The Dutchman, who has won the competition eight times, beat compatriot Gian van Veen 6-4 in the final.
Tonight, Van Gerwen begins with a match against Northern Irishman Josh Rock, who lost 6-2 to Jonny Clayton in the quarter-finals last week.
Rock, who won the World Cup of Darts with Northern Ireland team-mate Gurney in June 2025, is one of the four wildcards this year. He went out of the World Championships in the fourth round, losing to Justin Hood.
He also made the semi-finals of the World Matchplay, UK Open and World Matchplay last year.
