A breath-taking performance from Gian van Veen.

Credit to Alan Soutar, he battled and gave it everything - a typical Soutar performance.

It was all about Van Veen.

    Result: Van Veen 3-1 Soutar

    Dan Dawson

Van Veen underlines his title credentials. He's a two-time World Youth champion, the reigning European champion and he might just be convincing a few people that he could be the senior world champion at the start of next year.

Next up, 15th-seed Nathan Aspinall takes on American entertainer Leonard Gates. That should be a fun one.

Then we have the headline act of the night - second seed Luke Humphries against one of the stories of the tournament, 71-year-old Paul Lim. Don't miss that one.

Single 16 and tops, and Gian van Veen has stormed into the next stage.

He averaged 108.28 in that match, and only had three trebleless visits.

Van Veen will be back after Christmas, and he looks a genuine bet to go deep in this competition.

    Van Veen 2-1 Soutar (2-0)

While Alan Soutar has kept a good level, Gian van Veen has gone stratospheric. He begins the latest set with his seventh 180 if the match.

Another 100-plus visit leaves him in 56 to win the match...

    Van Veen 2-1 Soutar (2-0)

Gian van Veen is now averaging 107 in this match. At a tournament where so many seeds have flopped, he is living up to the hype.

He has three at D18 to hold with Soutar nowhere, and takes it with his second dart to move one leg away from round three.

    Mark Webster

Everything is going right for Van Veen now. He's got this match in the palm of his hand, he's broken throw in a set that if he wins, he'll be back after Christmas.

When you're already one of the best double-hitters in the sport, when you score like Gian does, it's no wonder that he's moving up and up the world rankings.

He's going to win so much if he carries on playing like this.

Even Alan Soutar had to nod approvingly at that one. Stellar darts from a really exciting young player.

Van Veen follows it up with his fifth 180 of the match. The Dutchman is motoring now.

Now a sixth maximum! And with Soutar missing a 140 finish, Van Veen can break here...

And he does so. We are in the endgame, you feel.

    Van Veen 2-1 Soutar (3-0)

Gian van Veen can seal this set by reeling in the Big Fish.

T20, T20... a glance to the excited crowd... BULLSEYE!

Now that is how you win a set!

    Van Veen 1-1 Soutar (2-0)

Amid the fall of so many seeds, Gian van Veen is the only top-32 player in this eighth of the draw. A route to the quarter-finals could really be opening up.

He's first to a finish against the throw, but misses at D16 leaving Soutar needing 124 - the finish he found in the opening leg.

But the Scot cannot repeat himself, and Van Veen breaks.

There's a man in the crowd who looks strikingly like Elton John in an Elvis costume. Surely not?

    Van Veen 1-1 Soutar (1-0)

Onto set three. A meeting with Latvia's Madars Razma is the prize for the victor in this match.

Van Veen - who has averaged north of 104 in both sets so far - throws first and is scoring strongly again, setting himself up with a finish of 52.

20, D16, simple. Van Veen is flowing now.

    Van Veen 1-1 Soutar (3-2)

That could be a pivotal moment. Alan Soutar had head in hands after missing double eight there.

Gian van Veen threw three 180s in set two, and now seems to be sorting himself out with his finishing too.

    Van Veen 1-1 Soutar (3-2)

This has been a very even, very high-quality match so far.

Soutar can go two sets up with a 71 checkout, but he lands the first arrow in single four. He needs to pull this out...

T17 - then drags an attempted D8 into the 16s!

And Gian van Veen steals it!

    Van Veen 0-1 Soutar (2-2)

Van Veen follows that checkout with a 180 and roars in delight. The young man is fully fired up now, and just needs to hold to draw this match level.

He has a chance at the Big Fish, 170 checkout, but can't make it. So Soutar needs 151...

Not there, Van Veen returns needing 112. He gets set up at D16 - missed!

So Soutar can break back with 60, he gets two at tops... and finds the second.

Break back, back on throw - and Soutar will go 2-0 up with a hold.

  18. Postpublished at 19:37 GMT 22 December 2025

    Van Veen 0-1 Soutar (2-1)

Whenever Soutar is landing his first dart in T20, the others tend to follow. He has a lovely flow so far.

Van Veen chucks 180 to keep Soutar on notice, and when the Scot can't finish the Dutchman needs 50...

And he finds it! An 11-dart leg, and a potentially big break for Van Veen.

    Van Veen 0-1 Soutar (1-1)

Gian van Veen is not playing badly here, but Alan Soutar has brought his A-game - although the Scot suffers his second bounce-out when on for a 180 so far in this match!

Van Veen checks out on 75 to keep this set on throw.

    Van Veen 0-1 Soutar (0-1)

Set two, Alan Soutar throws first.

Both men struggle to hit the trebles regularly, before Soutar strikes 140 to leave him with three at D10 to check out.

He only needs one. A very solid showing so far from the Scot.
