Last year, Arsenal had one makeshift striker when Havertz was injured.Today we have THREE proper strikers on the field / bench.

    Arsenal 1-0 Brentford

    Steph Houghton
Former Manchester City and England captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

Merino has slotted in really well when Arsenal have had the likes of Gyokeres, Havertz and Jesus out. There is going to be some competition for that number nine spot when they come back but he is coming up with the goods at the moment.

Nuts that VAR can take 5 minutes+ to make a decision over the feintest offside decision but doesn't get involved when a corner is incorrectly given instead of a goal kick.

    Arsenal 1-0 Brentford

    Arsenal are starting to purr.

Noni Madueke is proving a real handful and stings the hands of Caoimhín Kelleher.

Then Ben White, who has marked a rare Premier League start with an assist, goes close.

The home fans are enjoying this.

  9. 'Merino keeps coming up with goals'published at 19:47 GMT 3 December 2025

    Arsenal 1-0 Brentford

    Conor Coady
Wrexham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Merino is a top player isn't he? He keeps coming up with goals. We came up against him last year at Leicester, in one of the first games he played striker, and he got two goals. He took us by surprise.

He definitely had the instincts when he got up there and he is always a player that times his runs into the box well - like Frank Lampard, someone like that.

That's a really good effort from Jaidon Anthony. It comes to him on the edge of the area and he chips his first-time effort up but it's tipped over the bar by Dean Henderson.

Stand-in keeper Marco Bizot didn't cover himself in glory for that Brighton goal which was timed at eight minutes and 26 seconds.

Brighton are up to third in the table as it stands.

  12. 'Merino thinks like a striker now'published at 19:45 GMT 3 December 2025

    Arsenal 1-0 Brentford

    Alan Smith
Former Arsenal forward on Sky Sports

I tell you what, he came into that centre forward as a midfielder, but over the months he's turned into a forward that thinks like a striker.

Arteta's decision to keep him in there is vindicated big time.

The cross is good and the movement is even better from Merino.

  13. Merino continues to shine up toppublished at 19:45 GMT 3 December 2025

    Arsenal 1-0 Brentford

    Alex Howell
BBC Sport football reporter at Emirates Stadium

Merino is excellent for Arsenal as a striker. He gives them such a target to aim for.

The Spain international is so good in the air and he heads in White's cross so easily.

Good save from Martin Dubravka, that.

Jean-Philippe Mateta gets across his man and holds the ball up really well but his low powerful shot is parried away by the Burnley shot stopper.

Bizot has come in and not expected to play at all. The plan was for Martinez to play. He's come in and first corner he's probably thought, "I want to make a bit of a stance that I'm here" and unfortunately he's got it all wrong. Just let defenders defend.

    That didn't take long!

The leaders are up and running after a lovely bit of play to unlock Brentford's defence.

A delicious pass by Noni Madueke to allow Ben White to whip a cross into the box and Mikel Merino does the rest - great header.

    GOAL - Brighton 1-0 Aston Villapublished at 19:39 GMT 3 December 2025

    Jan Paul van Hecke

A scruffy, scruffy finish by Jan Paul van Hecke but frankly no-one cares.

Aston Villa just cannot get it clear after a corner and Van Hecke pounces from almost point blank range.

Villa are complaining that the corner shouldn't have been given and there is a long VAR check before a decision is made - goal stands!
