Image source, PA MediaLuke Humphries has clearly got a strategy to try something with his throw.
He was playing a little bit more measured and controlled.
It is fine when you're practising on the treble 20 and that repetition, but just at the back end of legs it wasn't as good as normal. It is still in transition.
It was strange to see that but it was a hug win.
Result: Humphries 6-3 Van Gerwen
Luke Humphries finishes with an average of 99.18, dragged down by another frustrating time on the doubles - he was just six of 18 for 33.33%.
Michael van Gerwen was well off it by his usual standards, averaging 91.02 with just one 180 to Humphries' three.
He was 50% on the doubles but an off night has opened the door for Humphries and Gian van Veen.

Luke Humphries strikes a real body blow.
He is still alive in the Premier League.

The Premier League champion is still in the mix for the play-offs.
Double six wraps things up against an out of sorts Michael van Gerwen.
Humphries won't care, he's closed the gap to MVG to just three points. Win the night and he'll be level with the Dutchman.

This has been a bitterly disappointing night for Michael van Gerwen and his legion of supporters.

This has been very good from Luke Humphries for someone who is trying something to just get better and feel more comfortable and confident.
It takes some guts to do. He's got some quality.
Humphries 5-3 Van Gerwen
That's the moment Luke Humphries was waiting for.
Finally, he converts a break opportunity after outscoring Michael van Gerwen all leg.
The Dutchman has escaped with big finishes before but wasn't even that close this time and so Humphries can take his time and gets double three to close in on victory.
Humphries 4-3 Van Gerwen
Very comfortable hold for Luke Humphries as Michael van Gerwen has a bit of a shocker.
Humphries can afford to make a bit of a mess of his set before eventually hitting double 16 to edge ahead again.
Humphries 3-3 Van Gerwen

I don't want to say that Luke Humphries has missed a lot of darts at doubles in the Premier League, but that is now 150 missed doubles.

Oh, that will hurt! It is spiteful darts from MVG!
There is a wry smile from Luke Humphries but he will be thinking every time he makes a mistake he gets punished.
Humphries 3-3 Van Gerwen
Ruthless from Michael van Gerwen.
Luke Humphries had just earned a big break opportunity but again misses tops for a 120 out.
MVG is left with 114 and makes it look so simple. All square again.

Image source, PA MediaThis is not about performances anymore for Luke Humphries, he just needs points. It is as simple as that.
Humphries 3-2 Van Gerwen
Luke Humphries' doubling is still well short of where he'd want it to but it's not costing him on throw so far.
After two misses at tops, he comes back to hit double 10 in a leg he led from start to finish.
Humphries 2-2 Van Gerwen
Luke Humphries would have been sniffing a break and even gives himself one at tops for a 125 out.
He can't get that but Michael van Gerwen swiftly takes out 122. Treble 18, treble 18, double seven.
Humphries 2-1 Van Gerwen
It's all very slow and deliberate from Luke Humphries.
It's painfully slow at times but he holds again, hitting double 16 at the first time of asking.
Humphries 1-1 Van Gerwen
Image source, PA MediaMichael van Gerwen levels it up after a fairly pedestrian leg.
It meandered along until MVG suddenly realised Luke Humphries wasn't too far behind after all.
He hits double seven and it's 1-1.
Humphries 1-0 Van Gerwen
Luke Humphries holds... just.
The defending champion misses two at double 16, only for Michael van Gerwen to miss three at the same number.
Two more at double go awry for Humphries but he eventually hits double eight.
