Hope Rochdale can overcome last week's result and disappointment. They deserve to be promoted, and hopefully the League see sense and change this rule of one up from such a big and competitive league.

    Derek, Glasgow

Rochdale are on a huge adrenaline dump from that near promotion. Puts the Iron in the perfect position to poach a win. I'd be worried if I were them.

    Ty, Scunthorpe fan in Rochdale

If everything fair and balanced it would be Rochdale v Carlisle final, but football, with all it’s twists, is rarely “fair”. As lifelong Iron fan looking for them to boot fairness and form out the park against Rochdale. No jumpers for goalposts here, just a scrappy win please.

Break in play, which will aid Wood, as Zak Brunt goes down with cramp.

Not that 13,000 people in the stands think it's genuine, of course.. but after the week he's had, you could understand it.

  4. 'We've grown and grown over past two years'published at 14:55 BST 3 May

    Rochdale v Scunthorpe (15:00 BST)

Rochdale skipper Ethan Ebanks-Landell has spoken about the turnaround in Dale's fortunes in the three years since they dropped out of the EFL.

The 33-year-old former Wolves and Sheffield United defender was part of the Dale squad who were relegated out of the Football League in 2022-23.

He credited the job boss Jimmy McNulty and the club's owners, the Ogden family - who took over in May 2024 - have done in turning things around for the Greater Manchester side.

They finished 11th in their first season in the National League before coming fourth last time, losing a dramatic eliminator at home to Southend, and then came within moments of the title on a dramatic final day at York last Saturday.

"When we did get relegated it was a tough, tough pill to swallow," Ebanks-Landell told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I think the club was in a bad place and it was tough when we came into this league.

"Over the last two years we've grown and grown and it's been a project managed by the gaffer and the new owners coming in."

It has been coming. We have gotten away with three or four chances already. We need to change our plan immediately.

GOAL: Carlisle 1-2 Boreham Woodpublished at 106 mins

    Zak Brunt

    He's done it again...

Lewis Richardson plays a gorgeous reverse pass in the box for Wednesday's matchwinner Zak Brunt on the left of the box and he applies a delicious chipped finish over Gabe Breeze and inside the far post.

Within a minute of the restart Wood have the goal they have been desperately searching for.

Can 10-man Carlisle rouse themselves once again?

One of the 307 Boreham Wood fans here at Brunton Park. Where else in the world would you get nearly 14,000 turning up for a fifth-tier game? Wood showing what a good team they are. The back-to-back promotion dream still very much on.

    Neil, Carlisle right now

I think Rush simply has to score that. Boreham Wood don't have the guts to take this to penalties.

  9. And Wood must score...published at 14:51 BST 3 May

    Carlisle 1-1 Boreham Wood

    Adam Lanigan

Quite simply, how are Boreham Wood not winning this match?

Totally dominant in the 10 or so minutes with a man extra, they have probably created FIVE chances to score and taken not a single one.

Surely they must bag one if this carries on?

  10. Can Dale lift themselves after York drama?published at 14:50 BST 3 May

    Rochdale v Scunthorpe (15:00 BST)

Sorry to break it to you, Dale fans, but since the play-off system and its second promotion spot were introduced to the National League at the end of the 2002-03 season, the team finishing second has been promoted only six times out of 23.

During that time, there have been a fair few horror stories involving high-flying runners-up who missed out on the title by small margins then losing in the play-offs to sides who finished way below them.

In 2003-04, Hereford finished second with 17 more points than third-placed Shrewsbury, who were promoted via the play-offs instead. Hereford then finished second and missed out in the play-offs again the following year, before finally being promoted from second place, at the third time of asking, in 2005-06.

Now in the Championship, only missing out on a play-off place on a dramatic final day yesterday, Wrexham endured a torrid time after finishing second on 98 points in 2011-12. They were immediately knocked out of the play-off semi-finals, and were mired in mid-table mediocrity in the National League for more than a decade before finally being promoted as champions in 2022-23.

York finally got themselves over the line last weekend but they were also terrific last season, earning 96 points but finishing five behind Barnet, before being knocked out of the play-offs in the semi-finals by Oldham, who had finished 26 points behind them in fifth.

Dale finished 24 points clear of fifth-placed Scunthorpe this season, but could lightning strike again?

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:49 BST 3 May

Carlisle 1-1 Boreham Wood - extra time being played

No goals, but a red card in the opening 15 minutes of extra-time.

Junior Luamba's lunge on Zak Brunt earned him a straight red card and his side have been chasing shadows ever since.

Can Wood capitalise in the next 15 minutes or are we destined for penalties?

  12. 'Boreham Wood playing through Carlisle so easily'published at 14:48 BST 3 May

    Carlisle 1-1 Boreham Wood

    James Phillips
    BBC Radio Cumbria Sport commentator

Boreham Wood's finishing has been abysmal.

They have had four or five chances since the red card and have not been able to take any.

They are playing through Carlisle so easily at the minute.

United are all over the shop at the back and desperately need half-time for a reset.

  16. 'A massive chance and a massive miss'published at 14:45 BST 3 May

    Carlisle 1-1 Boreham Wood

    James Phillips

What a massive chance and a massive miss that was from Matt Rush.

How on earth has he been allowed so much space there for the visitors.

  17. CLOSE!published at 104 mins

Carlisle 1-1 Boreham Wood - extra time being played

How? He's scored 33 times this season but that should really be 34.

Chris Bush threads a pass into the feet of Matt Rush who takes a touch on the edge of the box and when whips a left-footed effort across goal and a yard wide of the post.

He had time to take a touch, or two even.

Is that THE chance of avoiding penalties spurned?

  18. Can Dale respond to psychological blow?published at 14:44 BST 3 May

    Rochdale v Scunthorpe (15:00 BST)

Rochdale finished 24 points clear of Scunthorpe over the course of the season, but given the manner of last weekend's dramatic second-placed finish, moments after believing they had snatched the title from York, will Dale suffer a hangover today?

One person who knows a bit about it is former Notts County keeper Sam Slocombe, who helped the Magpies to 107 points in 2022-23, only for Wrexham to take the title and leave County to negotiate the play-offs, eventually pipping Chesterfield on penalties in the play-off final.

"The psychological side of bringing yourself back up to compete in massive games after not quite reaching your goal is very challenging," Slocombe told BBC Sport.

"You have to verbalise it and say to each other 'we wanted to get promoted and we're still in an unbelievable position to do that'. That burning desire needs to stay there.

"National League play-offs are one-legged, pure tournament football - what you did week in, week out doesn't matter any more.

"If you finish second, you also have a gap where the teams lower down play the first play-off match. I found that very challenging because they get to keep their intensity while you're waiting around - maybe your level is dropping.

"The lower play-off teams will go there with zero pressure - it's a freebie for them."

    Carlisle 1-1 Boreham Wood

    Adam Lanigan
BBC Sport reporter at Brunton Park

The fans around me at Brunton Park have gone very quiet since the sending off of Junior Luamba.

It feels like they are fearing the worst and no surprise, given that Boreham Wood have already gone close three times with a man extra.

Carlisle will do well to get it to penalties at this rate.

  20. Postpublished at 103 mins

Carlisle 1-1 Boreham Wood - extra time being played

Zak Brunt has really grown into this game, just as Regan Linney has faded for the hosts.

Brunt collects a pass on the edge of the box and drives into the area before shuffling to make room for an angled shot which Gabe Breeze gets down to block at his near post.
