Port Vale have history when it comes to FA Cup giant killings.

Their 1996 victory over cup holders Everton remains one of the most famous days in their history.

That stood as the last time Vale had reached the fifth round, until Tuesday’s extra-time win over Championship side Bristol City.

They have another shot at history today with top-flight Sunderland the visitors to Vale Park 30 years later.

The best chances still for Southampton.

Southampton get up the other end at pace and it's a glorious opportunity for Cyle Larin but he drags his shot wide.

Southampton should score, it's a really good opportunity. The two best chances have fallen to them and they haven't taken them.

Really nice neat play from Southampton advancing into the penalty box but Tom Fellows' shot is saved by the legs of Benjamin Lecomte.

Oscar Bobb had lost the ball in the middle of the park and it was really well-worked from the visitors.

Harrison Reed tries his luck from outside the area but he snatches at the volley and it soars over the bar.

Where's Harry Wilson when you need him?

Timothy Castagne has the ball in the back of the net but the offside flag shoots up.

It comes from a free-kick and Joachim Andersen heads it down but had made his run a bit too soon. Castagne stabs in but the flag goes up.

VAR had a quick look but the decision stands.

Southampton don't have to run back because they know Fulham aren't going to cross it, they know they're going to cut inside and pass it and try and thread their way through.

It's becoming predictable and they have to experiment sometimes. Throw the ball in the box every now and again.

A clumsy challenge from Cyle Larin on Tom Cairney.

A bit of frustration as the Fulham captain had just made a challenge to deny the Saints forward breaking through the lines.

To be fair, Fulham have looked brighter since the break. It's stopping that Southampton counter attack and reducing errors in the middle of the park that they needed to address from the first half.

Rodrigo Muniz has attempted five shots, the first time he has attempted at least five shots in a match in the FA Cup since facing Watford on 9th January 2025 (six).

These Fulham players are at different levels of fitness and are slightly out of sync, slightly not with it and they're up against a team who's in sync, confident and had a week's preparation.

After the midweek game Fulham had, they've probably had hours' preparations, not days.

It's been far too easy for Southampton who have looked a threat going forward. Fulham have been struggling to get back and for me that's a problem.

Port Vale striker Andre Gray says Premier League Sunderland are "not going to enjoy" being at Vale Park for today' FA Cup fifth round tie.

The 34-year-old, who played in the 2019 FA Cup final for Watford against Manchester City, set up the winning goal against Bristol City on Tuesday night to set up a meeting with the top-flight Black Cats.

"They're not going to enjoy being here and playing against a League One team," Gray told BBC Radio Stoke.

"We've got to use that to our advantage."

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris won't accept any excuses for his side not beating Port Vale today following some concerns over the condition of the pitch at Vale Park.

The Black Cats' head coach said, "I don't want to highlight this part of the game too much. Football is unpredictable. You have to adapt and find creative solutions. We'll have to be pragmatic."

Sunderland have enjoyed an excellent season on their return to the Premier League.

Regis Le Bris' side are comfortable in mid-table in the top-flight with 40 points. So, with the freedom that security brings, can the Black Cats produce a memorable cup run this season?

Sunderland are into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 2014-15 and they have not reached the quarter-final since the 2013-14 campaign.

But they are heavy favourites to end that wait to reach the last eight today.
