Today is a big day for Laura Coombs after the Manchester City midfielder announced she will retire from football at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old hopes to bow out with a Women's Super League title as her side sit six points clear of Arsenal with two games left - and the match against her former side Liverpool will be the last home fixture of her career.

Coombs, who earned seven caps for England, began her senior career at Arsenal in 2007 and represented some of the country's biggest clubs.

On the international stage, she received a surprise recall to the England squad after an eight-year absence by manager Sarina Wiegman in 2023.

She was part of the squad that reached the World Cup final that year, as well as winning the Women's Finalissima and Arnold Clark Cup.

Coombs said: "The way Manchester City are putting our women's team in a position to really go on and be successful long-term is so exciting.

"I'm very glad I got to play a part in that and I'm very excited to watch in the future."

Isobel Goodwin and Freya Godfrey have both scored five league goals this season, making London City Lionesses the first newly promoted team to have two players hit that mark in a Women’s Super League campaign since Manchester United in 2019-20 (Lauren James – 6 and Katie Zelem – 5).

  9. Will Taylor come back to haunt City?published at 11:53 BST 3 May

What Manchester City might be slightly concerned about is their former manager coming back to haunt them.

Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor was in charge at City for almost five years between 2020 and 2025, winning an FA Cup and a League Cup in his time there.

Now he'll be plotting their downfall as he looks to get his Liverpool side back on track after a home loss to West Ham last time out.

"We'll go there with our normal way of playing and try to be aggressive - far more aggressive than we were against West Ham," Taylor wrote in his column for the club's website.

"I know it must have been very frustrating for our fans to watch when they saw us second-best in all of the duels and we have to put that right in this game to give ourselves a chance to be successful.

"There is plenty to work on and it's a little setback after the positive run that we have been on, but we are really honest in our appraisals and our reviews and we'll be working hard this week to put things right."

Ahead of the match, Tottenham manager Martin Ho gave his thoughts on facing London City Lionesses: "They've got a world-class team, world-class players and they've started to get a lot of those players back who have been out for a while for them.

"They're a team with a lot of depth and quality so we know we have to respect them, but we must be right on it at the weekend if we want to get a result.”

  11. England to leave Tottenham in summerpublished at 11:50 BST 3 May

Tottenham captain Bethany England will leave the club when her contract ends this summer.

The 31-year-old joined Spurs from Chelsea in January 2023 and has scored 38 goals in all competitions - 32 of those in the Women's Super League (WSL), more than any other Tottenham player.

Under Martin Ho this season, she has scored seven goals in 19 appearances to help Spurs close to within two points of their best points WSL total and a likely top-six finish.

"Bethany has etched her name in Spurs Women history, and can leave feeling proud of the lasting impact she has made on the club," said managing director Andy Rogers.

After moving across London, England was instrumental in keeping Tottenham in the WSL, scoring 12 times in the second half of the season to pull Spurs away from danger.

Named club captain in September, she has been a fixture in the Spurs XI ever since, helping steer them to sixth place in 2023-24, 11th last season and competing towards the top half of the table so far this year.

"Bethany's leadership has shaped a defining era in the history of Tottenham Hotspur Women," Rogers added.

"She drove a rise in standards, professionalism and desire, and has continued to uphold and push these values throughout her time here."

The title might be forefront on the minds of Manchester City fans at the moment, but not far behind it will be the future of Bunny Shaw.

The prolific striker is out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen where she will be playing her football next season.

A WSL title and a new contract for Shaw would make for a perfect next few weeks for those of a blue persuasion in Manchester.

The Jamaican is also just one away from becoming the first player to score 20+ goals in three different Women’s Super League campaigns (20 in 2022-23, 21 in 2023-24).
