  1. 'Newcastle is a strong challenge'published at 13:24 GMT 25 January

Newcastle v Aston Villa (14:00 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery wants his side to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Everton.

Villa missed out on the chance to go second when they were beaten 1-0 by David Moyes’ side but can get their campaign back on track with a visit to Newcastle.

Emery’s men have conceded 12 goals in the last three visits to St James’ Park and the Spaniard knows it will be a tough encounter.

“Newcastle is a challenge, and a strong challenge. They started the season being contenders to be in the top positions for Europe and the Champions League,” Emery said.

“They are performing fantastic, in the Champions League they are doing fantastic, and at home they are feeling confident and strong. How we are facing them, looking at the advantage we have in the table with the points, gives us confidence.

“They started as a contender to be in the top five – we didn’t start as a contender to be in the top five. Now we are. We are a team to try to beat.

“We are third and we lost an opportunity to be second last week, but we are challenging one team like Newcastle. We want to try and get our position in the table.

“Newcastle is always very difficult in their home. Historically in the last few years, it was horrible for us – really bad results. Each match, each season, each moment is an opportunity. I am looking forward to watching how we are facing them.”

  2. 'I really enjoy watching Unai's teams'published at 13:23 GMT 25 January

Newcastle v Aston Villa (14:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Aston Villa: "It was a really competitive game earlier on in the season.

"They've had a great season so far. Unai is an outstanding coach, I really enjoy watching his teams, They have clear structures within their style of play.

"They've found ways of winning tight games this season, and have gone on a very good run, which is very difficult to do in the Premier League.

"Full credit to him and his player, and they've had European success as well, so that brings its own challenges as we've found this season, so we know this will be a really difficult game."

  3. No major changes planned to Chelsea's stylepublished at 13:22 GMT 25 January

Crystal Palace v Chelsea (14:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior feels it would be "crazy" to come in mid-season and change everything.

The Blues are sixth in the Premier League after Rosenior replaced the sacked Enzo Maresca earlier this month.

"I'm flexible, but at the moment it's about what's best for the group and what they're used to because there is literally no training time," said Rosenior.

"We are playing, recovering and playing again. And it will be like that for the next two or three months."

  4. Oliver Glasner strikes a calmer tone in his programme notespublished at 13:21 GMT 25 January

Crystal Palace v Chelsea (14:00 GMT)

    BBC Sport Chelsea reporter

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has not hidden his discontent at decisions to sell star players like Marc Guehi in recent times and has said he is leaving at the end of the season.

However, his programme notes don't dwell on recent comments about weaknesses in Palace's squad.

He talks positively about now-Man City defender Guehi, how they want to bounce back from recent results and how well returning Ismaila Sarr did at winning the Africa Cup of Nations this month.

  5. 'I will have failed if I can’t revive Palace’s season' - Glasnerpublished at 13:20 GMT 25 January

Crystal Palace v Chelsea (14:00 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Oliver Glasner feels he will have “failed” Crystal Palace if he cannot reverse their fortunes before his departure at the end of the season.

The Austrian, who led the Eagles to a historic FA Cup victory last term, will leave the club when his deal expires at the end of the campaign, a decision the 51-year-old shared with chairman Steve Parish in October but did not disclose to his players or the public until last week.

Palace were third after their first six Premier League games, but that late-September high now feels like a distant memory for a side who have dropped down the standings and will be looking to snap a 10-game winless streak in all competitions when they host Chelsea.

“I think we have, hopefully, the worst period of our season behind us, before I announced it,” said Glasner.

“If you can’t get the turnaround, I would feel I have failed to be honest. The first message when I arrived here, you were laughing, was, ‘I am not David Copperfield’.

“I told the players, ‘Don’t do anything for me. You don’t need to do it for me. Do it for yourself, do it for your team-mates and do it for your fans and the club’. That’s important.”

  6. 'This is the challenge with the schedule'published at 13:18 GMT 25 January

Brentford v Nottingham Forest (14:00 GMT)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are just two points above the drop zone after West Ham beat Sunderland on Saturday.

Forest boss Sean Dyche said of the trip to Brentford: “Their home form has been good in general, Keith [Andrews] has taken them in his own style and he is doing a good job. It’s certainly a tough game, but every game in the Premier League is, I don’t throw that around lightly."

Forest's game comes only three days after they lost 1-0 to Braga in Portugal in the Europa League, while Brentford have not played since 17 January.

"This is the challenge with the schedule, managing all the players, trying to win games, trying to educate them, to get them playing and trying to win," added Dyche.

“This is the challenge, I knew it when I got here, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”

  7. Andrews warns players to not drop standardspublished at 13:16 GMT 25 January

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has warned his players not to allow their standards to drop over the second half of the season – or risk a promising campaign becoming “unstuck”.

The Bees remain in the hunt for European qualification, a point off the top six after they lost at Chelsea last weekend.

Despite the positivity of climbing the table on the back of a six-game unbeaten league run before defeat at Stamford Bridge, and having also booked a spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup, Andrews knows the outlook can turn swiftly if anyone takes their eye off the job at hand.

“The league is that competitive, the intensity levels are that high, if you are not quite on it, for whatever reason, you can quickly become unstuck,” Andrews said at a news conference.

“You don’t just turn it on and off – you have got to earn the right to play. If your performances in the main are at a level, they will bring results – it is a very demanding league.”

Forest continue to scrap for points at the other end of the table, but will head to the Gtech Community Stadium on the back of a 1-0 defeat away to Braga in the Europa League on Thursday, which all but ended hopes of direct qualification to the last 16.

Andrews, though, feels Forest – now on their third manager of the season with Sean Dyche – have plenty of strength in depth to “hurt” any side.

“You only have to look at the team sheet,” the Brentford boss said. “They have top level players who can really hurt you and a manager who knows his way around the division, so it will be a very competitive game.”

There is a familiar look to the top of the table at first glance.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea currently occupy five of the top six spots.

But the status quo have been disrupted in recent years.

Just as Aston Villa qualified for the Champions League, in 2024, so, too, did Newcastle United in 2025 and 2023

    Could they do so again?

Third-placed Aston Villa look well on course to do so and though there is still a lot of football to be played, this feels like a pivotal afternoon for Newcastle.

As inconsistent as they have been, on the road at least, Eddie Howe’s side could even move up to fourth if results elsewhere go their way this afternoon.

"It's a good opportunity for us to lay down a marker," returning defender Dan Burn writes in his programme notes.

It’s all set up to be a cracker.
