Mattias Svanberg scored just 18 seconds after coming on against Tunisia.

It was the second fastest goal by a substitute at a World Cup since 1966, behind only Richard Morales' 16 seconds for Uruguay, against Senegal, in 2002.

When Graham Potter strode out to Sweden training donning a Stetson, it was a bit of fun to get into the World Cup mood as they prepared for the tournament in Texas.

Some might have quipped that the cowboy hat was fitting for a manager who was maybe drinking in last-chance saloon following back-to-back sackings in his previous jobs lasting a combined 15 months.

But at Estadio Monterrey in Mexico, Potter's side showed they mean business in this competition as a ruthless Sweden side stuck five past Tunisia.

For a manager who was dismissed by West Ham in September after failing at Chelsea before that, few would have expected him to be steering a nation to a winning start in the World Cup this summer.

"You never know, that's the truth," said Potter after the 5-1 win. "You never know how things are going to go. We were optimistic because we felt confident in the work.

"But until the game is played you don't know for sure. That's the beauty of sport. We are delighted with how we performed tonight and it's a great start for us."

The five goals they scored against Tunisia was more than the four they scored in the entire group stage of their qualifying campaign - largely overseen by Potter's predecessor Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Can Sweden get another win and secure their spot in the round of 32?

  3. 'I sing the anthem, look and feel Swedish' - Potterpublished at 13:00 BST

Potter excelled in roles at Swansea and Brighton, but his coaching career began in Sweden, where he took Ostersunds FK from the fourth tier to the top flight, winning the domestic cup and leading them into their first European campaign.

It was there he learned Swedish. On his recently launched Instagram account, Potter appears relaxed, sharing images of himself exploring the country's natural landscapes with his family, reading Nordic literature and taking part in cultural events.

"I feel very Swedish when I'm working," he said, explaining he even sings the national anthem before matches.

"I even look a bit Swedish. Two of my children were born in Sweden. I had seven unforgettable years at Ostersunds, with memories that will stay with me for life.

"I came from the fourth tier of Swedish football, which is quite low, and worked my way up through the system to the Allsvenskan. You almost become Swedish in a coaching sense because of the experiences you have. I think it has definitely helped.

"Now I'm working for the Swedish FA as head coach of the national team, so I feel very Swedish."

Potter extended his contract until 2030 before the March international break, prior to sealing qualification.

That ensured he will lead Sweden at this World Cup, as well as the 2028 European Championship and 2030 World Cup should they qualify.

  6. Isak vs Van Dijk - Who comes out on top?published at 12:44 BST

    Netherlands v Sweden (18:00 BST)

    sweden

Alexander Isak marked his first World Cup appearance in style, grabbing a goal and two assists, while his Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk opened his own tournament account with a trademark header.

The Liverpool forward, who is still finding rhythm after injuries disrupted his start to life at Anfield following a £125m move in September, announced himself on the world stage with a thumping finish into the bottom corner after a powerful run from the left on the half‑hour mark.

Van Dijk, meanwhile, did exactly what Liverpool fans have seen for years.

He rose above everyone to head the Netherlands in front against Japan after 51 minutes, meeting a pinpoint cross from fellow Red Ryan Gravenberch.

The Dutch couldn’t hold on, eventually drawing 2–2, but their captain looked strong throughout.

Now they meet in a World Cup match that could feel like a Liverpool civil war.

They’ve battled hundreds of times in training together, but who will come out on top?

Please can you explain why Turkey are out of the competition with one game still to play?

    Robin

Hi Robin, you're not the only one left scratching your head about this.

Turkey are still to play USA, and there are three qualifying places up for grabs in Group D, but if teams are joint on points after three games then head to head fixtures determine who finishes above who.

As Australia and Paraguay have beaten Turkey, they are unable to qualify even if they beat USA and either Australia or Paraguay lose when they play one another next Friday.

This was the 41st time in World Cup history in which Brazil have scored three or more goals - five more than any other nation.

Furthermore, Brazil have now surpassed Germany - including the former West Germany - for the most total goals scored in the history of the tournament. They now have 241 to the Germans' 239.

There were reminders of Brazil's glorious past all over the Philadelphia Stadium.

Ronaldinho, who was part of team crowned world champions in 2002, was in the crowd, while fans waved replica World Cup trophies in the air in the stands during the 3-0 win over Haiti.

Two goals by Matheus Cunha and another lovely finish by Vinicius Jr - all before half-time - ensured Brazil are up and running at this tournament.

A first win, a first clean sheet, fans clad in yellow dancing in the stands.

And then you remembered Brazil were facing a Haiti team more than 80 places below them in Fifa's world rankings.

That the Selecao were so flat after half-time that they failed to register an attempt on target in the second half.

  15. 'Scotland can create a problem' - Ancelottipublished at 12:07 BST

Scotland v Brazil (Wed, 23:00 BST)

Speaking about Brazil's next match against Scotland, Carlo Ancelotti said: "We don't think about knocking out [Scotland]. We think about playing well and improving, and we analyse the match.

"If we can reach the first position of the group, that would be important for the future. So we want to prepare well for that match.

"Scotland can create a problem. They created problems to Morocco. And so we have to focus on the match and be calm and keep on working to improve."

  16. Neymar 'available' to face Scotlandpublished at 12:02 BST

There was surprise when Carlo Ancelotti named Neymar in his squad ahead of Chelsea's Joao Pedro.

34-year-old Neymar is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals but has not played for his country since October 2023.

The former Barcelona and Paris St-Germain forward has been struggling with a calf problem and did not even travel to Philadelphia for the Haiti match.

However, Ancelotti revealed afterwards that Neymar will be available to feature against Scotland.

"Yes, he will be training tomorrow individually and then on Monday with the team," Ancelotti said. "He will be available for Scotland."

    Will his return help Brazil?

  18. Cunha improves Brazil performancepublished at 11:51 BST

Manchester United's Matheus Cunha was critical to Brazil's better display in response to their 1-1 draw with Morocco, not only with his two goals, but also his movement, which made their attack much more fluid.

The 27-year-old United forward celebrated his goals with his now trademark surfing celebrations – first pretending to stand up on the board and then mimicking swimming out towards the waves after his second.

And his performance afforded Carlo Ancelotti's forward line more balance and poise, two key elements of surfing.

There had been some surprise Brentford's Igor Thiago started ahead of him for the opening game.

But Cunha laid down a marker here to suggest he can be Ancelotti's man to lead the attack in this tournament.

When asked whether Cunha would remain in the centre-forward role for the next match against Scotland in Miami, Carlo Ancelotti said: "We'll see".

"I think that Matheus' position was a good position for creating problems for the defence. And he filtered his passes very well, and his position was a good position to be effective at the front.

"It can be an option. We discussed this yesterday. I don't want a clear identity. Maybe we will change this on the next match."

Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil responded to criticisms of their performance in their opening-game draw with Morocco with a impressive display, albeit against lesser opposition in Philadelphia, to go top of Group C.

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha, who replaced Brentford striker Igor Thiago in the starting line-up, scored a fortuitous opener in the 23rd minute when Haiti defender Hannes Delcroix kicked the ball off him and it spun into the net.

However, the forward was the first to react to Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide pushing Vinicius Jr's shot back out which forced Delcroix to react.

Cunha's second was a fine finish after Vinicius Jr put him through and he rifled a strike into the top corner nine minutes before half-time.

Vinicius Jr then got in on the act in first-half stoppage time after former West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta played a brilliant ball over the top and the Real Madrid star calmly slotted home past the goalkeeper for his second goal of the tournament.

The only disappointment for Ancelotti's side was an injury to Barcelona winger Raphinha, who was forced off in the opening 45 minutes and replaced by Bournemouth's Rayan.

Brazil keeper Alisson did need to pull off a fine second-half save when Ricardo Ade rose to divert a corner on target but the result was never in doubt.

Teenager Endrick was denied a goal on his World Cup debut with the offside flag going up after he netted late on.
