That's as far as we go on the opening Saturday of the Championship season.

Middlesbrough striker Will Lankshear continued his fine start for his new club after making a big money move from Tottenham in the summer as his two goals saw off Lincoln City on their return to the second tier.

QPR and Millwall, who claimed 3-1 and 2-0 wins at Portsmouth and Brisol City respectively, end the first Saturday at the top of the table.

We'll be back tomorrow with Watford v Southampton in the used-to-be-managed-by-a-Still-brother derby, followed by relegated Burnley hosting also relegated West Ham.

    Thanks for your company today.

    Cheers!

Nine games down in the Championship so far this weekend, but we're not done there.

We've got three more big matches to come, including Southampton's first competitive game since they were kicked out of the play-offs over Spygate, two relegated Premier League sides facing off and the small matter of a Welsh derby:

    Sunday

    • Watford v Southampton (13:30 BST)
    • Burnley v West Ham (16:00)

    Monday

    • Cardiff v Wrexham (20:00)
  3. 'We turned the ball over too cheaply' - Wilderpublished at 19:39 BST 15 August

    FT: Sheffield United 0-0 Birmingham

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said there was "not a lot of quality" in the match as he gives his thoughts on the game.

"For us we turned the ball over too cheaply," he told Sky Sports."I always thought it was going to be a game of moments where we had to find a bit of quality and we never found that quality that we were after.

"Out of possession we were OK. Clean sheet is relatively important for us, we have to have something to build on.

"Overall 7/10 for us, a lot of work to be done on the training pitch, trying to improve the team because we're light in a couple of areas but I'm sure we can work that one out."

    • Bolton ended their six-game winless run against Preston in the league (D3 L3), beating them for the time since New Year’s Day 2001 under Sam Allardyce.
    • Millwall’s Josh Coburn has scored eight goals in his past 11 Championship appearances, netting a brace at Bristol City today. Since the start of March, he’s scored more Championship goals than any other player (8).
    • Charlton have won their opening league match in each of the past four seasons, with no side in England’s top four tiers currently on a longer winning run on MD1 than the Addicks (Arsenal and Man City also 4).
    • As well as scoring both of Middlesbrough’s goals against Lincoln, Will Lankshear led all players in the match for total shots (5), shots on target (3) and touches in the opposition box (8).
    • Lincoln lost a league match for the first time since November 2025, ending their club record 29-game unbeaten run in the Football League.
    • West Brom have won three of their past five away league games (D1 L1), as many as they had in their previous 34 (D11 L20).
    • Ilias Chair was involved in all three of QPR’s goals against Portsmouth (2 goals, 1 assist), already matching his goal involvement tally from 15 league games last term (1 goal, 2 assists).
    • Adam Idah scored Swansea’s winner at Stoke just 44 seconds after coming on as a substitute.
  6. 'More to come from both sides'published at 19:28 BST 15 August

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

    Rob Edwards
Ex-Wolves, Middlesbrough and Luton manager on Sky Sports

They'll take something from the game, they'll take the clean sheet, but I think both sides will know there is more to come.

Certainly for Sheffield United in terms of last season's start, it's progress.

  7. 'Let's just say we got a clean sheet'published at 19:26 BST 15 August

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

    Matt Kilgallon
Former Sheff Utd defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

Michael Cooper had to make saves but they weren't worldies.

Let's just say it's a clean sheet and we didn't lose. It's the first game of the season.

Ryan One looked good. If he plays like that then he'll start.

  8. 'Probably the right result'published at 19:23 BST 15 August

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

    Ian Clarkson
Ex-Birmingham captain on BBC Radio WM

    First-half we contained them.

In the second we got into positions to score and James Beadle made some good saves too.

On balance it was probably the right result.

The Championship has its first goalless draw of the season.

    Very little to add.

It took over an hour for a shot on target.

Jay Stansfield eventually did draw a save from Michael Cooper in the home goal and Patrick Bamford forced a stop from Birmingham goalkeeper James Beadle a few minutes later but... Yeah.

  10. 'Both managers will be happy with their defences'published at 19:19 BST 15 August

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

    Matt Kilgallon
Former Sheff Utd defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

Both back fours have been excellent today.

Not a load of quality out there today but managers will look at the positives defensively.

    Time for a late winner?

    FEELS unlikely.

  14. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 87 mins

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

Ryan One is back on the pitch for the home side but he doesn't look too happy and I doubt he's going to be able to contribute hugely.

The away side make two changes.

Ethan Laird and Luiz Vazquez are on.

  15. Postpublished at 85 mins

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

Ryan One, who only came on for the Blades a few minutes ago, looks like he might have to go off.

The home side have used all their subs so if the big striker can't get back out there they will end the game with 10 men.

  16. Postpublished at 83 mins

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

Sheffield United have had more of a threat in the past 10 minutes than in the 73 minutes prior.

  17. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 80 mins

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

Max Bird, who joined Birmingham yesterday, is on and Seung-Ho Paik is off.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 78 mins

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

Last two changes for the home side.

Harrison Burrows and Ryan One are on and off go Sam McCallum and Patrick Bamford.

Bamford of course the only Blades player to have had a shot on target today.

  19. 'Fine save by Beadle'published at 19:03 BST 15 August

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

    Richard Wilford
    BBC Radio WM commentator

It's a fine save by James Beadle.

He's had a quiet evening but he's done well there.

  20. Postpublished at 76 mins

    Sheff Utd 0-0 Birmingham

The home side have their first shot on target!

Patrick Bamford is fed through down the inside right and James Beadle stands up well to block his shot and the loose ball is cleared before Tyrese Campbell can tap it in.
