As a Southampton supporter, I’ve watched both Che Adams and Ross Stewart. To choose Adams as a sole striker was a baffling decision. He was OK at Championship level with a partner striker, but lacks Stewart’s presence and power.

    Stuart

Our best striker did not play and we had no shots on target. Very frustrating. Shankland must start the Brazil game

Defeat by Morocco on Friday has left the Scots' most likely route out of the group being as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

You'd need a degree in mathematics - which I certainly don't have - to know what other results are best.

Thankfully, Scott Mullen has had a crack at working out what Scotland need to do - or need to happen - anyway.

It shouldn’t need to be said, but Morocco are no mugs.

Champions of Africa, fifth in the world and on a fantastic 39-game unbeaten run.

And yet the Scotland players were scunnered on the full-time whistle after they didn’t take anything off them.

    A bit of perspective?

I blame Clarke for changing the set up. Why would you put out a 4-4-1-1 set up and why wasn't Shankland on from the start? They were absolutely pathetic

    Jim

I don’t think Clarke picked a team to win the game. It looked as if he was happy with narrow loss or draw. Even the substitutions were a mystery. Last 5 mins substitute a right back with a slower RB and last min don’t let goalkeeper go up for corner

It was a much better second half. Disastrous start, I thought we lacked a little bit of confidence and belief but in the second half we were much better.

Scotland could have, and should have, had a penalty but in the grand scheme of things, it's a 1-0 defeat against a team that were in the semi-finals of the last tournament. We live to fight another day.

Morocco 'got away with one' - McGinn

Midfielder John McGinn said "Morocco have got away with one" after he was not awarded a penalty in the second half.

"We feel disappointed, feel as if we can bring more to the game, bring our qualities," McGinn said. "We could have been helped at times by the ref with 50-50 challenges, decisions. No problem with allowing things to flow but it has to be consistent across both teams.

"Sometimes that goes for you. If we got a couple of those penalty decisions for us, I don't think VAR intervenes.

"Out the corner of my eye, I could see [the Morocco defender] charging in. I got first contact to the ball and he took me out. It's a penalty kick for me. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. If it was given on the field, no chance it's overturned.

"Morocco have got away with one there. But we need to be better and create chances from open play, not rely on referee's decisions."

A united bunch, the Scotland lot.

Every member, staff and squad, who passed through the mixed zone or who could be accessed in the tunnel told the same story; “we should’ve had a penalty”.

Take your pick, some might say, but it definitely left the vast majority of The Tartan Army in agony.

"I think it is a penalty kick," former referee Christina Unkel said on ITV.

"The referee is known for tolerating a higher level of physical contact but you don't need a lot to give a penalty.

"It's a simple foul, there's contact at the knee position and there's another angle that suggests there might be a step on the left boot."

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke, speaking to BBC Radio Scotland: " I thought we were good. Terrible start but the reaction to that was good. We had to dig in for five or 10 minutes just to get our feet in the game.

"Once we were in the game, we showed we could cause them problems. The disappointment would be that we didn't create the one clear cut chance that would have got us the point.

"This group of players, this squad, have shown that [resilience] in abundance over the years. They're in there, their flat, disappointed, but we've got another chance.

"Everybody is talking about the Scott McTominay [penalty incident]. I actually looked at the John McGinn one, which was 50-50. Some referees would give it, some don't. Sometimes VAR will get involved.

"I was a little bit disappointed in the last man foul [from Diop on Adams]. For me, Che might be clear through on goal. On another day, you might get those decisions.

"This team are ready to go again. We're here to try and do what no Scottish team has done before. We gave it everything tonight, and we'll try and do it again."

They can be proud of themselves, particularly in that second half. In the first quarter, they were second best by a country mile. However, they got back into the game.

It was a pretty even game second half, two teams with not a lot between them.

By the end, Scotland were the better side. They were pushing, we saw the resilience we knew they had, the physicality they've got. They had half chances, got into good areas. They just needed the break of the ball.

Scotland striker Che Adams, speaking to BBC Scotland: "Towards the end we were pushing for the equaliser. We didn't manage to get there but it was a proud performance, let down by the early goal which was a sucker punch.

"We reacted well and we were unlucky not to get the goal in the end.

"We just have to believe. We put in a good performance there towards the end. There's confidence there to build on and that's what the boys are thinking about."

In his time as Scotland head coach, Steve Clarke has been pelted with flak for his risk-averse management, his innate caution, his reluctance to roll the dice.

Whatever happened to that guy? Where did he go?

In the closing stages of this thriller in Boston, Clarke was a footballing Amarillo Slim, a fearless gambler throwing on attacking players in pursuit of a point in a game that lurched from total Moroccan dominance to total Moroccan panic.

The Scots didn't manage a shot on target but, boy, did they show some bottle.

Those closing minutes were frenetic. Clarke, as if playing poker in Vegas, sent on Ben Gannon-Doak, Dykes and Ross Stewart. By the end, Scott McTominay was virtually playing centre-forward.

They left themselves hugely exposed at the back but the attitude was to hell with it. McTominay hit the side-netting, Dykes headed over, McTominay had a shot smothered. They pushed and pushed.
