There are two ways of looking at Southampton.

One is as an established Premier League club that just happened to find itself in the Championship for a season and now they are back where they belong.

If that is the prevailing feeling at St Mary's, manager Russell Martin is in a whole heap of trouble.

The other is Southampton are a newly promoted club trying to re-establish themselves in the top flight, knowing there will be some teething troubles along the way.

That attitude would give Martin some breathing space.

I am not sure I agree with this game being a free hit for Southampton because teams at the foot of leagues do beat teams at the top. But no-one expects anything, which should take some pressure off.

His answer was essentially ‘yes’, as he said they never expected to find themselves in this position. But there’s a real determination and belief that they can finally get three points here at the Amex.

The run of fixtures has been really tough and among the toughest for any team. If they had started the season with that formation they were used to, they may have picked up some more points and been in a different position.

It is not a bad sign that Man City are winning and have won ugly the last couple of games. Fulham ran them really close at Etihad Stadium and then they get over the line with an emphatic late header from John Stones at Wolves last week.

That pretty much sums them up at the moment, and they will go on a run where they really hit top form eventually. That is what they do.

A blow for Brighton before kick-off, Lewis Dunk was set to make his 250th Premier League appearance for the Seagulls but injured his calf in the warm up. Igor Julio replaces him.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth defender Illian Zabarnyi speaking to Premier League Productions: "Aston Villa are doing great and top in the Champions League and in the Premier League. I am excited to get out on the pitch and try with the best.

"[The win against Arsenal] It was a really good game and I am really happy. We try today our best as well.

"We know it and you just need 100 per cent focus and give your best. I think we have a chance and it is going to be an interesting game."

Bournemouth have not changed their style.

Iraola is very proactive in his changes and they have the desired impact.

I like his style. They have a decent budget and they do OK but he is an outstanding manager for the club.

If I'm an adversary I am more worried about Man City finding ways to come back into games. They have plenty of injuries at the moment but we've seen this film before, they always find a way.

It is remarkable the amount of points they have picked up from losing positions already this season.

That is the sign of real champions.
