the goals.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to Canal+: "I'm satisfied with the result. It was a strong comeback from us. I thought it was a really strong performance. The penalty decision rocked us, but we responded really well.

"We expect a tough game whoever we play next. We are pleased to still be in the competition and still be fighting. We wanted to be in the last-16."

A reminder that Newcastle, having finished in 12th, are a seeded pair with reigning champions Paris St-Germain, who finished in 11th.

That means they will be drawn against either Monaco or Qarabag, who finished 21st and 22nd, respectively.

The play-off draw is on Friday and first leg takes places on 17-18 February, with the return the following week.

  4. Alisson inspired me - Popepublished at 22:56 GMT 28 January

    FT: Paris St-Germain 1-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, speaking to TNT Sports: "We knew we needed to win the game, that was evident coming into it. We did really well to stay in the game and had a couple of chances at the end there, but a really good performance.

"Another handball. When he goes to the screen you think it's going to happen. I was thankful to save this one. After that we looked really solid. Hopefully we won't have many more of them."

On saving a penalty from the Ballon d'Or winner: "It's not bad. I remember watching Alisson here last year and he had an unbelievable game. A little inspiration from him I think.

"This is a really good step in the right direction, I'm really pleased with that.

"There are things to work on. We came to this competition two years ago and didn't get to this stage. This is really exciting for us."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on the strength of the Premier League in Europe: "It's not something I've thought too deeply about. The English teams have been strong. The Premier League is such a strong league it can only make you better. The games we play week in week out are so tough.

"Dan [Burn] never ceases to amaze us. I thought he was top class and very, very good for us today. I'm delighted for him, he's such an important power and presence for us in the dressing room.

"I think we're showing [we belong]. We've been pleased with what we've delivered. There's a slight frustration we haven't been able to get over the line in some games. But this is the real acid test for us, coming here against the holders of the competition. I thought we performed really well.

"We went all out to try and win the game. We chased it as much as we could without leaving us the possibility of losing. We tried everything we could to try to make the top eight.

"It's such an unbelievable competition to be in and we never take it for granted. We want to appreciate it, and the work we've put into getting here we don't want to throw it away.

"We do have a good squad. We made changes today that we needed to make. We might need to make some more for Liverpool because in no time at all we're back at Anfield."

  6. 'Newcastle can take confidence from this result'published at 22:54 GMT 28 January

    FT: PSG 1-1 Newcastle

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Parc des Princes

PSG were in total control but Newcastle hung in there. They showed great resilience and then they got the goal just before half-time.

I think in the second half they showed great balance and then when you think about Harvey Barnes chance you wouldn't really want it to fall to anyone else, but he slipped and sliced it wide.

It's not the result Newcastle wanted, but a lot was made about their poor away form this season, I think they can take a fair bit of confidence from this game. Second half I thought they were the better team.

Paris St-Germain boss Luis Enrique, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's always difficult when you have expectations to be in the top eight.

"We deserved to win the match, not with a big gap, but I have to say Newcastle is a very good side. They played great with set-pieces.

    "But we need to improve."

  9. 'That was Joe Willock of old'published at 22:50 GMT 28 January

    FT: Paris St-Germain 1-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe: "Really good resilience, character and quality. We had to deal with a lot today. Certainly the penalty decision against us was really harsh. We had to handle that and it was big for us. They were an outstanding team as well.

"I was really happy for Joe Willock for getting the goal. That was Joe Willock of old. His goalscoring record when he first joined was so strong. He's had a tough time with injuries. He's been waiting for opportunities behind the scenes and I thought tonight was the right time.

"We wanted to win tonight, we didn't want the extra games. But we'll take it. We went down that route in the best possible way with a great performance against the holders. There's a lot to be positive about."

Dominic Solanke: "I wanted to try and get that second goal and kill off the game. After that it was pretty comfortable.

"Everyone knows how long I was out for. It will take me a bit of time to get up to speed but every game I am feeling strong."

  14. 'A recipe for success'published at 22:42 GMT 28 January

    Owen Hargreaves
Former Manchester United midfielder on TNT Sports

Tottenham are still very much a work in progress. We saw that they were effective on set pieces again tonight, that is where the first goal comes from, but they are missing some of those flair players in attack and really struggle to break teams down that sit in.

Maybe defend well, keep it tight at the back, like they have in the Champions League, I think that is a recipe for success. Trying to out-play teams without some of their best players, I don't think that's feasible right now.

  15. 'Fans were fantastic'published at 22:41 GMT 28 January

    FT: Eintracht Frankfurt 0-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank: "Very happy for the performance. The players showed great character and mentality.

"We were more or less in control from the beginning to the end. There are no easy games but we are sitting here with 17 points and finish fourth. I think it is very impressive.

"The fans were fantastic. They travelled in numbers and showed support throughout the game."

One of your best results this season? "It is not about me. I am very happy the staff, the players and everyone and how we prepared for these games in general is very positive."

On Randal Kolo Muani scoring: "I said to him please don't only score against your old clubs! We know when you come to a new club and new country it is never straightforward. I hope this will give him confidence."

On five English teams in top eight: "That is dominant. I think we all said for a few years the Premier League is the best league in the world and I think this is another sign of it."

    FT: Napoli 2-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, speaking to TNT Sports: "The coach said [at half-time] to try to be calm, and to try put our game on the pitch.

"The second half of the game was more open. Cole [Palmer] is a brilliant player when he is on the pitch - he is a special player.

"It is very positive for us because people have a lot of doubt about us. I think today we showed our power. We need to rest and now focus on the Premier League."

Away in Napoli, it's an intense place. Not many teams go there and win. It doesn't matter what team Napoli put out, it's not an easy place to go and win.

And yet, Liam Rosenior found a way of doing it. Chelsea found a way of doing it. They grew into the game.

I think that's how you're going to see him and Chelsea's journey progress.
