In-form Southampton romped to an emphatic 5-0 win over QPR at St Mary's to make it seven games unbeaten in the Championship (W5 D2).

Saints boss Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:

"There were many games we could have scored more than one, in home games especially, sometimes that’s enough, but today there were some key moments that fell in our direction and we have some good quality players on the pitch.

"These night games are always special. St Mary’s is always special and evenings for me even more because you know you have a quick pitch so we need to be sharp in possession and clear in the way we play.

"It was key for me that we were sharp from the beginning and the first goal was a consequence of that.

"We are still not where we want to be, we have to keep our head down, be humble, keep working and stay on the gas."

  4. It's a good point - Dykespublished at 22:40 GMT 24 February

Charlton remain seven points clear of the relegation zone thanks to their draw at West Brom,

Lyndon Dykes grabbed a second-half equaliser and told BBC Radio London:

“In the end, a good point. I think the game itself was a bit scrappy, especially first half. We didn't show our full capability, but at the end of the day, we take the point.

"It was a better performance second-half and we threatened a bit more and looked a bit more like ourselves, so we have to take the point and then we move on.

    On his goal:

“It was a great ball from Kano [Kayne Ramsay], great movement. I just wanted to hit it low and was really happy to see it hit the back of the net because we needed it as a team.

"I think it lifted us a little bit and obviously for myself. I'm really enjoying it here and I'm feeling good, especially in front of goal.”

It's now eight league games without a win for West Brom under new boss Eric Ramsay.

They were pegged back by Charlton after George Campbell had given the Baggies the lead.

Ramsay has told BBC Radio WM:

"It's a game we should have won - out of three of the four games we've drawn in the league recently that's the one we've created good chances in open play and should turn into more than a goal we've got off the set play.

"Ultimately we put ourselves in a position where when the moment came that we did lack real decisiveness from a defensive perspective, we came unstuck and we find ourselves where we are.

"It's symptomatic of where we are - we're where we are for a reason. I'm genuinely pleased with the level of competitiveness - we're not able to translate performances that equate to one point into three points.

"The question around my job and the future is never one I can ever answer or attempt to answer. I can only do what I can do over the course of a day and put my head on the pillow at night feeling I've turned over every stone.

"I'm not saying I'm blameless - I can only feel I've controlled what I can control and today is a showing of that I suppose."

  6. The reaction was great - Struberpublished at 22:34 GMT 24 February

    FT: Blackburn 1-2 Bristol City

    Bristol City

Bristol City kept pace with the play-off places after coming from behind to beat Blackburn 2-1 at Ewood Park.

Robins boss Gerhard Struber told BBC Radio Bristol:

"It was not easy, especially after how they jump in the game, after five or six minutes they have the lead.

"But the reaction was great from the boys and how we played football in the first half.

"How we drive them down, we could have had a goal more. But we showed again how good we can be.

"Second half they were much more aggressive against us and left us no space to create something. It was difficult for us.

"And then we defend our own goal. It was not always easy to watch. But you have to deal [with it] here.

"This is a different vibe now, a different energy from Blackburn. It's not the Blackburn from three weeks ago."

Middlesbrough missed the chance to move level on points with Championship leaders Coventry after they were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-battling Leicester.

Boro boss Kim Hellberg told BBC Radio Tees:

"I thought it was two good teams going at each other. They had a lot of quality. There are some top players in that team and we are the same.

"I think it's a game where of course we're disappointed. I think we were very good at the start of the game then we are disappointed with conceding that goal and that breaks a lot of the momentum.

"They get a lot of energy. You have to defend that free-kick better and then it's strong coming back from 1-0 down to get a draw.

"That makes it one loss in the last nine but we want to win games."

  8. The game got away from us - Stillpublished at 22:30 GMT 24 February

Watford suffered a third league defeat in six outings to seriously damage their play-off hopes.

Tom Ince also had a late penalty saved by Christian Walton.

Head coach Ed Still has been speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I was very disappointed with how we weren't aggressive in the first half, we didn't execute the pressing triggers that we wanted and were much more passive than we wanted to be.

"Despite that, we haven't conceded any big chances in the first half apart from the free-kick - and I don't know in what world that is a foul against Mattie Pollock and it was disappointing to concede off a rebound.

"The second half, we came out much better, we put them under pressure and made it difficult for them and had a really good spell for 20-25 minutes.

"We should have been a bit more clinical in the final third to be able to create a chance or two more than we did and then we were unlucky on the break for the second goal.

"It feels like the game has got away from us on a couple of unlucky bounces."

Ipswich are back up to third place in the Championship with their 2-0 win at Watford.

Watford's Tom Ince also saw a late penalty saved by Christian Walton.

Head coach Kieran McKenna has been speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk:

"We've had a lot of travelling so it was important to get the performance first and foremost - we were disappointed after Saturday [lost 5-3 at Wrexham] so we had to come out and show the right ingredients with the performance and we did that.

"Our intensity in the duels was really good, it's so important in the away games and if you don't manage to do that in this division then the momentum of the game is always going to be against you.

"It allowed us to impose ourselves on the ball - we created lots of pressure and deserved to lead at half time.

"We deserved a clean sheet, it's a poor mistake for the penalty but it's great when you learn from the mistake and it doesn't cost you and great for Christian [Walton] to save a penalty that gets the clean sheet."

Portsmouth put in a much improved second-half performance after trailing Wrexham 2-0 at the break but after pulling one back after 49 minutes they were unable to find an equaliser.

Pompey boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"The old cliché, it was a game of two halves. I think we completely dominated the second half. I was really disappointed with the first goal, the second was a set-piece that stems from a foul but the less we say about that the better.

"I thought it was really poor officiating all night and it was just a shame that we gave ourselves so much of a mountain to climb because we were superb in the second half.

"Coming off the back of the third away game on the spin, coming here against a side that has just run riot at home, I thought we were much the better side.

"It was one of those nights if had been 1-0 at half-time the outcome is probably different. We finished strongly, we looked really fit, we need to show a little bit more belief on the ball.

"A lot of improvement, I thought we made them look very ordinary in the second half."

Leicester battled for a hard-earned point in their 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough. Foxes boss Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Leicester:

"It was an end-to-end game and I think again, on the back of the Stoke effort, for a lot of players to have to go again with that type of energy, it was a real test.

"It's a real test here, they open you up, they pull you around, they're very good in possession.

"I thought defensively we were really good for the most part. We switched off probably two or three times. I think one first half, one for the goal and that was a disappointment.

"Maybe we just ran out of a little bit of energy at about 70 minutes. But then we finished the game probably the stronger team."

On the character of the team: "I can only judge them on what I see and what I see is a group of players that are desperate to improve the situation they are in, that are desperate to do better in the league."

Middlesbrough captain Hayden Hackney speaking to BBC Radio Tees after the 1-1 draw with Leicester:

"That's the word, frustration. Maybe a little bit sharper, maybe something falling for us inside the box, getting that half a yard to finish, but we will look at that and try and work on it.

"Perfect timing I thought with the goal. We came back out in the second half to try and take over control of the game, which I thought we did.

"It's just being a little bit sharper in those moments and almost forcing it in.

"But we will look back at that and try and improve."

As a QPR fan, I’m growing very bored of always being on the wrong side of these embarrassing cricket scores. Conceded more than 50 goals, absolute joke. Show some pride. Julien Stephan's comments pre and post games are comical, and repetitive, get him out.

Oh what has happened to QPR tonight, absolutely battered. Let's hope we now go on a good run like we did when Coventry kicked us all over the park (7-1). COYRS

Middlesbrough missed the chance to move level on points with Coventry at the top, allowing Ipswich and Hull to close the gap to Boro to six points.

The Tractor Boys have two games in hand on Boro, while the Tigers also have a game to spare.

Wrexham's play-off quest keeps rolling on and Southampton are now up to seventh as their good form continues in emphatic fashion.

Bristol City also stay on the heels of the top six with their victory at Blackburn, who are now four points above Leicester in 22nd.

West Brom remain 21st and one point ahead of the Foxes after their draw with Charlton, so it's as you between those two.

    Adam Blackmore

The referee puts QPR out of their misery and says enough is enough.

Saints move up to within a place of the play-offs, it's five alive for Southampton at home.

First game in seven league matches that they've scored more than one at home.

That was about as routine for Saints as it gets and about as routine as they needed it to be.

Southampton's biggest win of the season is complete!

A very one-sided affair and Saints have won at a canter in the end.

They are in great form and appear to be timing their run to the play-offs nicely - long way still to go of course.

QPR just need to get this result out of their system and move on quickly.

Their players are in discussions with their travelling fans who are not particularly pleased with what they saw tonight.
