The Asp has the chance if he puts it all together to go deep and challenge the top players. He just needs to be consistent.

That could be a big moment in this match if Nathan can accelerate from here. He's been really throwing well.
Aspinall 2-0 Gates (3-1)
There's a rather sedate atmosphere in Ally Pally for now, with this game going largely to form.
The crowd are roused however by a 180 for Aspinall, which sets up an 84 checkout.
However the Englishman instead sets up three at D16, not believing Gates can check out 152.
Gates can't, but Aspinall misses three set darts!
It's a huge chance for Gates, but he misses twice at doubles before Aspinall finds D4.
Not perfect from the Asp, but he's still well on course for round three.
Aspinall 1-0 Gates (2-1)
Leonard Gates is throwing OK, although he hasn't hit a 180 yet and needs a few more trebles to really worry Nathan Aspinall.
However, a 140 sets up a 102 finish to hold throw - and he needs it as Aspinall will have three at tops.
Gates gets the set-up right but misses D16, allowing Aspinall to break and move closer to a 2-0 lead in sets.
Aspinall 1-0 Gates (1-1)
Is Nathan Aspinall ranked a little low as the 15th seed? At his best he can trouble any player in the world.
He doesn't quite see off a 161 checkout, but sets up three at D16 to hold throw - and just needs one.
Aspinall 1-0 Gates (0-1)
Image source, PA MediaCan Leonard Gates respond? A bounce-out in his first visit of the second set won't help.
And he misses a shot at tops to hold here, leaving Aspinall needing 106.
It doesn't happen though, and the Asp looks like he has poison in his mouth as Gates sees it off.

You want to smother your lesser-ranked opponents, make them feel there isn't a chance, take away their hope.
Aspinall 1-0 Gates (0-0)
Image source, PA MediaNot perfect from Nathan Aspinall so far - he's converted just three of 12 attempts at doubles so far. Certainly neither he nor Leonard Gates is at the level we saw of Gian van Veen earlier.
But Aspinall is giving nothing to Gates so far, and another upset seems unlikely at the moment.
Aspinall 1-0 Gates (3-1)
Aspinall will need to stay on top of his game to avoid leaving the gate open for, erm, Gates.
They are both averaging around 95, but Aspinall is scoring bigger when it matters.
Leonard Gates gets to a 156 finish, but Aspinall is hovering on 46.
And Gates can't find the monster checkout - allowing Aspinall to seal the set via D8.
Aspinall 0-0 Gates (2-1)
Now the crowd chant for Aspinall. So fickle.
The Asp seems to have settled now, and though he needs five darts at doubles he is able to hold throw with Gates well back.
Aspinall 0-0 Gates (1-1)
"USA, USA," is the chant from the crowd - Aspinall quiets that with the first 180 of the match, but he's already playing catch-up.
Gates looks set for a finish first, but a lousy visit of 43 leaves him needing 161.
He can't find it, so Aspinall can break back with a finish of 80 - which he makes.
All square.

The winner here faces Kevin Doets in round three. The Dutchman looked in good nick earlier today.
Nathan Aspinall throws first here, and gets the start he wanted with three at tops after 12.
But he goes under the wire, then misses D10! Big chance for Leonard Gates.
And the American buries D19 - a great start for Gates.
Aspinall 0-0 Gates (0-0)
Nathan Aspinall, runners up at the recent Players Championship and a semi-finalist in this year's Premier League, will start as clear favourite here.
But he wasn't brilliant against Laurence Ilagan in round one. Could Leonard Gates cause an upset?

I think it'll benefit Nathan Aspinall that he played Leonard here 12 months ago. It got a bit awkward at times and he had a tricky first-round game as well. It was 3-1 but Nathan had to work hard.
I like everything about Nathan at the moment, he's coming off the back of a Players Championship final, he's had to work hard and that hard work is paying off.

Time for the second match of the night.
Here comes Leonard Gates, the exuberant 'Soulger' dancing to the stage while wearing the colours of the Texas flag.
Gates was speaking earlier about how he tried to get into Nathan Aspinall's head by wearing a Chewbacca mask in the green room. Of course.

It was a proper David v Goliath match - David Davies was a rank outsider, so it has been a fantastic story.
Everyone thought it would be a routine win for Luke Littler, but David Davies started beautifully. His five set darts in set one, I don't think he could believe he was getting these opportunities.
Financially Davies is in a great position, and what a chance to play this phenomenon. Also it was a good benchmark to see where his game is, as he is thinking about going full time.

Luke Littler has started the defence of his world title with two straight-set wins and he'll back in third-round action after Christmas.
How did Littler become a teenage darts sensation and a world champion at the age of 17?

The draw has really opened up for Luke Littler. The one concern I had for him was Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals, he went out last night. He is the best player in our sport, I would not be surprised if he cruises into the semis - and that is when he comes into his own.
Luke Littler progressed to the third round but former champion Gerwyn Price suffered a shock exit at the PDC World Championship.
The 2021 victor Price had boldly predicted he would win a second title but was beaten 3-0 by Dutchman Wesley Plaisier.
Defending champion Littler, who was seeded to face Price in the quarter-finals, made the last 32 with a straight-set victory over David Davies.
Price's fellow Welshman Davies missed six darts at double to take the opening set.
Davies had taken time off from his full-time job as an NHS area manager to appear at Alexandra Palace and went to walk off stage at 2-2, mistakenly believing the first set was over.
Littler, 18, pushed on from there and will next meet Mensur Suljovic.
