Walsall fought out a goalless draw with Grimsby to maintain a perfect defensive record after three games of the new season.

Two well-matched sides traded half-chances in a physical encounter, first through Walsall's Courtney Clarke when he hammered high and wide from Aaron Pressley's lay-off after 16 minutes.

Grimsby's Charles Vernam then blazed over after good work from Andy Cook following Harvey Rodgers' low cross.

The Saddlers ramped up the tempo early in the second half with Clarke hitting into the chest of visiting goalkeeper Christy Pym.

The visitors posed a greater threat as the half wore on as Justin Amaluzor was shoved over en route to goal just outside the box by James Connolly, who was booked.

And Jayden Sweeney's thump on the run from the left edge of the box was beaten over by Walsall goalkeeper Jed Ward 13 minutes from the end.
