Matchwinner Tyreece Campbell was a constant threat for Charlton
Tyreece Campbell smashed in a delightful second-half winner as Charlton Athletic came from behind to beat Derby County and claim a sixth opening-day league victory in eight seasons.
Campbell shifted the ball on to his left foot and fired low into the right corner to secure victory and ensure a miserable away day in London for the Rams following a testing week off the pitch.
The aborted takeover by Saudi Arabia government official Turki Al-Sheikh had dampened optimism slightly in the build-up to the Championship kick-off.
But the Rams showed the typical grit and determination of a John Eustace side to lead at the break through a sweet Sammie Szmodics strike.
Charlton responded and their increasing pressure was rewarded after the interval when Lloyd Jones headed in from close range.
Campbell's winner ensured Derby left The Valley pointless - their fourth defeat in a row on the opening day of a league season.
The Addicks made a rapid start to the game but rarely threatened to go ahead before Szmodics scored following neat interplay with Morris, soon after going close with another strike.
The outstanding Campbell was at the heart of Charlton's best moments, sending in several dangerous crosses, notably when Rams defender Charlie Taylor made a brilliant block to stop Dan McNamara's fierce half-volley.
With pressure increasing on the resumption, Timothy Ouma headed wide when unmarked at a corner but Jones was not so wasteful as he powered the ball in from an exquisite Karlan Grant cross.
Campbell was the appropriate matchwinner and Charlton survived a late rally by the Rams, in which Oscar Fraulo forced a fine save from Will Mannion, who also denied Morris in injury time.
'The result is everything today' - Jones
'The result is everything' - Jones
Charlton manager Nathan Jones told BBC London:
"I'm really pleased – the result is everything and we've bedded in a lot of new signings. We had a captain's goal where he gets over the back and scores a great header.
"With TC [Tyreece Campbell], he gets in those positions all the time and, one v one, he is a threat. We just want the outcomes from him.
"Last week he had a similar chance, went outside and hit the bar with a rasper. Then he cut inside and hit the corner [to score against Cheltenham in the EFL Cup].
"We are in really advanced [contract] negotiations with him. We're hoping we can get that done.
"There are 45 more games. Last season we had a really good start – we had that momentum after coming up – and once we picked up a few injuries we didn't have the squad to cope with that.
"This season we have got the squad to cope with it a little bit more."
John Eustace reflects on loss at Charlton
Derby County head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:
"I thought the attitude of the boys was fantastic today. We've come to a difficult place on the opening day of the season and to go 1-0 up with an excellent goal was perfect.
"Second half, we fought and stayed in there but unfortunately it just wasn't good enough.
"I'm really disappointed with the two goals we conceded. We didn't defend the box well enough.
"We should be defending that cross [for the first goal] with no problem at all, and then for the second goal, our defence wasn't right. We got mixed up at the back and it was a bit too easy."
