Eddie Howe has done a fantastic job up there. I like how he’s changing that forward line-up.

I think they have struggled with that change from Alexander Isak, who was a complete forward and Nick Woltemade isn’t that.

Aston Villa will be kicking themselves in the Premier League with a couple of home defeats, which you expect them to win.

And with Newcastle, hearing about the pressure on Eddie Howe, which is ridiculous when you think about the job he has done.

They’re not flying in the Premier League, but over the course and distance of what he has achieved he has done wonders for Newcastle.

Fans need to have a bit more patience with Howe.

Eddie Howe was fielding questions about his position as Newcastle boss at his news conference on Monday.

By Friday, he was talking up the possibility of a "great" future for his side after the win at Tottenham.

"That's what winning does. It's such an amazing thing. It can change the perspective of everyone,” said Howe.

“It was a big win for us but now we have got to try and back it up – and we're searching for that consistency.”

He added: "The biggest thing is to find a clear identify and a clear way of playing, and then we can see what the future looks like with this team. If it's positive, then that could be a great thing."

Could this be Aston Villa's year?

Unai Emery has made it clear that the Premier League is his priority.

But the Aston Villa manager has hailed the FA Cup as the "most beautiful cup in the world” as his side look to stay in contention to win a trophy for the first time since 1996.

“We have in mind how important the FA Cup is for our fans," he writes in his programme notes before the fourth-round tie against Newcastle United.

There may only be a place in the last 16 at stake this evening, but one day returning to Wembley is also huge source of inspiration for Newcastle, of course.

Eddie Howe’s side ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by winning the EFL Cup last season.

Forward Anthony Elanga, who joined the club from Nottingham Forest last summer, watched on from afar as 150,000 supporters lined the streets of Newcastle for the victory parade.

That has given the Swede “motivation to give them more”.

“Villa are a top side, but we believe in ourselves,” he said. “Here at the club, the ambition is to go far - not just to participate - and it’s a fantastic opportunity to go there and really put a marker down.”

Very little of note happened in that first half of extra-time.

This feels like a match destined for penalties.

Newcastle arrive at Villa Park buoyed after victory over Tottenham in the Premier League on Tuesday ended their five-match winless streak in all competitions - a run which began with a 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa in late January.

Unai Emery’s Villa, meanwhile, earned their first league win since that victory at St James’ Park on Wednesday, clinching a 1-0 win over Brighton to remain within seven points of leaders Arsenal.

Both clubs had to overcome Premier League opposition to reach the FA Cup fourth round, with Villa winning 2-1 at Tottenham and Newcastle beating Bournemouth on penalties five weeks ago.

Manchester City cruised to victory in the end, but there was a little bit of trepidation in the game.

Manchester City

Man City goalkeeper James Trafford, speaking to BBC: "We had to work really hard. They did really well. Defended really well and they had belief that grew through the game. We got there in the end and got the good win.

"It's one of them, it's a knockout competition. We won and we have a week until the next game. We have to keep going.

"I knew I wasn't going to have too much to do but, when I was called upon, I had to do well.

On getting games in the cup: "It was nice, it wasn't what I expected coming into the season. I tried to guard against it. It's the reality and I have to give it my best shot. It's the situation I'm in. We train every day but making saves, it's good fun."

Salford City

Salford defender Luke Garbett, speaking to BBC: "We've got a huge sense of pride in the performance. To a man, we were excellent. We created some really good chances in the second half. I was disappointed that my free-kick hit the wall. We had Woodburn in the first half, where Trafford made a good save.

"We've been working all week on the shape and I thought we did that to a man today. We started to believe that it's a real cup tie. ON another day we would've got a goal. to come away with 2-0 when it was 8-0 last year shows the club is on the rise.

"I think it's a totally different feel. It was demoralising. Our confidence dipped.

"Anything is possible. They are a world-class team and they are going to create chances and score good goals but we kept that to a minimum today. We are a match for anyone. We have to focus on recovering right now and it's a massive game on Tuesday against Newport."

Time to begin turning our attention to matters at Villa Park, where seven-time winners Aston Villa will soon take on six-time winners Newcastle United for a place in the FA Cup fifth round.

In five of the previous six seasons that Aston Villa and Newcastle have met in the FA Cup, Villa (in 1895, 1897, 1905 and 1924) or Newcastle (in 1905, 1924 and 1952) have reached the final that year.

OK, so in two of those seasons (1905 and 1924) they actually did meet in the final... But still, it's a stat worthy of teeing up a huge FA Cup tie between two clubs who could conceivably go on to lift the trophy in May.

I was impressed with Mansfield.

When they went behind, they kept their composure and kept in the game. It was a very special goal from Louis Reed.

Mansfield captain Louis Reed, speaking to Final Score: "As soon as it left my boot I felt it going in. I have been working on them throughout the week. The lads said, 'This is your moment, go and take it'. Thankfully, I did.

"It shows what a group we have got. The draws we keep getting are big ones. I felt we were always in the game even when we were 1-0 down at half-time.

"I think a cliché, whoever we get in the next round, we will go into that with the same energy as this one."

Mansfield Town have eliminated a top-flight side from the FA Cup for the first time since February 1969.

They had lost nine successive matches in this competition against clubs in the top tier since defeating West Ham 3-0.
